4. Remove one test strip from the bottle and recap the bottle. 5. Dip one end of the test strip (the end with the reagent areas) into the urine (Figure A). 6. Remove the strip and hold it horizontally. 7. Fifteen seconds later, compare the strip with the color chart on the bottle label (Figure B). Match it as closely as possible to one of the colors on the chart. Do not touch the wet strip to the bottle label.

TESTING URINE FOR ACETONE: KETOSTIX STRIP TEST

Note: If the results of the blood glucose tests are

above normal, the nurse may request that the urine be tested for acetone.

1. Carry out initial procedure actions. 2. Assemble equipment: Disposable gloves Ketostix reagent strips Sample of freshly voided urine in container 3. Put on disposable gloves.

8. Dispose of the strip and urine specimen unless orders have been given to save either or both of them. 9. Remove and properly dispose of gloves according to facility policy. 10. Carry out ending procedure actions.
