Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT)

The OLSAT is also a norm-referenced test that measures a student's abstract thinking and reasoning ability compared to students in the same grade level across the nation who took the test in 2002. · Multiple-choice items measure verbal, quantitative, and spatial reasoning abilities. · Timed Test · The name "school ability" reflects the test's intent: to measure the student's ability to cope with school learning tasks. "The tasks on OLSAT are related to school learning situations but are not actually taught." - Harcourt Assessment Dublin City Schools OLSAT Administration Grade 2 Grade 4 Grade 6 Gifted Identification: A Total School Ability Index (SAI) score of 126 or higher is recognized as gifted in the area of Superior Cognitive Ability by the Ohio Department of Education.

Anatomy of a Student OLSAT Report

· SAI (School Ability Index) o SAI of 100 = the mean, 50th percentile The average student (SAI range of 85-115) correctly answers approximately ½ of the questions o SAI Above 132 = approximately 2% of the population o SAI Below 68 = approximately 2% of the population o SAI of 150 is the maximum score o The test has 21 subtests organized into five areas with verbal and non-verbal items in each area. The five areas are: Verbal Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Pictorial Reasoning, Figural Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. o Verbal / Nonverbal Identifies whether knowledge of language is requisite to answering the items. That is, given that the directions are understood, a student could answer the nonverbal items without knowing English. Verbal items require knowledge of English. Age PR-S o Student's percentile rank / stanine compared to student's age o This may be helpful when interpreting scores for younger students in the grade level tested.
