21 st Annual Hunting & Outdoor Expo

Convention Preview

February 16-18, 2012 Marriott Hunt Valley Inn · Hunt Valley, MD

Welcome to our 2012 Convention Preview. In it you will find our schedule of events, descriptions of many of our exciting live auction items and other items which will be added to our full auction list. You will also see our silent auction list and, if you look at it closely, you will see some really unique items ... it is certainly not your average silent auction. If you look at our live auctions, we have some really exceptional items this year. We have the PA Conservation Elk tag. Who wouldn't want that tag in their pocket? We have a Tiburon Desert Bighorn Sheep tag, a Wyoming Bighorn Sheep tag, a Mexico Desert Bighorn Sheep tag, plus hunts for everything from Diving Ducks to Darted Rhinos. Even if you aren't bidding on one of the tags we have plenty of hunts that may interest you. Plus it is pretty exciting watching everything that goes on at the auction. Our seminars are also in place and, while some of the details are still being sorted out, we have a great lineup of some of the most knowledgeable people in the business. Kevin Hurley's "seminar" may be particularly interesting. Along with Dale Gaugler, Kevin will discuss the condition of Wild Sheep in the West, where our Grants in Aid money has gone in the past and where it can be best used in the future. For those that wonder if we are making a difference this may be the place to get your answer! We also have Bob Foulkrod who is always entertaining and has plenty of great stories to share. Dick and Sam Rohrer will enlighten us on what it takes to be prepared for bear hunting in Alaska. And Finally Bryan Martin will speak about preparing for a hunt plus what you should expect from an outfitter AND what the outfitter expects from you in order to make YOUR trip a success. Things are coming together nicely and it is due to dedicated volunteers that we are able to continue into our 21st year. As has been said over and over again ... without volunteers, exhibitors AND attendees this show would not be the success it has been throughout the years. There are days many of us wonder what our `real job' is and what is our `volunteer job'. We gladly do it and will continue to do it but we need YOUR support. We can plan the best possible convention and show but we need our members to attend. While you are making your plans for the show, why not bring a friend or relative along. This year we have stepped up our advertising, attended other events to increase awareness of who we are, and spent more time telling folks about our Chapter than ever before. We will also have a booth in Reno at the "Sheep Show" in hopes of promoting our Chapter to a larger audience. We've done all this on a volunteer basis because of our desire to "Put Sheep on the Mountain." We hope to see you in Hunt Valley February 16-18, 2012. Help us continue the successes of the past and to continue into the future. Sincerely, Your Board of Directors

Bob Foulkrod

Regarded by many as America's greatest living hunter, Bob Foulkrod has mastered all aspects of hunting from bows to firearms. He regards his mastery of sheep hunting as the pinnacle of his hunting career. During his half-century long stint as a hunter, he has spent over 10,000 days hunting and observing animals. It was not until 2000 that he took a serious interest in hunting wild sheep. Shortly thereafter he formulated his five-year-long Obsession Quest to take over 80 big game animals worldwide within 60 months. Since that time he has taken two North American Wild Sheep Grand Slams® plus a Marco Polo ram in Russia and numerous sheep and goats from New Zealand to Texas. Each of these hunts was accomplished before the unblinking eye of a video camera and then broadcast on television shows such as Winchester Legends or Bass Pro Shops World of Hunting. Perhaps even more astonishing is that while becoming a dedicated sheep hunter, Bob still hunts other big game around the world. He is in the field over 250 days a year. Bob and his wife, Sheila, reside in their lodge atop Armenia Mountain in north central Pennsylvania.

Grand Slam®, Ovis World Slam®, Capra World Slam® are trademarks of GSCO and are used with permission.

Dick and Sam Rohrer

Master Guide, Dick Rohrer, has been guiding on Kodiak Island since 1969. He is the owner and operator of Rohrer Bear Camp. Dick was born and raised in a small farming community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He first came to Alaska in 1964, and found it natural to get into the guiding industry. Along with being a fulltime guide, he serves as the Southwest Regional Advisor to the APHA (Alaska Professional Hunter Association) and holds the Guide/Outfitter seat on the Big Game Commercial Services Board (State of Alaska Regulatory Board). Dick is married to Sue Rohrer and they live in Kodiak. They have four children. Registered Guide, Sam Rohrer, has been guiding hunters on Kodiak since 1998 and fishermen and wildlife viewers since 1995. He is the owner and operator of Sam's Alaskan Adventures. Sam was born and raised in Kodiak; he grew up spending many days in the field at his fathers hunting camp. Along with being a full-time guide, Sam holds one of the sport/commercial seats on the KARAC (Kodiak and Aleutians Regional Advisory Council to the Federal Subsistence board). He is also a volunteer Search and Rescue dog handler for KISAR (Kodiak Island Search and Rescue). Sam is married to Sarah. They live in Kodiak and have three children: Anna, Bailey and Reily. Both Dick and Sam are Life Members of the Wild Sheep Foundation and have been Life Members of the Eastern Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation since the very beginning. They have attended every Eastern Chapter convention and have made a donation for each of those years.

Bryan Martin

Outfitter/Guide of Asian Mountain Outfitters Outfitter/guide, international hunter and author, Bryan Martin, has been outfitting and guiding hunters in British Columbia since 1999 through his company, Canadian Mountain Outfitters. Since 2002, he has arranged and guided many hunters in Central Asia through his Asian Mountain Outfitters business. An avid hunter himself, he has a real passion for hardcore backpack hunting and is always looking over the next ridge for that "animal-of-a-lifetime." Between guiding clients and doing his own hunts, Bryan partakes in 7-9 multi-day backpack hunts each year. In 1991, Bryan got his start in the hunting industry as a wrangler/packer while attending Oregon State University, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Construction Engineering Management and a Business Minor in 1995. Upon Graduating, he guided many Governor/Auction tag permit holders through well known outfitters, for Rocky Mountain, California and Desert Sheep in five different Western States. Bryan was raised on a farm/ranch in Central Oregon and moved to Montana in 1996. He now resides in British Columbia and is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada. During the 4-5 years he lived in Montana, he worked as a real estate salesperson/consultant, specializing in hunting properties and working ranches. Bryan is a hands-on, working guide/owner who has become well known for hunting hard and providing "real hunting adventures" for his many outfitted clients. Many hunters and industry professionals enjoy reading his informative, "Extreme Gear" articles, in The Huntin' Fool magazine. People who know him well often refer to Bryan as the "Gear Guru" or the "Gear Guy" because he has tested and used so many different types of gear and equipment and is always searching for better, stronger and more efficient products. He is passionate about sharing his hunting and equipment knowledge, which has worked for him on the many extreme hunts he has partaken in, both as a solo hunter and with clients/friends. He has backpack hunted from sea level to 16,300' and from -40° to 105° F. In extreme conditions, choosing the right equipment and knowing how to use it is very critical.

Permit Application Service FN

This donation covers 50% of the application service for as many permits and species that are available, as the lucky high bidder would like to apply for. The typical application fee runs approximately $50 per permit. This donation comes from the Cabela's T.A.G.S. program and is for permit application service for three years. One of the great benefits of the T.A.G.S. program is that they float any related tag fees for their clients. If you apply for sheep in the western states, the tag fees can really add up. The only additional cost to the purchaser is if the state requires the applicant to purchase a license or if there is a bonus point fee. The donation also includes expert advice on all the western states as well as specific animal and unit information. The value of this donation is really up to the purchaser! Four-Person Hunt for Whitewing and Mourning Doves in Old Mexico

FN

Dr .George Vogt, FNAWS Life Member #29 and Triple Grand Slammer from The Laredo Hunting Company, has come through again with a super combo hunt in Old Mexico. This is a four-person hunt for Whitewing and Mourning Doves. The donation is for three days and two nights with four sessions of hunting. Most hunting parties see hundreds of doves daily. The hunts vary each season, but they have a long reputation for having great bird numbers. You will hunt on over 10,000 accumulated acres. The Lodge is an antique Mexican Hacienda on a working cattle ranch with home cooked meals, air conditioning, and pool. Located on the Rio Grande River, it is only 5 minutes from the USA Bridge at Laredo, Texas. The International Airport is just 20 minutes away. With liberal Mexican bird limits, it is very close to the USA. Savor the flavor of Old Mexico. This donation is for first time hunters with the Laredo Hunt Club. You may upgrade this hunt to Trophy Whitetail Deer or Wild Boar and Javelina. Expect to have a sore shoulder after "hot barreled" shooting. You may bring additional guests to take the whole Lodge for 14 or more hunters. All transportation from Laredo Int. Airport in Laredo, Texas and back is included. The club has Benelli shotguns to rent. All is included: meals, lodging, guides, etc. Not included are the ammunition and licenses, alcoholic beverages, and tips. Please check out the website for more information. SATURDAY NIGHT AUCTION

2012 Pennsylvania Governor's Elk Permit SN

Our Eastern Chapter is proud to present the 2012 Pennsylvania "Governor's" Elk permit. This is a unique privilege and the purchaser should certainly have the hunt of a lifetime. Pennsylvania is fortunate to have Bull Elk with antler quality that will rival any state in the nation. Some tremendous bulls have been taken since the start of our modern day elk hunting a few years ago. The purchaser of the permit can use the weapon of their choosing from bow, crossbow, rifle, muzzleloader or handgun. In addition, instead of the normal one week season in mid-November, the purchaser has an extended season starting around September 1 continuing through the normal mid-November season. Ten weeks available to hunt, including the rut. Our Eastern Chapter was instrumental in the development and finally the fruition of this tag being available. It took a lot of years of hard work between the Eastern Chapter, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Lehigh Valley Chapter of SCI and many hours burning the midnight oil to make this permit a reality. Let's show the state of Pennsylvania what our Eastern Chapter is made of by bidding this permit to a new record high. The money from the sale of this permit will go directly back to the existing Elk program in the state. Tiburon Island Desert Bighorn Sheep Permit and Hunt for 2012-2013

SN

The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) and the Seri Community have again entered into an agreement for WSF to be the principle selling agent for the harvest of desert bighorn sheep on Tiburon Island. WSF will offer five (5) Tiburon tags for the November 19, 2012 March 31, 2013 season. Three (3) will be sold during our 2012 Reno convention, and two (2) will be sold though our chapter network. This is a 15-day fully outfitted hunt for one hunter and one non-hunting companion. Additional non-hunting companions maybe added at $1,500 per person. The highest winning auction bidder will have first choice of the WSF hunt dates with successive buyers in bid order choosing remaining dates. Two hunters will be on the island during each hunt period, although they will be in separate camps and will hunt separate areas. In 1998 WSF helped to open desert sheep hunting on the island, and nearly each year a Tiburon Island ram has taken the silver or gold award for desert bighorn sheep in both the archery and the firearms categories. These rams include numerous rams in the high 170s and 180s and one exceptional trophy scoring over 190 B&C points. In the 2010-2011 season, a buyer took a ram scoring 182 4/8 B&C, making it the New World Record with a muzzleloader. In the same season, other numerous 180+ rams were taken including a 187 1/8 B&C and 186 3/8 B&C. Starting with the 2010-2011 desert sheep hunting season, The Wild Sheep Foundation and Desert-Hunt, operated by Braulio and Luis Romero, have formed a partnership to conduct all government sanctioned hunting on Tiburon Island. Both WSF and Desert-Hunt are committed to conserving the exceptional sheep resource on the Island while at the same time preserving the special hunting opportunity it offers, and also ensuring community development programs for the Seri Community owners of this treasured landscape. Desert-Hunt is renowned for providing exceptional desert sheep hunts, and flawless and effortless permit processing, and it prides itself with camps and cuisine that rival the best in North America. You will experience an East African style safari while on your Tiburon Island hunt with WSF and Desert-Hunt. The revenue obtained from these permits is used to fund wildlife conservation projects on the island and social and community development programs in the local indigenous community. Wyoming Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Permit for 2012

SN

Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission & Department, the Wyoming Governor's Big Game License Coalition, and the Wyoming Wild Sheep Foundation are pleased to provide the Eastern Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation with a 2012 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep license for auction. The 2012 Wyoming Governor's Bighorn Sheep License is valid in any open hunt area having more than eight licenses issued. The number of licenses issued per hunt area may change from year to year. Seasons and license numbers for fall 2012 will be finalized in April 2012. In 2011, this license was valid in eight hunt areas: #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8/23. These hunt areas account for over 85% of Wyoming's annual Rocky Mountain sheep harvest. For further information, please contact Doug McWhirter at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, (307) 527-7125 or Kevin Hurley, Wyoming Wild Sheep Foundation at (307)578-8613. Th successful purchaser may hunt any open hunt area that qualifies in accordance with the above. The purchaser does not have to pick a specific hunt area and may hunt different hunt areas. The five-year waiting period between bighorn sheep licenses does not affect the ability to purchase a Governor's bighorn sheep license, and purchasing this license is independent of applying for a bighorn sheep license through the draw system. The license fee ($122 for Resident, $2,266 for Non-Resident) is waived. Preference points are not affected by the purchase of a Wyoming Governor's Bighorn Sheep License. 90% of the auction proceeds provide funding for Wyoming bighorn sheep projects via the Wyoming Governor's Big Game License Coalition.
