October 2011 Dear Confirmation Candidates and Parents: Confirmation at St. Mary Parish is administered each year to sophomores in the spring. It is an important sacrament that requires much preparation. Per the Catechism of the Catholic Church preparation should aim at leading the candidate toward a more intimate union with Christ, more familiarity with the Holy Spirit, and awaken a sense of belonging to the Catholic Church as well as the parish community.(CCC1309) Trying to accomplish these goals we use the Catechism as the basis of instruction. As freshmen, students learned about the Liturgy and Sacraments, including Confirmation. Sophomores focus on living as Christians, with the help of the Holy Spirit, by studying morals and commandments. This information is timely as students are at a point in their life where they must make important decisions on their own; students should attend all classes, except if they are sick. We hope students will continue their education the next two years to finish basic Catholic instruction. Always remember Confirmation and high school religious education should not be the end of your growth in faith, but the beginning of a lifelong journey. Each candidate must perform at least 20 Hours of Christian Community Service, to help awaken a sense of belonging and to imitate Christ. · Confirmation community service must be a Corporal Work of Mercy, Spiritual Work of Mercy, or Parish Work. See the Christian Community Service Record form for details and a list of ideas. · Hours may be earned starting in June the year before Confirmation, and must be completed one month before Confirmation. If these hours qualify for P-W community service, you must keep a separate record as forms are not retained once hours are verified complete. P-W community service does not necessarily qualify for these hours; remember service must be Christian in nature. Each candidate will need to choose a Sponsor and Confirmation Name as soon as possible. · The Confirmation Sponsor must be an adult who has been Confirmed, is a practicing Catholic, and who has witnessed the love of Christ and the faith of the Catholic Church to the candidate. They should also be someone who will pray for the candidate during preparation for Confirmation and for continued growth in faith. Since a sponsor should be a role model who the candidate can closely identify with, candidates should choose a sponsor of the same sex. · Candidates can retain their baptismal name for Confirmation to show the continuity between Baptism and Confirmation or a new name may be chosen, per the Diocesan Handbook on Confirmation. Choosing the name of a deceased or living relative may be a good choice if that person is someone whose faith you admire. However, the name chosen must be a saint's name and candidates must research to learn about the saint's life. The saint should be someone who the candidate will rely on for spiritual assistance and intercession, and whose life the candidate admires and will seek to model. Again it is appropriate that the saint be of the same sex as the candidate. Confirmation names are subject to approval. Please see the For Confirmation Candidates sheet for more information about choosing a sponsor and name. Share the For All Sponsors sheet with sponsors. Both the candidate and sponsor must complete portions of the Confirmation Registration form as soon as possible.
