At 70 years old, Eddie Nelson -- who goes by the nickname Old School -- has the physique of a man decades younger; his arms look like they were plucked from the torso of a 25-year-old.

Old-School Guru

S

omeone told me recently that 27 is the age at which your body starts killing off more cells than it creates, so, essentially, it's the age at which you really start dying. Now, I can't confirm the veracity of that statement (I Googled it and found mostly websites chronicling myriad musicians who started and finished dying at age 27), but it made me feel as if, before long, I'll be relegated to a life of plucking gray hairs and counting crow's feet. Of course, fretting about aging isn't going to make a person any less old, assuming the "you're only as old as you feel" saw is true. But Jacksonville resident Eddie Nelson has mastered the art of being young by feeling young. At 70 years old, Nelson -- who goes by the nickname Old School -- has the physique of a man decades younger. A Lycra workout shirt clings to his impressive pectorals and six-pack abs; his arms look like they were plucked from the torso of a 25-yearold. He's not body-builder bulky, but solid, toned. His claim to fame is the ability to do wide-arm pull-ups with a

AFFORDABLE CHIROPRACTIC

252 Solana Road, Ponte Vedra, 285-2243 3546 St. Johns Bluff Road S., Jacksonville, 996-2243 145 Hilden Road, Ste. 123, Ponte Vedra, 247-2243 Doctors R.G. Packo, Lundy Tacti, Wayne Gordon and M.S. Willens make up the team at this chiropractic office, offering medical care, physical therapy and massage. They treat back pain, sports injuries, herniated disks, arthritis, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia and sciatica. Decompression therapy and acupuncture are also available.

45-pound weight fastened around his waist, a feat that earned him an endorsement from Ripley's Believe it or Not! for which he occasionally does appearances. A manager and fitness consultant at World Gym on Beach Boulevard, Nelson jovially offers greetings and goodbyes as people enter and exit the facility. Besides being a fitness guru, it's obvious that Nelson is a people-person and that this job -- which he's held for about five years -- renders him blissful. He also competes in senior citizens' track-and-field meets, he's authored a book called "Old School Workout" and he's working on a series of instructional videos for Jacksonvillebased production company Centaflix Fitness. Nelson believes in the importance of exercise, to be sure, but he's also promoting the idea that age doesn't have to dictate one's condition or quality of life. "God, as far as I'm concerned, put His arms around me and said, `You go out there and show people that 70 can be just the same as 45,'" he says. "`You're not getting old, you're aging gracefully.'" Physical fitness has always been important to Nelson. "I used to read the comic books, and in the back they had [a cartoon of ] the guy on the beach and the little skinny guy comes by with the girl, the big guy kicks sand in the little guy's face and walks off with the girl. I said, `That's never going to happen to me.'" But it wasn't until he was 64 that Nelson realized he was unique. He recalls working out at Gold's Gym when he was approached by two men who wanted to use the tricep machine. When they were done with their reps, they moved to reduce the weight for him. Nelson balked, and lifted the same amount they had lifted. The two men, Nelson later discovered, were NFL players Donovin Darius and Brian Dawkins. The men were "astonished" by his strength, he says, and suggested that he might be able to "market" himself. Nelson did, and he hasn't stopped since. "I'm having so much fun," he says with joy. "I feel younger. I am younger. Tomorrow's not promised to you. Today's not promised to you. Life is so good, but it's short." Gwynedd Stuart [email protected]

Kicking the Habit

T

he New Year is here, and with it the ritualistic resolutions: Stop smoking, eat less, drink less (or, in my case, more) and get in shape. Sure, you could put down those Cheetos and that 57-ounce Mountain Dew and take a walk around the block. Or you could join a local health club and try to set a personal best deadlift record. If burning calories is the goal, how about kicking someone in the face? "If I put you on a treadmill, and you stared at a wall or counted the minutes until you were done, you would lose interest," says personal trainer/strength-and-conditioning coach and MMA bad-boy Matt Hendrick. "But if I get you doing some cardio while you're throwing punches and learning how to hit and kick correctly, in three or four months, you'll be doing 45 minutes of straight boxing." Hendrick is part of a budding community of fitness junkies who are turning to modified fisticuffs to stay in shape. The popularity of mixed-martial arts (thanks to the televised brutality of "The Ultimate Fighting Championship") has led many a testosterone-fueled dude to his local gym to become the next Gracie. But it isn't just chokehold and roundhouse kicking skills that can be gained from devotion to the ancient arts. Working out your arms with punches, your legs and glutes with kicks and squats, your shoulders and back with push-ups, your endurance with jump-roping and, most importantly, your core with a bit of full-body action, a workout heavy on martial arts can burn as many calories as running around your neighborhood, if not more. And you don't have take a foot to the groin to see the results. "There doesn't have to be a lot of impact to create a good workout," says Kyn Schilling, an instructor at the Ponte Vedra Beach YMCA and a personal trainer. "For the first-time student, sparring or kickboxing can be intimidating. But, like any other workout, you get out of it what you put into it. People invest in it for a mental edge, to get in shape, to let out some aggression." Hendrick, who has been cage-fighting competitively for six years, and a pro for two and a half, echoes the sentiment. "It is the fastest-growing trend right now. Schools have heavy bags in their gyms now. UNF has a boxing club. It's a great workout because you get all the discipline and all the benefits -- minus getting punched in the face." Smiley's Combat Athletics and First Coast Full Contact, both located in Orange Park, offer variations on the kickboxing workout. Smiley's focuses on intense mixed-martial arts training, including Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, boxing and Muay-Thai kickboxing (a particularly rough sport defined by "low kicks to the thighs"). First Coast Full Contact also specializes in fitness-focused mixed-martial arts, teaching kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga in a no-frills setting with a ring on Blanding Boulevard. Schilling and Hendrick contend that a person can burn anywhere from 300 to 750 calories in a good 30- to 45minute workout. But it isn't just your abs and glutes getting sculpted, Grasshopper. You also work on your mind. Schilling,

who instructs mostly women, explains: "A lot of my students invest in this for a mental edge. Women get a venue to let out their aggression. I think kickboxing is so popular with women because they like to be in control of their workout. Mentally and physically, they are in control. The groups of women I train are bad-ass girls. They are serious about their workouts." Hendrick says fitness just requires a little motivation, something to make the workout seem a little more fun. And kickboxing can be a righteous good time. "Adults are a lot like children when it comes to fitness," says Hendrick. "Get a group of kids on a field, they won't do anything. But throw a ball out there, they'll run around for hours. It's the same with adults. You have to find what you like and work with it, not against it. It's hard work, and it does require effort, but you will get to the point where you start getting results." ob Manusca stands just inside his Atlantic Boulevard storefront, saying goodbye to the morning's first class. He's stripped to the waist despite the frigid outside air, and even the January cold can't diminish the studio's penetrating heat. Manusca is the owner of Bikram Yoga Jacksonville and a longtime practitioner of this distinctive form of hot yoga. Performed in a studio where the thermostat is kept at a sweltering 105 degrees and further warmed by an array of space heaters and humidifiers, Bikram Yoga represents a physical challenge on many levels. Indeed, the goal for those attempting it for the first time is merely trying to stay in the room for the entire 90 minutes. Even absent the challenge of the 26 yoga poses, it requires some endurance. "The first few times I tried it, I just wanted it to end," he admits. Manusca started practicing Bikram yoga almost by chance. A Division 2 men's volleyball assistant coach who worked at both Lees McRae College in North Carolina and FSCJ, Manusca first heard about Bikram four and a half years ago, and was persuaded to take a crack at it. Initially, he could barely endure the humid studio, but he soon found it addictive -- even healing. "Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and sweating is the ultimate release," he says. "Tension, toxins ... [it all] comes out through your skin." Manusca believes that water -- whether it's being ingested or excreted -- is part of a larger universe of benefits. Glenda Paulich also believes in the healing power of fluids, though she has a somewhat different vantage point. The owner of Colonics With Care on Old Kings Road South, Paulich has spent the past 14 years irrigating her clients' colons. Colon hydrotherapy or high-colonics are similar to enemas, but flush a much longer section of the colon. Adherents swear by colonics as an aid in digestion and weight loss and as a means of restoring health. Paulich maintains that by flushing away toxins that have accumulated in the lower intestine, colonics "unclog" the system, allowing the body's waste elimination functions to work more efficiently. Some argue that colon flushing unnecessarily interferes with a system designed to work without help, but Paulich strongly disagrees. Human digestion may work fine when humans are eating as they were meant to: fruits, vegetables, unprocessed foods. But given that most people consume an unhealthy quantity and quality of food, along with alcohol, caffeine and

myriad prescription drugs, Paulich says, people sometimes need a little help on the back end. Of course, there's still a powerful "ick" factor at work, something Paulich herself had to overcome when she went to get her first colonic. But she found the experience so transformative, she not only continued getting colonics, she began giving them. Today, her six-room facility services hundreds of clients in what she calls a "clinical but welcoming environment." The healing power of water couldn't be more central than at the Spa at Amelia Island Plantation, which offers a variety of water-based therapies, including Aqua Chi and aquatherapy. The former sends an slight electrical charge in through a foot bath in an effort to rebalance internal energies; the latter uses aromatherapies, salts and minerals to detoxify and relax. The

"The cure for anything is salt water -- sweat, tears or the sea." -- Isak Dinesen

Spa also offers Watsu massage, in which clients are massaged, manipulated and stretched by spa therapist while floating in a large warm pool. The weightlessness aids in relaxation and flexibility, and when combined with various aromatherapies, seaweed wraps and relaxation sessions in warm, luxurious robes, the three-and-a-half-hour session promises to be transformative. Healing Waters Clinic in St. Augustine offers a variety of holistic approaches to health (including hydrotherapy -- a sort of mingling of water and massage that has been mainstreamed by the arrival of the Jacuzzi), and it sells and brews several types of teas and tonics for clients. The tea bar (open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) offers brews that focus on everything from relaxation to detoxification, strength and stamina. The Green Wizard, for example, is a hot blend of mountain green tea, gotu kola and peppermint that promises "subtle mood altering effects" that the clinic asserts are "quite pleasing." After a day of hot yoga and high-colonics, that sounds like a well-deserved brewski. Anne Schindler [email protected]

The Fashion Chakra

I

'm wearing a tablecloth today. It's a vintage tablecloth from the late 1950s or early 1960s printed in autumnal colors -- green, gold and brown flowers and vines -- and it wraps around like a waiter's apron. When I bought it at an outdoor market in 2001, a pair of green plastic grapes dangled from the ties. I've always liked the colors and the refashioning sensibility of the woman who made it. But I've worn it in public exactly once, and afterward, I cut the grapes off. I've tried it on a bunch of times since, then folded it up and stowed it away for some future me who again dresses with fashion abandon. A recent meeting with style consultant Jeannie Koss forced me to revisit that decision. No matter what your size or place in life, Koss says, fashion has the power to change your attitude. "We all have to get dressed," she observes. "If what you wear mentally and emotionally fits right and feels right, you look good and that helps build confidence." Since I am north of 50, fashion has begun to give me angst for the first time in my life. My impulses don't square with what I think is appropriate for a woman my age. I've jealously eyed the young girls in the office, in their thigh-length skirts. I've shied from wearing a mishmash of styles and patterns, a clash of fashion verbiage only the knowing would understand. And I no longer even know if I should wear my vintage doublebreasted, leopard swing coat. The fact that magazines pronounced animal prints back in style made it worse. I'd not only look clownish, but desperate. I thought inviting a professional personal stylist to peek into my closet would bring out the fashion rebel in me. I assumed Koss would advise me how to dress in an appropriately Southern-conservative-churchgoing way, and that I'd ignore her. And I was certain she'd be mortified by my wild-and-loud Florida vacation bellbottoms. She likes them. "They're so Pucci!" Koss says when I pull a pair of lined orange, pink and yellow-flowered thrift-store slacks out of the closet. Although Koss suggests traditional partners for the pants, such as a fitted, white, button-front blouse and gold sandals (think classic 1970s Palm Beach cocktail style) instead of a punked-out tight black T-shirt and pointy-toed shoes, she's equally pleased when I drag out the leopard-print jacket. "You have to wear that!" And what about the tube of thin black polyester that expands into a knee-length skirt that I'd recently bought on deep discount at Walmart? I thought I'd throw her a challenge. To work? Wear it with black tights, she advises. Thankfully, Koss' message is that I can wear anything I want, but should work off a background of classics. She suggests Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy as inspirations. Buy a classic trenchcoat, fitted button-downs, black turtlenecks, cardigans, a pair of jeans, she advises. With an armful of wooden bangles or a large turquoise medallion, the outfit can go from safari chic to '60s beatnik. Koss (whose father, Ron Chamblin, owns Chamblin Bookmine) is just now launching her style-consulting business, after years of shopping with friends and advising them. She charges $35 an hour, for which she'll help you weed through or rearrange your closet, educate you on what looks good or go with you on a thrift-store expedition. Dressed according to her own formula -- black turtleneck, blue jeans, leopard-print jacket, red wool knee-length coat -- Koss points to her black cloth chunky-heeled pumps, twisting them this way and that. "They're Gucci," she says. "I bought them for $7 at a thrift store. They'd be $600 new!" Susan Cooper Eastman [email protected]

Here at the Western World

I

n the documentary "Enlighten Up," director Kate Churchill tries an experiment with 29-year-old New York journalist Nick Rosen. Basically a non-believer, Rosen is tasked with traveling the world for six months searching for a yoga practice that leads him to enlightenment. Rosen, a skeptic at every turn, finds himself caught in a frustrating loop of fitnessclub classes, conversations with students, teachers and gurus (all with vastly different interpretations), and even some cult-like exercises, including "laugh therapy." Rosen's journey encapsulates what many of the estimated 18 million Americans who are involved in yoga have gone through. That's because there are almost as many permutations of yoga as there are practitioners, and even those are constantly evolving. Eastern teachings tend to focus on the search for god within oneself, the search for oneself in god. The Western version, as it plays out in health clubs throughout the States, takes a more corporeal form. For Northeast Floridians, the choices are wide -- dozens of studios, any number of styles. And in many cases, what begins as a quest to stay fit evolves into a path to, well, enlightenment. "When I first found yoga, I felt very much uplifted," says Jacksonville Beach resident Kimberly Waugh, a yoga instructor for 10 years. "It was a vehicle for me to feel better, emotionally and physically. I was terribly addicted to various drugs, very much addicted to emotions and abusive situations. Addicted to the drama." But what began as a physical pursuit turned into an important source of selfempowerment. "It was the combination of the message the teacher was giving, that I was a good person, that I had something of value to contribute." After a year of practicing, Waugh's instructor left for India to study at an ashram (a locus for yoga education) and asked her to take over his classes. She took to it quickly and soon decided to become a certified instructor. Waugh signed up for the Two Suns Rising certification program, taught by Jacksonville's yoga instructor Didier Razon. "I did his training and got the 200-hour certification, and then I realized [up to] that point that I knew absolutely nothing about yoga."

Therein lies yoga's core conundrum. While it allows those who practice it to delve deeper, it doesn't require that investment. "I can honestly say that you don't have to know much about the history [of yoga] for it to be beneficial," says Waugh. "But when you do ... it's like getting to know your grandma. You feel more connected, you have more sensitivity -- or respect or appreciation -- for the practice." Razon, a yoga instructor for nearly 15 years and a practitioner since he was a teen, has traveled the globe teaching and learning. "For the true practitioner of yoga, it will be a spiritual pursuit," he says. "The postures are only a means to a bigger place, which is finding the connection to the inner self." For a man who has spent time practicing and teaching in other countries -- Morocco, India, the South of France -- Northeast Florida offers its own challenges. Since some yoga classes involve chanting, meditation and Middle Eastern music, Razon has met with some resistance from the largely conservative and generally religious community. But he says he tries to promote a general concept of god, the universal god that resides within (and without) all of us. "So far, I have been pretty fortunate to never get fired. But sometimes I have to be careful," says Razon. Then he chuckles: "If I were in New York or California, maybe people would be more relaxed about it. Jacksonville is kind of, let's put it this way: We're a little bit behind when it comes to New Age things, you know." In the end, yoga is what you make it. Nick Rosen discovered the practice could bring him to some emotional highs -- and lows -- if not enlightenment. He gave up yoga shortly after filming. But it affected him deeply while he was there. "Ultimately, it brings out some aspects of people that they can identify as good, and maybe [they can] carry it off their mat and be a kinder person," says Waugh. "But if you do yoga without the heart involved -- maybe just stretching and going through some kind of acrobatics -- and you're a jerk, well, then you're just a flexible jerk." John E. WALTER COKER

Donna McGee, owner of Green Lotus Organics, calls her all-natural, organic soaps "food for your skin."

Cleaning Up

When they were young girls, both Donna McGee and Leisa Carle were taught the art of making soap by their grandmothers, and both continue to make and sell soap today. But the reasons behind their enterprises could hardly be more different. For McGee, owner of Green Lotus Organics, a master herbalist and aroma therapist, the focus is almost entirely on health. Ten years after having a pacemaker implanted to keep her heart beating, her health has become a singular concern. When she read somewhere that "30 percent of what you put on your skin goes into your bloodNatural Markets, Bead Here Now, Midnight Sun Imports, New Life Health Foods and BioMax Health Food & Grocery. She also teaches classes on making your own green cleaning products, lotions, salves and baby products. Carle's road to soap-making was also one born of necessity -- financial necessity. Fired from her job as a postal employee nearly a decade ago, she was uncertain what to do next. She eventually decided to start her own natural soap, lotion and makeup company, Flour Sack Creations. Carle now works fulltime in her "soap barn" in Satsuma and has been selling her goods at the St. Augustine Saturday's Farmer's Market since 2001. She took her grandmother's recipe (coupled with some herbal aromatherapy classes) and "kicked it up a notch." Carle's table at the market offers body sprays, lotions, perfume oils, lip balms and bath salts in a variety of scents (lemongrass, sunflower, peppermint), and with the help of her daughter, she's also started her own makeup line, featuring eye shadow, blush and foundation made from minerals and clay. "They're a big hit with the college girls at the Gainesville market I go to," she says. And at $5 apiece, they're an affordable bit of organic beauty. Carle dreams big, saying that someday she'd love to be "the `body' person to the rich and famous." But in the meantime, she's more than happy to be having success on a smaller scale. "I think I have a great product line," says Carle. "I would love to find my niche in the market and grow into that." Kara Pound [email protected]

stream," she says she decided to create her own all-natural, organic soaps and lotions at home. Currently, McGee makes about 50 kinds of scented and unscented bar soaps. She uses everything from cucumber and parsley to ground walnut hulls, lavender and goat's milk. "The stuff looks different every time I make it," she says. "It's completely organic. You could eat it. It's food for your skin." McGee sells her soaps for about $4 a bar and her lotions for $6 to $7 a bottle at stores around Northeast Florida, including Grassroots
