Point to Ponder: Think about it for a moment. If you faced a situation a disease, a house ablaze, a tornado - that created within you the fear that you were about to die, what would be your last thoughts? Bank account? Prestige? Dirty dishes in the sink? Your upcoming vacation? Prayer: You have plans for me, O Lord. You have declared that You have plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plan to give me a future and hope. Amen.

Health Emphasis

Childhood Obesity

First Lady, Michelle Obama is on a mission to get our children healthy. Obesity is an epidemic in America and childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years. The prediction is that one third of all children born after 1999 will suffer from diabetes or other weight related diseases at some point in their lives. Obese children are also victims of frequent bullying and teasing which affect their self-esteem. To help your child maintain a healthy weight, balance the calories your child eats from foods and beverages with the calories your child uses through physical activity and normal growth. Children and teens should NOT be placed on a weight reduction diet without the consultation of a health care provider. Instead, their calories should be reduced while their normal growth catches up to their weight and height. Encourage healthy eating habits: - Provide plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products. - Include low-fat or non-fat milk or dairy products. - Choose lean meats, poultry, fish, lentils and beans for protein. - Serve reasonably-sized portions. - Encourage your family to drink lots of water. - Limit sugar-sweetened beverages. - Limit consumption of sugar and saturated fat. Help kids stay active to balance their caloric intake with exercise. Encourage participation in physical activity and avoid too much sedentary time. Exercise has many health benefits such as; strengthening bones, decreasing blood pressure, reducing stress and anxiety, increasing self-esteem, and helping with weight management. Remember that children imitate adults. Start adding physical activity to your own daily routine and encourage your child to join you. Some examples of moderate intensity physical activity include: brisk walking, playing tag, jumping rope, playing soccer, swimming, dancing, etc. Reduce sedentary time. Help children avoid too much sedentary time. Quiet time for reading and homework is fine, but limit the time your children watch television, play video games, or surf the web to 2 hours or less per day. Encourage your children to find fun activities to do with family members or friends on their own that simply involve more activity.

Q. How can we cultivate healthy and deep communication with our children? Tom and Jeannie Elliff, in their book Letters to Lovers, highlight the importance of asking questions. Here is a list of ten questions parents could ask their children to cultivate communication: 1. How well do you feel we are getting along together? 2. What do you think we could do to improve our relationship? 3. Do you believe that I really care about who you are as an individual, or just how you behave? 4. Have I ever made a promise to you that I didn'keep? t 5. Do you feel that I respect you? Do you respect me? 6. Is there something you would enjoy doing with me? What would keep us from doing this together? 7. Is there some secret you are keeping from me, out of fear that I would love you less? 8. What can I do to show you that I want to be more like Christ? 9. Is there something I do that annoys you, or embarrasses you?

10. How could I best express to you just how much I love you, and how honored I feel to

be your parent? Why not schedule a special time with your son(s) or daughter(s) to ask two or three of these questions? Don'be discouraged if your child doesn'give you much of an answer; t t be patient and keep listening. For information concerning MEG, Premarital and Post marital relationship questions, please contact Rev. O. T. Tomes 704-391-3840 or email [email protected]

Married Couples are on the Endangered Species List! The illusions created by Hollywood, the media and the booming romance industry are destroying today'marriages. Satan would have you believe that all of the answers to s your marriage lie within you. This is not true. In reality, the answers lie in God. The will to reach for those answers lies in you. Every couple who wants to grow their relationship with their spouse and with Christ are invited to join us beginning TODAY at 9:30a in the Library on the 3rd floor at 3400 Beatties Ford Road. The book is " Marriage ROCKS for Christian Couples" Dr. Harold L. Arnold, Jr., which can be purchased in by The Gallery For information and questions, please contact Rev. O.T. Tomes at 704-392-3840 or [email protected]
