"Sanjo Bridge, Kyoto". (Kyoto Sanjo Ohashi) Crisp impression with very good "bokashi" shading in the sky, river and hills of Higashi mountain. Kendall Brown reports in his book "Shin-Hanga" that Goyo is somewhat honoring Hiroshige with this print as he used the same scene, only reversed, looking east instead of looking west. Here Hiroshige has presented another distant view framed by a large foreground object, in this case a pleasure boat setting out from the Mukjima side of the Sumida River and heading for the San'ya Canal. "Sakasai Ferry", (Sakasai no Watashi), From the series "100 Famous Views of Edo" (Meisho edo hyakkei) published by Uoya Eikichi. #58 in the series, #67 as published in the table of contents. The perspective is nicely framed as a birds eye view. Three white Chinese egrets (Kara-shirasagi) stand in the river while two others swoop in. In the right upper, two ferry boats have crossed the river, landing at the settlement of Shinmachi. Humans are relegated to a tiny role in this view. We are looking Southeast toward the "The Kawaguchi Ferry" (Kawaguchino watashi) and "Zenkoji Temple" (Zenko-ji). From the series "100 Famous Views of Edo" (Meisho edo hyakkei) published by Uoya Eikichi. #20 in the series as published in the table of contents. Framed from a birds eye perspective we see at the lower right the ferry making it's way across the Arakawa River (As the Sumida was known in its upper reaches). It's main function was to transport passengers to the Zenko-ji Temple, partially shown under the title cartouche. This was normally a quite "View on Nihonbashi Tori 1-chrome", (Nihonbashi Tori-itchome ryakuzu), From the series "100 Famous Views of Edo" (Meisho edo hyakkei) published by Uoya Eikichi. #58 in the series, #44 as published in the table of contents. Some wings are unprinted with color to let the paper color show through. The Autumn print shown here groups the butterflies into a pillar with transparent tans, yellows, "Butterflies on a Beach", edition of 50, ca mid this #50. printed on heavy weight white 1980s BFK Rives wove paper, with watermark.

"Study of Nude", one of three nude studies in print. Blair indicates an edition of 90 with blocks cut by Mayeda. Reference: Abe Catalogue #94, Blair #303 (Toledo 1930). The "jizuri" seal on Yoshida Hiroshi prints is the notation he used to signify that the block was carved and printed under his supervision and met his quality requirement. It is only used on lifetime prints. "Yasaka Shrine", Abe Catalogue #203, published by Yoshida Hiroshi on a light weight Japanese paper for the domestic market. One of nine prints of Japanese Scenery Yoshida created this year, along with the eight print "Scenes of Cherry Blossom's" series. The Yasaka Shrine (Yasakajinja), also known as the Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto. The popular city shrine is famous for its Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's largest festivals. Yasaka Shrine was first built in 656 AD. It was dedicated to Susano-o, the god of prosperity and good health, "Ashura". From the 1954 series of Buddhist Prints, about 15 different images of an un-stated edition size, but probably less than 50. This print shows the guardian deity of Buddha. We see three pair of arms - one pair praying, another in supplication, a third pair offering embrace. A strong, complex, cubist type image. This is then repeated three times - as a black shadow, as a rust color enlarged version and a a light gray that is pushed down and partially cut off by the margin. Black is a predominant color in his Buddhist prints, unlike any earlier or later print series. The "Senju Kannon". From the 1954 series of Buddhist Prints, about 15 different images of an un-stated edition size, but probably less than 50. This print shows an abstract depiction of an eight century statute Senju Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The statue has 20 pairs of arms reaching out form the body, this then is encircled with an abundance of smaller arms with hands extending outward. The effect is that there is unlimited help available to those who call on her. Hodaka's technique of printing and coloring is as important as the subject. Black is a predominant color in his

"Landscape - Aquarius". The Aquarius Zodiac Sign from the "Landscape Constellation" series, printed on heavy weight hand made paper. Edition of 100, this #59. One of 12 Zodiac prints in the Constellation series which is the final part of a larger "Landscape" series. The Zodiac series ended a creative period which ran from 1963 through 1973 in which his works experimented with mythology, old, modern and nonsense. This particular print shows another aspect of that period - that being an area left unprinted between different parts of the image. Many elements are "Moon and Plum Tree". Published by Yoshida Studios, un-stated edition size. Blocks cut by the artist. This print illustrates the renewal of life in the springtime - an ancient Japanese theme. Another version of this print exists without the moon and the blossoms in pink; again 1970 when most of her woodblocks were done. Besides cutting her own blocks, Kiso also helped her husband, Toshi, cut his. "Okaramon" published by Yoshida Studios. Chuban tate-e. Located in Nikko at the Toshogu Shrine, Toshi depicts the Shomen Karamon (the entrance gate of the Shrine proper) which leads to the hall of worship, the Haimen Karamon. Beyond this lies the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Lanterns donated by the three Tokugawa families and other lords stand in front of the fence (not visible here). The gate is in the Chinese style with profuse decoration. The Shrine was begun in 1617 with most buildings completed in "Pagoda in Kyoto" published by Yoshida Studios. Oban yoko-e. Toshi completed four prints in 1942, his last until after the war. This appears to be the Pagoda at To-ji Temple. The pagoda is part of the To-ji temple in central Kyoto. This is a Buddhist Temple of the Shingon sect. At 57 meters high, it is currently the tallest wooden tower in Japan.

"Shinjuku" from the three print series "Tokyo at Night" published by Yoshida Studios. This print took 18 blocks and 40 separate impressions. Each person here has an active presence, more communal than any works of his father where people were included in the scene. However, only the two women and the child in the foreground are fully presented. The others are more ghostly forms which may symbolically refer to the absence of so many men in the wartime activities of that time. Shinjuku was an entertainment district near several major rail stations.
