Executive summary

This white paper describes the procedures required to enhance multipathing I/O functionality within Citrix XenServer using tools and utilities designed for use with HP StorageWorks products. These procedures were validated by HP in July 2009. Target audience: The procedures contained in this document are designed for system administrators and hardware integrators.

Introduction

Citrix has officially supported Device Mapper Multipath IO (DM-MPIO) since the release of XenServer 5.x, which provides a generic version of /etc/multipath.conf that can be modified to properly interface with your attached storage devices. HP provides utilities to support DM-MPIO on HP ProLiant servers attached to HP StorageWorks storage devices. At this time, HP does not offer DM-MPIO packages intended specifically for Citrix XenServer; however, the packages designed for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.x can be used with Citrix XenServer. This document shows how to configure the HP Device Mapper Multipath (HPDM Multipath) Enablement Kit for HP StorageWorks Disk Arrays and Fibre Channel utilities packages from HP on retail editions of Citrix XenServer 5.5. Procedures apply to HP StorageWorks arrays with Fibre Channel connectivity.

Note: These packages cannot be used in conjunction with Citrix XenServer editions from HP.

Downloading the packages

Procedures are provided for downloading HPDM Multipath and Fibre Channel utilities packages from the HP website.

HPDM Multipath package

The current version of the HPDM Multipath package (distributed as HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz) is 4.3.01. Perform the following steps to download the appropriate HP Device Mapper Multipath Enablement Kit and release notes for HP StorageWorks disk arrays:

1. Go to http://www.hp.com/support/downloads. 2. Under Storage, click Storage Software. 3. Under Storage Infrastructure Software, click Multi-path Device Mapper for Linux Software and then

select Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server (x86).

4. In the Description column, click the title, "Device Mapper Multipath Enablement Kit for HP

StorageWorks Disk Arrays" associated with the latest version.

5. To download the enablement kit, click Download.

HP Fibre Channel utilities package

The current version of the HP Fibre Channel utilities (distributed as hp-fc-enablement-2009-0330.tar.gz) is 8.02.00.06.05.03-k2. Perform the following steps to download the HP Linux Inbox driver enablement kit and release notes for QLogic host bus adapters (HBAs) and mezzanine cards:

1. Go to http://www.hp.com/support/downloads. 2. Under Storage, click Storage Networking. 3. Under Host Bus Adapters, click HP StorageWorks PCIe 4Gb Host Bus Adapter, click HP

StorageWorks FC1142SR 4Gb PCIe Host Bus Adapter, and then select Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Server (x86).

4. In the Description column, click the title, "Linux Inbox driver kit". 5. To download the driver kit, click Download.

Note: The RPM package that will be extracted from the above download supports both QLogic and Emulex HBAs.

Installation and configuration

The following procedure provides instructions for installing and configuring HPDM Multipath and Fibre Channel utilities packages on Citrix XenServer 5.5. On completion, multipathing is enabled. Perform the following steps:

1. Copy the two files (HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz and hp-fc-enablement-2009-03-30.tar.gz) into

/tmp on the Citrix XenServer host.

2. Extract multipath.conf.HPTemplate.RHEL5 from HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz via a console session

on the Citrix XenServer host: [[email protected] ~]# cd /tmp [[email protected] ~]# ls HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz hp-fc-enablement-2009-03-30.tar.gz [[email protected] ~]# tar -zxvf HPDMmultipath-4.3.0.tar.gz --strip=2 HPDMmultipath-4.3.0/conf/multipath.conf.HPTemplate.RHEL5 [roo[email protected] ~]# cp /etc/multipath.conf /etc/multipath.conf.original [[email protected] ~]# cp multipath.conf.HPTemplate.RHEL5 /etc/multipathenable.conf [[email protected] ~]# vi /etc/multipath-enable.conf

4. Save the file you have just edited. 5. Extract and install fibreutils-3.0-3.i386.rpm from hp-fc-enablement-2009-03-30.tar.gz:

[[email protected] ~]# tar -zxvf hp-fc-enablement-2009-03-30.tar.gz --strip=1 hp-fc-enablement-2009-03-30/fibreutils-3.0-3.i386.rpm [[email protected] ~]# rpm -ivh fibreutils-3.0-3.i386.rpm

6. Test the Fibre Channel utilities package by running hp_rescan l to list HBAs in the server:

[[email protected] ~]# hp_rescan -l QLogic adapters: /sys/class/scsi_host/2 /sys/class/scsi_host/3 Emulex adapters: [[email protected] ~]# Complete the procedure as follows using the Citrix XenCenter console:

7. 8.

Put the XenServer host in maintenance mode. Select the General tab and then select Properties.

9.

Select Multipathing. Check Enable multipathing on this server, as shown in Figure 1.

10. Exit from maintenance mode. 11. Create a storage repository and select a LUN located on the SAN.

6

After configuration, the paths will be displayed as shown in Figure 2.
