Solution overview

Many SMBs have limited budgets and can't afford as many computers as they'd like. Others may have computers but lack sufficient IT resources to keep them secure and running smoothly. With Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server (WMS) 2011 Standard and Premium editions, you can use a single computer to give multiple users access to computing for a fraction of the purchase, maintenance, and operating costs of the traditional one-to-one computing model. According to a Forrester Consulting study, 66% savings in energy consumption and associated costs can be achieved because you're only powering one computer and its associated stations, rather than multiple computers.1 HP has two solutions for "host" computers to address this need: · HP MultiSeat ms6000 Series Desktop for Standard, Premium, and Academic editions as part of an HP OEM solution or Volume License offering for academic as well as commercial customers. For HP MultiSeat information, see www.hp.com/go/multiseat. · HP ProLiant entry-level servers can also be utilized as the host, coupling it with the Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium edition via the HP OEM Reseller Option Kit (ROK) or Microsoft channel Volume License. The WMS 2011 Premium edition has features for small business to address the needs of seasonality, management controls, and lowering IT costs for Remote Desktop Services (formerly named Terminal Services), such as the ability to join an Active Directory domain as a member server.

WMS 2011 enables businesses to: · Give each user an individual computing experience · Provide every user with a unique account · Easily manage user accounts · Easily share files, videos, and more with and between groups of users · Install an application once and see it appear automatically on all user stations · Easily monitor the system Differences between Standard and Premium editions are in the areas of user support and domain join: · Standard edition supports 10 stations and does not join an Active Directory domain. · Premium edition supports 20 stations and will join an Active Directory domain as well as support Hyper-V capabilities in a 1+1 licensing model.

About Windows MultiPoint Server 2011

WMS is an operating system that can be used for multi-user, remote desktop computing scenarios. Unlike other solutions on the market, Windows MultiPoint Server is built with the Windows Server 2008 R2 platform at its core and thus can run Windows applications. Support can be obtained through Microsoft or HP, or our mutual Channel Partners, so SMBs have access to the operating system's full capabilities--as well as the latest updates--and can be confident that they are getting the experience they expect.

A single computer running WMS 2011 Premium can support one primary station and up to 20 simultaneously connected stations (with the domain join capability supported). Windows MultiPoint Server 2011 Premium supports Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization in two ways: · WMS 2011 Premium can be deployed as a guest operating system running on a Hyper-V host server. When running in a virtual machine, it supports only Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections, not USB-connected stations or direct-connected stations plugged into video cards. · WMS 2011 Premium can itself be a Hyper-V host used to run virtual machines.
