Narrator's Point of View

Display the sentences and read each aloud. Ask students if the story is about you or someone else. I talked to the neighbors. We decided to help each other create a community garden. I already had great ideas! (you) Although he felt lonely at first, Amir got to know his neighbors when they created a community garden. (someone else) Explain: Writers use certain pronouns to show who is telling the story, or the point of view (circle I and We in the display). Point of view is the way someone thinks or feels about things. A story written as if the character is talking directly to you is called a first-person story. When a writer tells about someone else, the writer uses pronouns like he and they (circle the pronouns in the display). That's called a third-person story.

Point of View · A narrator is who tells the story. The narrator can be the writer or a character. · Their point of view is how they feel and think. · Look for pronouns like I, we, he, she, or they.

2 Practice

Use the Multi-Level Strategies to tailor the practice to students' proficiency levels:

BEGINNING Write the sentences below and ask students to tell if the narrator is telling a first-person or a third-person story. Confirm responses by asking whom the writer is talking about and identifying the pronouns. Circle the pronouns as students identify them. 1. I looked around the corner, and there was a small area of dirt next to the building. "Sarah," I said. "Over here. Here's a great place to plant some flowers!" (first-person story) 2. Raphael and his neighbors hated the alley between the buildings. It was all concrete! Raphael was discouraged. He had an idea. Maybe they could plan a garden using potted plants! (third-person story) INTERMEDIATE Provide copies of the sentences used for Beginning students or create new ones that demonstrate each point of view. Then ask students to circle the pronouns and write first-person or third-person to identify the point of view. Have students add one sentence to each story. Check that they use the correct pronouns. ADVANCED Provide copies of the sentences used for Beginning students. Have partners rewrite the first-person example in the third-person and the third-person example in the first-person. If necessary, provide a chart of first- and third-person subject pronouns.

3 Apply

Have students apply the skill in a book at their independent reading levels:

Frankenstein

Read aloud page 5 and ask students to identify if the narrator is telling a first-person or a third-person story. (first-person story) Confirm the responses by asking whom the narrator is talking about (Victor and the Monster) and having students point out the pronouns. (I, me)

The Jacket

Provide Intermediate and Advanced partners with copies of the first paragraph on page 7. Then ask them to circle the pronouns. When they are finished doing this, have them review the pronouns and identify the point of view in the book. (he, third-person story)

CLOSE AND ASSESS

Have students describe a recent event using the first-person. Then have them describe it using the third-person.
