Program Overview This program is designed for experienced coders to gain expertise in hospital-based coding, and to prepare candidates seeking certification through both the American Health Information Association as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). This program is also designed to serve as a refresher course for coders who wish to improve their coding accuracy and efficiency and experienced in hospital coding. Before a student enrolls, it is important that the course instructor speak with the student and provide career counseling. An assessment whether any of our distance learning programs is appropriate will be conducted for a particular student. Potential students may be asked to inquire within their facility education and certification requirements for coders. Many hospitals also require a coder to be AHIMA certified: · · RHIT: Registered Health Information Technician (2 year college degree) RHIA: Registered Health Information Administrator (4 year college degree)

This course is offered to RHIT and RHIA graduates requiring additional training prior to taking the CCS exam. Potential students without an RHIT or RHIA must have advanced anatomy and medical terminology prior to taking this course. This course can be modified to add these courses to be taught simultaneously at an additional cost. Experience Level: This course is designed for medical coders with work experience in either a hospital or physician facility. The course is not intended as an introduction to medical coding. HCCS offers a Professional Outpatient Coding and Billing Course designed for entry level coders. Please contact HCCS for more information. Course Type for experienced coders only! Self-directed, distance learning program. A tutor is assigned to assist you throughout the course.

Overview & Purpose of Distance Learning Attending classes can interfere with job, home and parenting responsibilities. Some courses cannot be found at a traditional college. The program you have chosen is often taught as part of a 2 or 4 year college degree program for Health Information Management professionals. The Society for Strategic Coders recognizes that a college degree and/or certificate in continuing education is not for everyone, yet trained coders are needed in the health care industry. This distance learning program provides an individual instructor to each student to provide guidance, coaching and direction during the training process. But this approach only works with a 100% commitment from the student.

Prioritizing Responsibilities Clearing time in your schedule for study, homework and general course work may cause you to revisit current priorities. Can you make changes by delegating some responsibilities to someone else in the family temporarily (until the program is done)? Can you work on homework at the same time your kids are working on theirs? Are weekends best to get the most time by yourself? Do you have the support and encouragement of your family? If you cannot make time to study 6 to 8 hours per week, then distance learning may not be right for you.
