Connection of ECL to PC There are different ways to connect the ECL Comfort to the PC, depending on the ECL Comfort model and whether the communication cable is to be connected at the front or rear of the ECL Comfort. First the connection possibilities are explained for each model and then the connections are illustrated on some pictures. ECL Comfort 300 connection: ECL Comfort 300 can communicate directly from the front, without installing any option card. To connect at the front, the right front cover must be dismounted with a screwdriver. Under the cover the RS 232 stick is placed, where the communication cable can be connected. Communication from the rear requires an RS 232 option card (ECA81). The connections at the front always have highest priority. ECL Comfort 200 connection: An RS 232 options card (ECA81) is required to communicate with the service software. After installing RS 232 options card it is possible to connect the communication cable in the front or in the rear of the ECL. The connection in the front always has highest priority. 4.1.2

COM-Port Set up The ECL Comfort Service Software is communicating over the serial port of your computer with the ECL Comfort regulator. Therefore you have to set up the serial port of your computer. The next window will ask you to set up the COM-Port of your PC-system (Figure 4). All settings are default. The only thing that has to be changed is perhaps the COM-Port-number. The default value is COM-Port 1. Maybe the mouse or other devices are connected to this port. In this case, connect the ECL Comfort to the COM-Port 2 and select the belonging port-number in the software. 4 Comm.-ports are available in the software. After selecting the right COMPort, select under "File" the setting for "Save and exit". Now the software will open the serial port of your computer. If you only select "Exit" the software will continue with the last selected port. The execution of "Close serial port" will close the COMPort. You can also open this window from the main menu, which is described in Main Menu. This means that you can change the setting while the software is running. This will be necessary, if you want to use the COM-Port with another software while the ECL Comfort Service software is running.

Figure 4: COM-port set up

After this procedure, you are in the main menu of the program. 4.1.3 Main Menu Now you have reached the main part of the software. There are several possibilities you can start from here, for example reading data, writing data, logging data, etc. After a successful set up of the serial port, the ECL Comfort Service Software will check the connection to your ECL Comfort regulator. When the connection is established, the ECL Comfort Service Software reads some information about the ECL Comfort and checks if the software knows the application. If the application is unknown the software will download the application from the ECL Comfort' MMI s list. Reading the MMI list can take up to 3 minutes depending of the application. After downloading the application from ECL Comfort the information is saved in a file and used next time the software recognises this application. You can move on when Figure 5 appears on the screen.

4.1.3.1

The "Setup" menu: "Com Port" The first entry in the "Setup" menu is "Com Port". If you select this menu, you will get the window for the serial port set up (Figure 4). When the software is running, you have already set up your serial port. You can use this menu, when you want to use the serial port with another software without closing the ECL Comfort Service Software. If you change the Comm-port an error will appear, as the software no longer has contact to the ECL Comfort.

4.1.3.2

The "Setup" menu: "ECL info" If you select the entry "ECL info", the software reads the basic information from the ECL Comfort regulator. This could be necessary, when you switch to another application while the software is running. The ECL Comfort Service Software is using this information for the following actions. If you switch the active application of the ECL Comfort regulator while the software is running, you have to update the software by running the "ECL info" entry.

4.1.3.3

The "Setup" menu: "Filename" If you are going to log any data from the ECL Comfort regulator, it is necessary to give the software a file name where these data should be saved. When selecting the entry "Filename", the window below (Figure 6) will appear.

Figure 6: File setup

There are several fields in this window where you can enter information about your measurement. The software gives you a suggestion for a file name. It contains the current date and a number for the number of your measurement.

Page

VI7CN202

Note! Do not use any extension in the file name like "test_01.XXX". The software will give an extension itself. Also do not use any special characters like $ or @ in the file name. You will run the risk of loosing all data in your measurement. The date and time in the following fields are given automatically by the software and cannot be changed. When the data logging function is used a new file name will be placed in \ECL_Comfort\data with the extension log. All other fields are free of choice. You can type in any information you want. It will be saved in the data file. The field remark can be used to note special conditions, for example like the place of measurement, a special set-up or components. You close the window by choosing "File" and "Save and exit". If you want to leave this menu without doing any changes choose "Close". Note! If a file with the selected name already exists, you will get a warning message. In this case, you can replace the file, or you can go back to the "File Setup" window and type in another file name. Files created from the service software: The software will create some files when it is used. The position, extension and contents of these files are listed below. ECL Comfort\APPL: Application information: If the software has seen an application once, application information will be loaded from this file. Download of MMI list is only necessary when the application is unknown to the software. Names are created automatically containing application name and version. ECL Comfort\DATA: *.LOG Data logged from "Read single parameter". *.PAR Information saved from "Create parameter list". *date.LOG Data logging file from the data logging function. *date.CDL Data logging file from "Complete data logging". *.C60 Settings saved in "Complete upload" (Extension = Application). *.HED Header file. 4.1.3.4 The "Setup" menu: "Exit" By choosing the entry "Exit" the program will shut down.

4.1.3.5

The "Operation" menu: "Manuel Control" In manual operation it is possible to read: sensor status, relay status, analogue option card status and relay status. Relay and analogue option card can be set from here.

Figure 7: Manuel control

Sensors: The sensor values are automatically updated. The number of sensors shown is the number of sensors connected in the actual application. Otherwise the field is empty. Relays: The relays can be controlled and monitored. The text ON/OFF is the actual status on the ECL Comfort. The colours of the square frame behind the button indicate request from the user. Green indicates ON request, and red indicates OFF request. Triacs: The triacs can only be controlled. It is not possible to read the actual status of the triacs. Analogue option: This feature can only be used in applications where an analogue option is active. The 2 input voltages can be read, and the 2 output voltages can be set. It is also possible to read the output voltage. This is useful if other devices set the output voltage. Relay option: This feature is only active in an application with relay options. The function is the same as in the standard relays.

4.1.3.6

The "Data logging" menu: "Create parameterlist" Before starting a data logging sequence the parameters to log have to be selected. Parameters to log are selected in the Parameterlist window (Figure 8).

Figure 8: Parameterlist

The parameters are sorted in circuit order, and only active parameters in the application can be selected. If the application has only 1 circuit it is not possible to select any parameters for circuit 2. Removing a single parameter from the list requires that the parameter is selected in the list before "<< Remove" is pressed. The max. number of parameters to select for a data logging is 20. In the field "Parameters" are all the parameters, which have circuit dependencies, placed and in "Favourites parameter" are all the sensors, which have no dependency of circuit. There is also a possibility to save the parameterlist in a file. This gives you the possibility to get the same paramterlist when you are going to use the program another time. Choose "Save current settings" and the settings will be saved with the name already used or a new name if required. The extension is ".txt" . Now you can always reload the routine by choosing "Load routine", when you want to use the software later.

4.1.3.7

The "Data logging" menu: "Start data logging" When "Start data logging" is selected the Scan rate window will appear (Figure 9). Here the period between logging of the chosen parameters is selected. The fastest scan rate possible is always suggested.

Figure 9: Scan rate

The fastest possible scan rate is dependent on the number of parameters in the parameter list. After choosing the scan rate press "OK" and the data logging will start. Pressing "Cancel" cancels the data logging. When the data logging is started you are able to see the incoming data in a table or in a graph. Figure 10 and Figure 11 show the window. In the menu bar you are able to switch between the two views by selecting "setup" and then "Graph" or "Table". If you are looking at the data in the graph mode, you can click the right mouse button and a menu pops up on the screen. Here it is possible to change some of the graph settings e.g. auto scale the graph, or to make a zoom. Try to use it and see what happens. The graph can be scaled in many different ways. It is also possible to change the scale manually if you mark the max. or min. values on the axis and type in a new value. If you want to stop the data logging, choose "Close" and "Stop datalog". It might take up to 30 sec. before the software stops the data logging. This will happen when the software is doing a data log at this moment. The software will terminate, when the current measurement is finished. Data log files: All logged information is saved in the log file with the selected file name, current date and the extension log. If the data logging is running over more than one day a new file is created at the start of a new day. File name TEST creates a log file called: TEST_10_02_99.log on the 10th February 1999. The log files can be used directly in Microsoft Excel, where the logged data can be edited.

The "Data" menu "Read Complete list" From here all settings in the actual application can be read. It is not possible to close this window before all settings are read. The read period is indicated by the green bar, when the bar disappears, the reading is finished. After reading the list, the values can be read by scrolling with the right scrollbar on Figure 14.

Figure 14: Read complete list

In the "Tools" menu the list can be read again with "Read" and the list can be printed on the default printer connected to the PC with "Print". 4.1.3.12 The "Edit database" menu "Full download PC -> ECL" Download of all settings from a file to the ECL Comfort. It is only possible to download files with the application as in the ECL Comfort. The application is written in the extension of the file. This is a slow function, so be patient. 4.1.3.13 The "Edit database" menu "Full upload ECL -> PC" Upload of all settings in the ECL Comfort to a file. This function is similar to the copy function in the ECL Comfort, but the media is different. In the ECL Comfort a card is required for each set of different settings. Here the settings are saved in a file and the number of different settings is unlimited.
