STEP 1 Decide which category or categories you wish to enter. STEP 2 Read the rules and regulations for that category. STEP 3 Read the general rules and regulations. STEP 4 Select your model/s and photographer. STEP 5 Give your photographer - in advance of your photo shoot - the special photographer's rules and regulations located on the checklist at the back of this booklet. STEP 6 Entries must be supplied with a `Before' picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. (with the exception of Avant Garde as for this, you must supply an un-retouched polaroid). There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10" deep x 8" wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification.

handy tiPs

· Write your name, salon name and category on label/s BEFORE sticking to the back of your photographs. Each photograph must be labelled. · Never write directly on the back of your photographs. · Always protect each individual photograph when packaging your entry and do not use paperclips as this can damage the photographs. · Always use a hard backed envelope or box to send your entry. · Do not leave postage or delivery until the last minute.

· Finalists' work in each category will be displayed in the British Hairdressing Awards Gallery at Salon International 2011 15th-17th October, ExCeL, London. · Information regarding successful candidates or winners will not be given out over the phone. · Details of successful entrants will be published in Hairdressers Journal International and on HJi: www.hji.co.uk Award winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on monday 28th November 2011 at Grosvenor House, a JW marriott Hotel, Park Lane, London. · Six finalists will be selected in each category with the exception of British Hairdresser of the Year. · All work submitted for the British Hairdressing Awards must be solely the work of the entrant. · All work is accepted in good faith. Instant disqualification will apply to any candidates found abusing this. · Work submitted for British Hairdresser of the Year, must not have previously been published. Work submitted for all other categories may be published work. · Hairdressers Journal International has the exclusive first option on all British Hairdresser of the Year images. · Hall of Fame awards are only given to those who have won the same award three times. · Hairdressers Journal International retains exclusivity of the Awards' photographs submitted for the British Hairdresser of the Year category until 1st January 2012. · The deadline for entries is final. Entries will NOT be accepted after the stated date and time. Instant disqualification will be enforced. · No employee of Hairdressers Journal International or Schwarzkopf Professional or their families will be allowed to enter or judge the British Hairdressing Awards. · The judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. · Children under the age of 18 years by monday 28th November 2011, may not attend the British Hairdressing Awards presentation evening at Grosvenor House, a JW marriott Hotel. · The dress code for the 28th November will be strictly adhered to. No denim. No trainers. Men will be required to wear a jacket and tie - preferably evening suit and women are required to dress in either cocktail or evening wear. · Anyone seen or found to be taking illegal substances will be removed from the premises. · Entry to the Great Room will be strictly by Great Room ticket ONLY. · Purchasers of Ballroom tickets will NOT be given entry into the Great Room at any time.

what haPPens at the JUdging?

· All photographs are given a number and code for the appropriate category. · All photographs are judged anonymously. · All photographs are displayed by category on boards as seen in a photographic gallery. · Judges are unable to see the names or salon names of the entrants. · Any judge who has an entrant in a category in their employ, or has given advice to any entrant in a category, is not allowed to judge that category. · As each judge completes their judging form for one category, their form is handed to the auditors. · Judges are not allowed to discuss any entries before, during or after the judging. · Once marks are handed into the auditors they cannot be changed. · The whole procedure is supervised and strictly controlled.

· All entrants will be informed as to whether or not they have gained finalist status. · Finalists will be asked to submit a further four photographs, making a collection of eight. · Second round closing date: 5pm, Friday 9th September 2011.

who Can enter?

· All qualified hairdressers who work in the UK in a commercial environment and have done so for a minimum of three years excluding training may enter this category. · Entrants must have a regular client column within the region entered. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked. You can only enter one salon in one region in any one year.

how to enter

· Submit four photographs created by you during the past 12 months. From 25th June 2010 - 24th June 2011. · Entries must be supplied with a `Before' picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10" deep x 8" wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification. · The organisers and judges reserve the right to question any photographs, which appear to be computer enhanced. · The overall size of the photograph must be 10" deep x 8" wide (portrait) un-mounted. The size includes any borders. Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. Please do not use paper clips when submitting your entry as this can damage the photographs. · Should you go through to the second round, you will need to supply a further four photographs, with `Before' shots. These will create a collection of eight photographs.

· No more than three pictures in the collection of eight can contain wigs/extensions/ hairpieces or strands. You can use a maximum of two wigs in total, in a maximum of two pictures - but extensions, hairpieces and strands can be used in up to three pictures. Please bear in mind that should you get through to the second round you will be asked to supply a further four photographs and you will need to ensure that you have only used a maximum of two wigs and extensions, hairpieces or strands in a total of three pictures in the overall collection of eight photographs. This will be checked. If used, you must declare which pictures contain the wigs/hairpieces/extensions/strands by labelling the back of the pictures with the words `wig' or `extension/hairpiece/strand'. Failure to do so will result in disqualification. · No more than two faces may appear in any one photograph. · Photographs may be black and white or colour and the hair should be commercial, wearable and reflect current trends. · Professional photographers, make-up artists and stylists may be used. · Images do not have to be head and shoulders, but they do need to focus on the hair, especially in terms of lighting and pose.

A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked.

· All qualified hairdressers who work in the UK in a commercial environment and have done so for a minimum of three years excluding training may enter this category. · Entrants must have a regular client column. A regular client column is working in a salon for a minimum of one day per week. This may be checked. · Only Schwarzkopf Professional colour can be used in this category. · the use of wigs, hairpieces, extensions or strands is strictly forbidden.

entrants mUst sUPPLy

· Four 10" x 8" (portrait) full colour photographs, of four different model's hair before colouring. · Four 10" x 8" (portrait) full colour photographs of the same model's hair after colouring. · All photographs must be created by you during the past 12 months. From 25th June 2010 - 24th June 2011. · For each look, a technical analysis of the model's hair must be submitted outlining: texture, porosity, pre-colour applications and other relevant information which should include: ­ A breakdown of the colour products/shades used and the reasons why they were appropriate for the hair type and result. ­ An insight into shade selection and the reasons for their usage. e.g. eye colour, skin tone, texture enhancement. ­ A comprehensive outline of the techniques used including terms such as foils, mesh, slicing, colour merging, bleeding panels, under/over development, pre-lightening, pastel shading and shade variation. ­ A storyline of the concept behind the finished result and how the colour and technique enhanced the look. · the before and after photographs, together with the detailed explanations for each shot should be supplied in an A4 binder. As the photographs will be removed from the folders for judging can you please ensure that you label each `before' photograph and `after' photograph and corresponding piece of technical information with a number so that they can be clearly identified during the judging. (Please do not glue your photographs into the folder as they will need to be removed for judging.) · Photographs can be supplied on photographic paper purchased through a photographer or photographic outlet. If any of the above rules are not followed, your entry may be returned.

· This category is by nomination only. If nominated you will be informed by the end of June 2011 and you will be asked to submit a portfolio of eight exclusive photographs and a completed CV. · Entries must be supplied with a `Before' picture of each model taken on the day of the shoot prior to any hair work, make-up or styling. There is no set size for the before shots but they should be no larger than 10" deep x 8" wide. Failure to provide these may result in disqualification. · The organisers reserve the right to question any photographs, which appear to be computer enhanced. · A standard CV form will be supplied. No attachments are allowed. · The CV should include international trade shows (education) with audience figures. · An ambassadorial mission statement of no more than 200 words. · TV Coverage - detailing what, where, channel etc. · Press coverage including UK trade, UK consumer, overseas trade, overseas consumer titles. · A press book must also be supplied with the CV which can be checked to ensure claims made are true. It must contain all coverage as stated in the CV. · The CV must not contain any reference which could identify the nominee or their salon. · The portfolio of work submitted for British Hairdresser of the Year must be exclusive and must not have been seen by the media or other hairdressers prior to Tuesday 4th October 2011. This includes uploading onto any social networking sites, e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc. · The portfolio of work must not be published prior to 1st January 2012. · Hairdressers Journal International has the exclusive first option on all British photographs. · British nominees must be at the Grosvenor House from 11am on Monday 28th November 2011.
