Background on Gordon McKie

Gordon McKie is a graduate of Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland. His earlier career included various appointments within the banking, distribution and manufacturing sectors. In 1993, he became Group Managing Director of a major contract electronics manufacturing business owned by Sir David Murray, one of Scotland's largest private companies and owner of Glasgow Rangers FC. McKie oversaw a transformation in the running of the business and increased profits enabled its sale a major competitor. Subsequently, McKie became Group Chief Executive of a private equity backed business involved in the refurbishment and remarketing of surplus electronic products. Gordon lead managed a refinancing and restructuring of the business, leading to its sale to a major French conglomerate. In 2002, the Bank of Scotland influenced the appointment of McKie as Chief Executive of a loss making mechanical and electrical contracting business. During the subsequent 3 years, the losses were significantly reduced but the planned merger of the business with a construction company fell through, and an inevitable insolvency then occurred. In 2005, and following an extensive recruitment search process, the Bank of Scotland introduced Gordon McKie to Scottish Rugby, the national governing body for rugby in Scotland, and owner of three professional rugby teams. McKie was thereafter appointed Chief Executive in August 2005, at a time when the organisation was in financial freefall with bank borrowings that were out of control and the global standing of the National Team was at an all time low. During Gordon McKie's six year tenure with Scottish Rugby, the business was transformed with significant improvements in playing numbers and performances on the field. A full Strategic Planning exercise was successfully undertaken which led to number of significant new commercial agreements being concluded. Thereafter, the business increased revenues and improved its reputation with key stakeholders including the Scottish Government, partner organisations and sponsors. Gordon McKie resigned his position in June 2011 to identify and pursue a fresh challenge. At the time of his resignation, Allan Munro, Chairman of Scottish Rugby said:'' Gordon has provided great leadership, accountability, stability and transformed Scottish Rugby in the past six years'' ENDS.
