2010-2011 l HOOVER VIKINGS BASKETBALL

Welcome

Welcome to Hoover Basketball 2010-2011. Let's get "Back to Business" We hope you're as excited about the upcoming season as the Vikings are. Last year Hoover High School joined the list of Ohio high schools whose basketball programs have won 1,000 games in their history. That list is less than 50 schools long. This, however, is a new season! Hoover fans have become accustomed to the .813 winning percentage produced by Coach Randy Montgomery's first seven squads. Where basketball is a priority, expectations are high. This year's team is making the transition from last season's senior-laden group to one that will lean more heavily on contributions from newcomers and underclassmen to share the load with senior Nyles Evans. How well and how soon those newcomers step up will determine what kind of a mark this year's team leaves on the program. Consistent success has never come easily, and it will never be taken for granted. It has always been the by-product of hard work... hard work that does not begin in late November or early December, but rather begins ever so shortly after the conclusion of the previous year. These players have worked hard, both on their individual games and as a team. They are excited for this season and Viking fans should be too. The 2010-2011 Vikings return three senior players, 6'4" Kyle Arnold, 6' Nyles Evans, and 6'1" Chad Feinberg , as well as senior manager Lucas Rife. A fourth senior player, 6'2" Brandon Crues, returns from a one-year hiatus. Evans brings by far the most significant experience, but he has plenty as a 4th-year starter and an all-state player who ranks 11th on the Hoover all-time scoring list as the season begins. Feinberg saw plenty of action in the backcourt as well, and the Vikes need Chad to play well for them to succeed. Kyle Arnold will have to anchor the front court, but he has grown up enough as a player to be up to the task. Crues adds energy and a knack for finding rebounds and loose balls. Lucas Rife is an invaluable asset to the team and the coaches, and he returns for his fourth season as team manager. Juniors Michael Ducey (5'7"), Nick Fausnight (5'10"), Phil Marcantonio (6'4"), Tyler Veldhuizen (6'3"), and Skyler Correll (6') also return. None logged significant minutes last season, and both Fausnight and Veldhuizen have had injury issues in the preseason. Marcantonio and Correll add braun inside, while Ducey is a back court contributor. Taylor Moore is a 6'6" junior newcomer. These young men will play their respective ways into or out of the rotation by their performances. Also on the varsity are sophomores Dom Iero (5'10"), Tyler Maciag (6'), Harrison Blackledge (6'3"), and Max Erb (6'5"). Iero saw limited varsity action last season as a freshmen. He and Maciag are back court players and shooters, while Blackledge and Erb will contribute in the front court. The high school coaching staff returns unchanged, with Troy Clark once again serving as Coach Montgomery's varsity assistant and Jim York returning as head JV coach. Terry Cook, who has helped Coach Montgomery for over 20 years, returns in the somewhat administrative role overseeing scouting and logistics that he had last season. Todd Blackledge is the head coach of the Freshmen team again, and he is still assisted by Paul Eriksen.

coach Randy montgomeRy

Coach Randy Montgomery's program at Hoover is recognized as one of the most respected in the state. The Vikings schedule traditional powerhouses, a point to which last year's trip to Cincinnati and this year's return visit by St. Xavier will attest. Coach Montgomery is constructing a program, not just coaching a team. He is well on his way to doing just that here at Hoover. Not just at the high school, where his current players attend, but throughout the entire North Canton community. Seniors graduate, and talent ebbs and flows from class to class. But work ethic, tradition, and pride are characteristics that overcome the disparity in talent from one group of Vikings to the next. Pride not only in what you do on the court, but in what you do off the court as well. Pride not only in the results, but in how you go about achieving those results. Pride in being a Hoover Viking basketball player, which draws the next generation of youngsters to become Viking roundballers as well. In eight seasons since his hiring, Montgomery's Vikings have elevated the stature of North Canton Hoover basketball, receiving attention from the entire state. Their performance has born out the truth of the "Since 2002 A New Tradition" t-shirts that accompanied his arrival. The Vikings have won 148 of 182 games over that period, including 80 of 86 games at home. Hoover finished 2003 with a 21-2 record, good enough for the school's first Federal League basketball title since 1985, and just the fourth in school history. Montgomery followed up that performance with an even better one in 2004, leading the Vikings to a perfect 20-0 regular season, a first for the program, and the school's first-ever AP Poll State Championship. The Vikings finished 21-1 and again took Federal League honors, Hoover's first-ever back-to-back Federal League basketball championships. The 2005 team finished the regular season at 18-2, ranked seventh in Ohio in the final AP poll, and wrapped up the season at 19-3. The 05-06 team, with five first-year starters, still finished 13-8. The following season's team finished at 18-4. The 2007-08 team won 16 of their 23 games as well. The 2008-09 squad's 21-4 mark included yet another Federal League championship, along with the first District title of Montgomery's tenure. Last year's squad finished 19-5. Montgomery became the winningest basketball coach in Hoover history during the 2008-09 campaign. His teams' 148-34 record in his first eight seasons is the best eight-year winning percentage (.813) at Hoover since 1943. In addition, the Vikings enter the 2010-2011 season with an 80-6 mark at home during Montgomery's first eight campaigns. Of course, numbers like these seemed less mind-boggling and almost commonplace during Montgomery's 19-year stay at Triway High School. His Titan teams averaged exactly 18 wins and 5 losses per season for those 19 seasons, adding up to an impressive 342-95 record. His teams won 12 league titles in a row, five district crowns, two AP Poll Championships, and made a pair of state final four appearances in 1988 and 1991. Prior to beginning his own head coaching career, Montgomery spent three seasons as an assistant to current West Virginia University head coach Bob Huggins at Walsh University in North Canton. He and Huggins helped coach Walsh to the NAIA title game in 1983. Montgomery's coaching career began in 1978 as the freshmen coach at Springfield Local High School. He spent two years in that role before moving on to Walsh. In 27 years as a varsity head coach, Montgomery has had just one losing season, compiling a 490129 record and a stellar .792 winning percentage. Coach Montgomery reached the 400-win milestone during the 2004-2005 season, putting him in select company among some of Ohio's best basketball coaches. The 500-win mark seems likely reachable during this 2010-2011 season. Coach Montgomery and his wife, Becky (a guidance counselor at Greentown Elementary), currently reside in North Canton. They have three daughters: Annie (23, a teacher at Clearmount Elementary), Erin (20, a cosmetologist and recent Malone University enrollee), and Leigh (18, featured later in this publication).

Win tunnel

VIKINGS 80-6 IN THE "WIN TUNNEL" A VERY TOUGH PLACE TO VISIT!

North Canton Hoover High School boasts some of the finest facilities in Ohio for both academics and athletics, and the home of Viking basketball is certainly no exception. The "Win Tunnel," as Coach Montgomery dubbed the Hoover gymnasium upon his arrival prior to the 2002-03 season, is entering its fourteenth full season of action after opening its doors for basketball in January of 1997. Constructed in 1996, the gymnasium has a capacity of 2,188. Most of those seats have been full on many winter nights over the past seven seasons, as the Vikings have posted a 134-26 regular season record during that span. Under Montgomery and entering the 2010-11 season, the Vikings have lost only six games in the "Win Tunnel." The first was to Canton McKinley, the eventual state champion, four years ago. Two home losses occurred durint the 2007-08 season, to Michigan power Detroit Country day in the Pizza Oven Classic and to Lake. The fourth home loss was to Jackson in 2008-09, which thankfully was answered with two subsequent defeats of the Polar Bears. Losses 5 and 6 were sustained last season, to McKinley and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. The Vikes were 11-0 at home during the 2002-03 season, 10-0 in 2003-04, 12-0 in 200405, 10-1 in 2005-06, 11-0 in 2006-07, 9-2 in 2007-08, 9-1 in 2008-09, and 8-2 last year. That's 80-6! Our Vikings have taken on all comers at home. Such notable non-league visitors as Akron Buchtel, Barberton, Cincinnati Western Hills, Cleveland Benedictine, Cleveland St. Ignatius, Detroit Country Day, Farrell, PA, and Massillon have been vanquished in the "Win Tunnel" - as well all Federal League opponents, including Canton McKinley once in 2003-04 and twice in 2007-08. It stands to reason, then, that visiting opponents are very wary of an away game at Hoover. Their fans love the comforts our facility affords. Their teams love the well-appointed locker rooms and the way they are treated off the floor. On the court, however, is where our Vikings remind them whose House this is and whose it is not!

tRacking the Win tunnel tRadition

In the confines of the inner sanctum of the Win Tunnel is a very tangible reminder to the current group of players that Viking Pride pre-dates, and is bigger than them. A symbolic well has been constructed by Steve Burgess, a friend of the coaching staff. It currently resides in the team lockerroom. The well reflects the Vikings' all-time record in the Win Tunnel since it was so dubbed. The record stands at 80-6 as the season opens on 2010-2011; that record will be changed, either to the better or to the worse, after each home game played. On the well is an admonition, "Drink The Water, But Remember Who Dug The Well!"

TIP-OFF DINNER

LARRY JOHNSON HEADLINES THE 9TH ANNUAL HOOVER HOOPS TIP-OFF DINNER!

A crowd of 200 Viking enthusiasts gathered at Skyland Pines Banquet Center on Friday, November 12, to enjoy one another's company and to support the Hoover boys basketball program. The 9th Annual Tip-Off Dinner featured a silent auction, a 12-item live auction, and a 10-item prize giveaway. The evening was capped off with the awarding of an all-inclusive 4-day, 3-night trip for two to Las Vegas. The trip included airfare, hotel accommodations, tickets to a Vegas show, and dinner for two. Jim and Melanie Nicholson, pictured here, were the grand prize winners! Auctioned items included an autographed LeBron James Olympic jersey, a Bridgestone golf tournament Pin Flag autographed by the PGA players, an autographed WVU ball with Jerry West, Hot Rod Hundley, and Bob Huggins signatures, an autographed Sam Snead photograph, prime Cleveland Cavs tickets to two separate games, and a golf package featuring rounds at four area country clubs including Firestone. Also auctioned were a football signed by Bernie Kosar, Pittsburgh Penguins tickets, and a front quarter of beef, among other things. This year's guest speaker was Larry Johnson, the former UNLV All-American and NCAA Player of the Year, turned NBA All-Star and "Grandmama" Converse pitchman. Larry hosted a VIP "meet & greet" reception before the Friday night dinner. Mr. Johnson's speech at the Tip-Off dinner was both honest and entertaining. He included some colorful stories from his playing past, which entertained the evening's crowd. Mr. Johnson joins a list of previous Tip-Off Dinner speakers that includes local hero and past NBA player Dick Snyder, now World Champion major league manager Charlie Manuel, Cy Young award winner Dean Chance, the late Ohio State and Boston Celtic star Larry Siegfried, former Cav Larry Nance, NCCS Superintendent Mike Gallina, coaching legend Ron Blackledge, former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, and former Notre Dame and Cleveland Cav great Austin Carr. Hoover Hoops would like to thank all those who made the event a success, both experientially and financially. That would include Larry Johnson of course, Mike Toney (who has put us in touch with our past two speakers), the contributors of the auction items, the many Hoover Hoops volunteers, the crowd of enthusiasts who came out to support the Viking team, and especially Terry's Tire Town, whose support made bringing in Mr. Johnson possible. Make a point of attending next year's event!

hooVeR hooPS awardS SCHolarSHIPS

Each year the Hoover Hoops Boys Basketball Boosters awards $500 scholarships to graduating players who are enrolling in full-time collegiate studies. It is the intent of the club that each graduating player who is continuing his education receive at minimum a scholarship of that size from either Hoover Hoops or the Perry Rotary, which awards one Hoover senior $500 for our participation in their annual Preview. Cory Veldhuizen was the recipient of last year's Perry Rotary scholarship. The booster club awards its aid via two distinct scholarship names. The Jerry Csulik Memorial Scholarship is in memory of the late Jerry Csulik, a former Hoover Hoops officer and the father of two past Hoover basketball players, one male and one female. Mr. Csulik was killed in an automobile accident, and each year since his death the scholarship has been awarded. Hoover Hoops' bylaws mandate that "at least one" scholarship be underwritten each year, but in 2006-07 two were awarded to Joe Ryser and Nathan Sommers. In 2007-08 the Csulik Scholarship was awarded to R.J Vukovich. In 2008-09 Joe Cerreta received the scholarship. Last year's winners were AJ Sarbaugh and Tyler Fausnight. The Csulik family is still active in helping to fund the scholarship by way of their participation in the yearly Hoover Hoops TipOff Dinner fundraiser through contributions of sports memorabilia auction items. Each year the annual basketball Classic sponsored by Hoover Hoops underwrites scholarships from proceeds of the event. In 2006-07 three such Pizza Oven Classic scholarships were awarded, to N'Gai Evans, Matt Levitt, and Trent Schooley. In 2007-08 Matt Wakulchik received a Pizza Oven Classic scholarship. In 2008-09 both Greg Beck and Jerod Lane received the scholarships. Last year, the first that Mercy Medical Center sponsored the event, Dan Daugherty and Jimmy Wackerly were the scholarship recipients. Hoover Hoops thanks past sponsor Pizza Oven Restaurants, current sponsor Mercy Medical Center, and Classic co-chairs Gene DeChellis and Greg Duplin, for making these scholarships possible.

Leigh Genevieve Montgomery is the eighteen year old daughter of Coach Randy and Becky Montgomery. "Leigh Leigh" is multipally handicapped, but that hasn't stopped her from attending almost every game her dad has coached during her lifetime. She loves her center court, front row seat in the Hoover "Win Tunnel", and she wears her orange & black attire with pride! Leigh is the happiest fan in the gym, and win or lose, she keeps smiling and LOVES the Vikings! From the looks of her attire in this photo, Leigh may let the officials know they're being watched.

2011-12 SEASON BASKETBALL TICKET INFORMATION

Are you ever envious of the folks in line ahead of you? "What line?" you ask. The line for Viking basketball tickets when our allotment of tickets for a small away venue is not sufficient. Or when it's tournament time! Having Hoover basketball season tickets is having a spot at the front of the line. Or it's having an insurance policy for those occasions when all the really good seats are taken or when you're pressed for time and arriving right at tip-off. If you are a current season ticket holder, you will automatically receive information regarding your tickets in the mail by late May. Please be certain that the Athletic Office (497-5660) has your current address and follow the instructions in the letter that you receive. You will have until the first week of June to purchase your tickets. AFTER THE DEADLINE, ALL UNSOLD TICKETS GO ON SALE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. NO TICKETS WILL BE HELD. If you are interested in obtaining season tickets for the first time in 2011-12, they are available on a first-come, firstserved basis for one week after the aforementioned renewal deadline at the Athletic Office ticket window (Door #8, Seventh Street entrance). Ticket window hours are 7:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. If there are any remaining tickets, they will be offered during a one-week window in late November 2011. Thank you for your support.

2010-2011 l HOOVER VIKINGS BASKETBALL

Dear Fans: We welcome you to North Canton Hoover High School and to our athletic event. We hope that this athletic event will provide enjoyment for you. However, we also hope that this event illustrates the most important element in any athletic contest outstanding sportsmanship. We want to establish a cooperative partnership with all schools to promote this value. Good sportsmanship includes those qualities of behavior that are characterized by respect, generosity, and a genuine concern for others. It is a clear measure of the understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior, and integrity. These values are not only vital to athletics, but they also play an integral role in the total educational experience we wish to create for all. We ask that coaches, athletes, and spectators always be conscious of our excellent tradition and do whatever necessary to promote sportsmanship. We remind students that the student conduct codes are in effect at all school-sponsored activities. Listed below are guidelines that we expect our athletes, coaches, students, and spectators to follow. We appreciate your continued support in promoting sportsmanship at this and all interscholastic events. Sincerely,

Don Shimek

Don Shimek, AD North Canton Hoover

Behavior Expectations

THE STUDENT ATHLETE:

1. Accept and understand the seriousness of your responsibility and the privilege of representing the school and the community. Learn the rules of the game thoroughly and discuss them with parents, fans, fellow students, and elementary students. This will assist them and you in the achievement of a better understanding and appreciation of the game. Treat opponents the way you would like to be treated, as a guest or friend. Wish opponents good luck before the game and congratulate them in a sincere manner following either victory or defeat. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Never argue or make non-verbal gestures that indicate disagreement. This type of immature activity may incite undesirable behavior in the stands and by teammates. 5. 6. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Do not question an official's call. Refrain from cheers which downplay the opponent or which use profane or abusive language.

2.

SPECTATORS:

1. Remember that school athletics are learning experiences for students and that mistakes will be made. You will not jeer a student who makes a mistake in the classroom; why is an athlete an exception? A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally assault others and be generally obnoxious. Learn the rules of the game so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place. Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators, and support groups. Treat them as you would a guest in your own home. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team. Refrain from the use of any controlled substances (alcohol, drugs, etc.) before and during games and afterwards on or near the site of the event (i.e. tailgating). Refrain from cheers which downplay the opponent or which use profane or abusive language.

OTHER STUDENT GROUPS (CHEERLEADERS, PEP CLUBS, BAND):

1. Establish themselves as leaders in your conduct before, during, and after contests and events. Always provide positive support. Assist cheerleaders with yells, chants, etc., and be a working part of pep assemblies with preparation, organization, and involvement. Treat opposing players, coaches, spectators, and support groups with respect and enthusiasm. Conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. Remember, you represent your school both home and away.
