Training Strategies for Orientation

Introductions/Icebreakers

As you do introductions, ask staff to respond to questions that would generate enthusiasm and insights about themselves and Ohio State. You can also have participants interview and introduce each other using the questions. Below are some sample questions: § § § § § What was your first impression of Ohio State? What is the name and role of one person in your office? Who is the person who has worked the longest in your office? What is one historical fact about your building? What is one component of your new job that you think is great?

Activities

There are many ways to get participants actively involved in learning about the university trivia games and quizzes are two great ways to introduce facts about campus or your department. § § § § § § Develop a brief list of questions participants need to get answers for and bring to orientation it could be a mixture of fun and important facts. Have each person work with a partner to answer questions you have developed. Divide the group into two teams. Have each team develop questions based on orientation materials and challenge the other team. Ask the group for "burning questions" about the department or college. Give a fun quiz. This could be a team building exercise. Give prizes for the high scores. Develop a list of trivia questions that can be answered by researching the orientation packet individually or in pairs. Check answers together and give prizes

The following are some sample questions you can use for a trivia game or quiz:

§ § § § § § § § § §

Name two "hidden" benefits Name two resources for professional development on campus Present two fun facts about your department or staff Present two historical facts about your department Describe one component of your job that you really enjoy or value Name two benefits you receive as an Ohio State employee Name two Ohio State acronyms (such as OHRD or OIT) and explain what they mean Describe your customers Give two examples of how you provide excellent customer service to your customers Describe how the Ohio State mission statement relates to you and your job

Remember that these are only suggestions for questions. Your own college/department/unit is rich with resources. Organization and Human Resource Development is available to consult with you and assist with the development of your orientation program.
