A Message from Our Principal

Dear Parents and Students of HMS, I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful fall weather we've had lately! These last few days have been so nice after all the rain we've experienced. But I know that we'll soon enough be facing some cold mornings, and I want to remind parents that students should not be dropped off before 7:30. They will not be allowed inside until that time, and it can and does often get cold at that time of morning. Hopefully they will be dressed for that weather. We had a very nice Veteran's Day assembly program on Tuesday, November 10th and recognized about 20 veterans who have connections with students or teachers at HMS. I want to give special thanks to Pat Miller, 8th grade social studies teacher, for coordinating this event, and to our Student Council membersJonathon Prozan, Kurt DeLay, Ronnie Eady, Anna Katherine Brooks, and Parker Landwehr, the HMS choir and band, and 7th grade students Hope Strickland and John Collin Powell for their contributions to this wonderful program. And it was made all the more special due to our own, Coach Bob Weakley, who was our guest speaker. I hope that you all will attend our next PTA meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17th. I will be presenting some information about test results from last spring. In addition, our speaker will provide some useful information about the internet and how we all can be more aware of how students interact and communicate in this age of technological advances.

Things You Need to Know: Common Pain Relievers Impact Flu Shot Effectiveness

With flu vaccination season in full swing, research from the University of Rochester Medical Center cautions that use of many common pain killers Advil, Tylenol, aspirin at the time of injection may blunt the effect of the shot and have a negative effect on the immune system. Richard P. Phipps, Ph.D., professor of Environmental Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, and of Pediatrics, has been studying this issue for years and recently presented his latest findings to an international conference on inflammatory diseases. (http://bioactivelipidsconf.wayne.edu/) "What we've been saying all along, and continue to stress, is that it's probably not a good idea to take common, over-the-counter pain relievers for minor discomfort associated with vaccination," Phipps said. "We have studied this question using virus particles, live virus, and different kinds of pain relievers, in human blood samples and in mice -- and all of our research shows that pain relievers interfere with the effect of the vaccine." A study by researchers in the Czech Republic reported similar findings in the Oct. 17, 2009, edition of The Lancet. They found that giving acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, to infants weakens the immune response to vaccines. Phipps' research has tested whether production of antibodies using a cell culture system was blunted by over-the-counter pain relievers. He found that a variety of pain relievers even though Tylenol and Advil have different ingredients -- seemed to dilute the production of necessary antibodies to protect against illness.

Congratulations Cheerleaders!

Congratulations to the cheerleaders for winning 3rd place at the North Alabama Regional Cheer Competition. They also received a bid to compete in the UCA National Cheer competition held in Orlando in February.

Student Council Calls for Christmas Charities Donations

Join Us for a Thanksgiving Celebration Meal on November 19th!

You can email her or let your child be responsible to let the teacher know. For participation confirmation for either initiative, teacher email addresses can be accessed on our school website, at http://www.hsv.k12.al.us/schools/middle/hms/faculty.htm
