In most cases the relationship with the manufacturer ends at the time of sale. In the case of Hydro-Temp the relationship begins at the time of sale. What can a Make-Up Air unit do for you?

In today's more health conscious society, greater attention is being paid to indoor air quality than ever before. Unlike outdoor air, indoor air is recycled again and again which causes it to trap and build up pollutants. Over the past several decades indoor air pollution has become a greater problem due to the drive for more tightly sealed buildings in an effort to increase heating and cooling efficiency. More and more government entities from federal down to local municipalities are requiring that new and retrofit HVAC installations have some method of introducing fresh air into a space in order to prevent build up of carbon dioxide levels and other unwanted contaminants and V.O.C.'s. One way to increase fresh air circulation is to leave a window open, but this makes it difficult to control the temperature in the room or building. Hydro-Temp's solution is the Make-Up Air unit. This unit draws in fresh air from outside and conditions it before introducing it into the occupied spaces. There are several levels available in this type of equipment. In its simplest form, the make up air unit will pull in air from the outside heat or cool the air before introducing it directly into the occupied spaces. The next step would be to add "reheat" to the unit. Warm air is brought into the unit, dehumidified, and reheated to a comfortable level before introducing it into the occupied space. The ultimate in efficiency for the make up air unit is to collect all that already conditioned exhaust air and use the temperature difference between that exhaust air and the incoming air to precondition the incoming air by passing both streams of air through a heat exchanger. The exhaust air gives up its temperature to the incoming air making the task of conditioning the incoming air that much easier. The incoming air is then passed through the rest of the cycle as needed before being introduced into the conditioned spaces. Hydro-Temp's microprocessor controls can be customized to the customer's needs, sampling temperatures and humidity levels at numerous points in the cycle, adjusting the operation of the unit for the most energy efficient use of the various components in the system. There are several variations on this type of unit, from partial heat exchange where a portion of the return air to the unit is exhausted all or part of the time, to 100% outside air where all air entering the unit from inside space is exhausted and replaced with conditioned outside air.

How it Works

In the cooling mode air is brought in from outside, cooled and there by dehumidified. If the unit is equipped with reheat, the incoming air is warmed to a neutral temperature (adjustable) and introduced into the space. To accomplish reheat a second air coil is placed in parallel with the water coil. As reheat is required a portion of the hot refrigerant is diverted away from the water coil (condenser is this mode) and sent to the second air coil allow it to warm up the dehumidified air. This modulation of refrigerant is controlled by stepper motor modulating valve which allow the required percentage of refrigerant to be diverted to where it is needed.

Cooling Mode Refrigeration Circuit By adding a reversing valve to the system, the make-up air unit can heat as well. Fresh air can be warmed before being introduced into the space. With the refrigeration circuit shown the air can be re-cooled (if desired) to continue to introduce "neutral" air into the space. In most cases, however, the air is introduced as warm as possible to help reduce the heating requires of the space conditioning equipment. In the heating mode it is important to maintain the entering air coming to the unit above 45 degrees. This is accomplished by resistance heat or by using the most preferred method of reheat recovery using a plate type air to air heat exchanger or a heat recovery wheel.

The following illustrations show the use of a plate type air to air heat exchanger in the partial and full make-up air modes. Units can be customized to meet air flow, control strategies, cabinet orientations or any specific needs for the particular installation.

Controls

The programmable controller used in the make-up air equipment is compatible with most building automation systems. The controller can communicate with the following communication protocols; BACnet® · LonWorks · Modbus · N2. Programming is custom written, factory tested and is based on proven algorithms. Each job comes with a hand held plug-in panel to monitor the status of the equipment, change set-points and do unit diagnostics. We will work with you to give you the best control solution.

General Specifications For Make Up-Air Units

CABINET: Cabinets will be built of quality materials, appropriate for the setting into which the unit will be installed. The cabinet design will be optimized for installation and service. Outdoor cabinets are typically salt spray rated 2" double wall construction with an extruded aluminum frame and indoor units are similar construction with 1" thick multi-density sound absorbing insulation. DRAINPAN: One piece sloped and welded stainless steel. REFRIGERATION CIRCUIT: Typical refrigeration circuits include a reversing valve, electronic stepper motor expansion valve, electronic stepper motor modulating hot gas reheat valves and high/low side access valves. COMPRESSOR: Typical refrigeration circuits include parallel hermetically sealed compressors (scroll, reciprocating or screw). A parallel compressor installation refers to a system of compressors interconnected and working together. Though parallel installation has several benefits, the primary reason is reduced operating cost through greater control of capacity and power consumption. This is achieved by staggering compressor switch-on sequences that allow the parallel system to match its power with the capacity needed. The compressors are equipped with overload protection and are mounted on rubber vibration insulators. HEAT EXCHANGERS: Stainless steel brazed plate with brazed fittings. Includes cabinet mounted 18 mesh strainer. AIR COIL: Heatcraft ARI certified, seamless copper filled tube with aluminum lanced fins and aluminum end plates. BLOWER: Delhi Industries centrifugal blower with forward curved galvanized wheel and enamel finish frame. BLOWER MOTOR: Baldor motors rated for continuous operation. Blower motors controlled by Cutler-Hammer adjustable frequency drive which includes electronic motor overload protection circuits that ar designed to meet the requirements of NEC Article 430-2. CONTROLS: Automated Logic Controls, BACnet compatible custom programmable highspeed 16 bit processor with 1 mb flash memory and 1 mb of battery backed ram. ELECTRICAL: Can be configured with built in disconnect, dual point power connection. All internal components are separately fused. OPTIONS AND ACCESSORIES: Corrosion resistant heat exchanger Cleanable electrostatic filters UVC Antibacterial light CO2 Sensors
