Rhône-Poulenc implements a purified Phosphoric Acid process at Geismar, LA plant.

INNOVALTTM T ­ Emulsifying Agent

INNOVALTTM T is a new environmentally friendly surfactant for asphalt emulsion formulations (patent pending).

Ceramics

Phosphoric acid and phosphate salts are used in a wide variety of ceramic and glass products. Applications include the manufacture of refractories, specialty glasses and ceramic colored pigments. Functionally, phosphates provide bonding properties to ceramic composition, are dispersing agents to kaolin slurries and provide flux and compositional adjustments to heat absorbing, colored, semi-conducting and laser glasses. Used in the production of ceramic colors. Used in the manufacture of chemically bonded fire-brick for high and low temperature furnace applications.

Drilling Muds

Drilling muds are an important component in oil, mineral and water well drilling. These muds have several functions including removal and dispersion of the cuttings, cooling of the bit, lubrication and support of the walls. Innophos provides a variety of phosphate salts that aid in several of these critical processes. Sodium Hexametaphosphate

Used as a dispersant.

Cements

Sodium tripolyphosphate is used in "wet process" cements sold in powdered form to aid in their dispersion when mixing them with water to form a slurry. Use of a polyphosphate results in a more uniform, easier to pump slurry, which may be achieved using less water and offers the additional benefits of reduced drying time and lower labor and handling costs. Used as an additive in quick-setting cement.

Asphalt

The simple addition of small amounts of INNOVALTTM asphalt modifiers enhances the performance of asphalt for more durable, longer lasting pavement. INNOVALTTM is also ideal for paving, asphalt roofing, sealing and coating applications. INNOVALTTM asphalt modifiers are effective, safe, and economical.

Use INNOVALTTM N in the asphalt binder at a rate of 0.5 to 1.5% wt of asphalt binder, to increase the Performance grade (PG) or Penetration grade (Pene) of the binder by one or more grades.

Used in the production of fast-setting cements.

INNOVALTTM E ­ Polymer Modified Asphalt

INNOVALTTM E gives very high cohesion and elasticity to the asphalt binder, while providing reduced viscosity compared to polymer only modified binders.

Clay

When processing clay, manufacturers can benefit from the use of phosphates. They provide dispersant benefits and are effective deflocculants in kaolin mining. Phosphoric Acid

Used as a refractory binding agent.

Used in the formation of insulating coating on electrical steel for transformer cores.

Metal Finishing

Innophos offers solutions which meet many aspects of metal finishing. They provide corrosion resistance which can often be obtained by plating. A specialized application experiencing tremendous growth is electrolytic plating with copper pyrophosphate bath: this bath is used for the plating of electronic circuit boards. Phosphate products are an integral part of the chemical polishing of metal, commonly known as "bright dipping" which gives polished aluminum its mirror-like finish. Phosphates are also critical to the production of metal cleaners and are used to cleanse metal prior to treatment. Disodium Phosphate

Used in the production of alkaline metal cleaners.

Mining

Sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate have been shown to improve the efficiency of copper recovery from copper ore. The use of these products as deflocculants in the copper grinding and separation stages helps to achieve a finer grind of the solids, which in turn helps increase the efficiency and lower the costs of the recovery process. Finds use as a deflocculant and sequestrant.

Flame Retardants

An important element in flame retardants is ammonium phosphates. Innophos provides both diammonium and monoammonium phosphates for this market. Our high quality ammonium phosphates find use in flame proofing cotton, paper and wood (cellulosic materials) based on their ability to slow down the degeneration of such materials into flammable, volatile materials when heat is applied. Monoammonium Phosphate

Used as a flame retardant for fabrics, cotton battings, wood, specialty paper and fabrics. Used in fire extinguishers.

Horticulture

Specialty Phosphates are widely used in commercial grade horticultural products both as manufacturing intermediates and as components of the end product. In association with other nutrients, phosphates provide the ingredients essential for healthy plant life. Specialty Phosphates and the value added products they help to create are used in different applications depending on the crop, climate, soil, need for pest control and other factors. One of the many desirable characteristics of Specialty Phosphates is their solubility in water, thus they can be used in the manufacture of both liquid and dry fertilizers. Diammonium Phosphate

Used as an ingredient in specialty all-soluble, dry and liquid fertilizers.

Sodium Hexametaphosphate

Used as a deflocculant and sequestrant.

Sodium Tripolyphosphate

Used as a flotation reagent in copper concentrates.

Is used in the coating of steel.

Petroleum Products and Refining

In the petroleum industry, a number of phosphate products are incorporated as peptizing and deflocculating agents in oil well drilling mud. Sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium tripolyphosphate help control drilling mud viscosity, keeping it low enough to facilitate pumping. In refining applications, polyphosphoric acid is an important catalyst in oligomerization, the process by which crude oil molecules are broken down to create products such as gasoline. Is a source of concentrated acid to fortify electro-polishing and bright dipping solutions.

Paints and Coatings

Phosphates are effective dispersants in water-base paints, latex paints, and colored coatings used in the manufacture of paper. Tetrapotassium pyrophosphate helps manufacturers achieve a uniform dispersion of pigment to control viscosity and maintain optimum flow characteristics. Phosphoric Acid

Used in the manufacture of tribasic zinc phosphate, an "environmentally friendly" anti-corrosive pigment.

Used as an ingredient in specialty all-soluble, dry and liquid fertilizers.

Plastics/Rubber/Polystyrene

Innophos' phosphoric acid and phosphate salts are used in plastic and rubber manufacturing as additives to impart a variety of functions. Phosphoric acid is an effective accelerant for synthetic resins, while phosphate salts are used in the alkaline treatment of finished plastics. When producing expandable polystyrene, many manufacturers require a particular grade of tricalcium phosphate. Innophos offers specific grades designed to act as suspension aids when producing expandable polystyrene beads. Monosodium Phosphate

Used in the production of alkaline cleaners.

Pulp and Paper

In the pulp and paper industry pitch control and dispersion are important factors for any mill. Innophos realizes the importance of this and offers a range of phosphate salts and phosphoric acids to aid in the process. Sodium phosphates have two primary applications in pulp and paper mills. One is to control pitch at the grinding or washing stages of wood pulp and the other is as a paper coating dispersant, where solutions must exhibit uniform dispersions of ingredients such as clay, iron oxide and titanium dioxide. Used in the flame-proofing of specialty paper.

Disodium Phosphate

Provides caustic corrosion control in boilers in addition to anodic corrosion control.

Sodium Tripolyphosphate

Used as a sequestrant, deflocculation and descaling agent. Controls red and black water problems. Used as a cathodic corrosion inhibitor.

Monosodium Phosphate

Provides anodic corrosion control. Used to control lead and copper in drinking water.

Innophos' Specialty Phosphates offers a variety of properties to the textile industry that are important at various stages of production. In the cotton boiling bath, for example, sodium tripolyphosphate sequesters metal ions to produce a whiter stock prior to bleaching. When the bleach is applied, tetrasodium pyrophosphate can then help control the release of the bleach to maximize efficiency and control costs. Similarly, other phosphates, such as monosodium phosphate, promote complete reduction and exhaustion of dye to minimize waste. Phosphates are also valued for their synergistic properties when combined with soaps and detergents, increasing effectiveness through improved penetrating, wetting, emulsifying and dispersion. Water Treatment

Orthophosphates form largely insoluble calcium, magnesium, lead and iron salts and are anodic corrosion inhibitors. In drinking water, phosphates are used for lead and copper contamination control. They are also widely used in municipal, institutional and industrial applications such as potable water, wastewater, boiler, cooling and process water treatment, and for water softening. Other water treatment applications include red (iron) and black (manganese) water control, corrosion and scale control, where low doses and simple feed control systems effectively eliminate these problems.

Used as a precipitating agent in water softening compounds.

Controls release of bleach.

Sodium Hexametaphosphate

Used to prevent red and black water problems in drinking water. Used to control lead and copper in drinking water. Used as a cathodic corrosion inhibitor. Aids in water softening applications. Used as a sequestrant, deflocculation, descaling and scale control agent.

Phosphoric Acid

Fixing agent in the application of fluorocarbon "stain blockers" to nylon carpet fibers.

Trisodium Phosphate

Helps in the scouring of wool.

Sodium Hexametaphosphate All products are NSF certified and are available in various grades including FCC.

Is a sequestering agent used in processing of various goods.

Orthophosphates are used because of their reactivity and pacification properties, for the removal of metals from solution and as anodic corrosion inhibitors. The more complex polyphosphates are used for sequestering (deflocculation), softening and, in some cases, as cathodic corrosion inhibitors.

Miscellaneous Applications

Many Specialty Phosphates products have uses not characterized by a particular market, such as those involved in the manufacture of other industrial chemicals. Phosphoric acid can also be used as an electrolyte in fuel cells, a promising alternative energy source. These are listed here, along with products falling under specialized application categories not addressed previously in this brochure, but nevertheless commercially significant.

Reaction of polyphosphoric acid with the appropriate alcohol will produce phosphate esters for numerous diverse products. Polyphosphoric Acid

Is available in various strengths for use in the production of phosphate esters.

Industrial and Institutional Cleaners

Laundry, dishwashing and hard surface cleaning products vary greatly in their composition, from caustic formulations designed for industrial and heavy-duty home use, to the "gentle", neutral pH formulations, which allow frequent or prolonged exposure to unprotected skin for the consumer. Phosphorus chemicals are used throughout this spectrum, because they contribute in so many ways to cleaning effectiveness. Polyphosphates are incorporated into industrial laundry and automatic dishwashing detergents as sequestrants to soften water by removing calcium and magnesium ions as well as boosting the overall cleaning performance of these products. They are also widely used as detergent-building foaming agents, as emulsifiers of oils and greases, as peptizing agents to prevent redeposition of soil by keeping it in the cleaning solution, as pH buffers, and to provide alkalinity in a wide range of hard surface cleaning applications. Phosphates and phosphoric acid are used in metal cleaners to dissolve, replace, or disperse and emulsify soil particles.

Sodium Hypochlorite Sanitizer and Cleaner

Finds use as a cleaning and bleaching compound. Is an ingredient in dishwashing compounds, scouring powders, and dairy cleaners.

Used as a detergent builder. Used as a general purpose hard surface liquid cleaner where high solubility, water softening, emulsifying, dispersing and deflocculating properties are important.

Dentifrice

Phosphates have, for some time, been used in dentifrice applications for cleansing, polishing, and therapeutic purposes. In the early 1930s, the precipitated chalk common to many toothpastes was replaced with dicalcium phosphate dihydrate, which cleaned teeth with less abrasion than its predecessor. Today, dicalcium phosphate, dihydrate is widely used in dentifrice with some 50% of the crystalline dicalcium phosphate produced annually destined for use in toothpaste. Another popular dentifrice abrasive is dicalcium phosphate, anhydrous. Used in small amounts, this highly abrasive polishing agent gives formulations the capability of cleaning difficult nicotine and tea stains from discolored teeth.
