BloodDrive

Thank You

Big thanks to everyone who gave, attempted to give, or otherwise supported our April 13th blood drive with phone calls, homemade treats, and silent heroism. We gave 13 units that night! On top of that, an additional 26 units were given by KHCC members between our two previous blood drives at the church. That's awesome! The people at LifeShare asked me to pass along its sincerest thanks for the continued dedication of our church members. They often tell me that we are very unique in how much we give in comparison to other churches and organizations. Not that we're competing, but it's just nice to know. Our next drive is September 14th since there are no regular Wednesday meetings during the summer months. I will give at the center around late June/early July when I become eligible again and then will give at our September and December (14th) drives. Hope you will do the same. Thanks and God bless! -- Bonnie

A "Note" from the KHCC Music Department:

CHRIST AROSE!

What can exhausted pastors do to relax on Sunday nights after a hard day's work? Baptist preacher Robert Lowry went home to his wife and three sons--and wrote hymns. "Dr Lowry will continue to preach the gospel in his hymns long after his sermons have been forgotten," Ira Sankey once wrote, "Many of his hymns were written after the Sunday Evening service, when his body was weary but his mind refused to rest. Robert Lowry was born in Pennsylvania in 1826. At his conversion at age seventeen, he joined a Baptist church. Shortly afterward, he enrolled at the University of Lewisburg (now Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania). After graduating he pastored churches in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. He also taught at Bucknell and at one time served as its chancellor. Lowry gained a reputation for keen biblical scholarship and powerful, picturesque preaching. When gospel song editor William Bradbury died in 1868, Lowry was chosen to replace him as a publisher of Sunday school music. He's best known, however, for his own gospel songs, including, "Nothing but the Blood" (words and music) "Shall we gather at the River?" (words and music), "Where is my wandering Boy Tonight?" (words and music), "All the Way My Savoir Leads Me," (music), "I Need Thee Every Hour" (music) "Marching to Zion" (music) and of course, "Christ Arose" (words and music). "Music to me has been a side issue," he once said. "I would rather preach a gospel sermon to an appreciative audience than write a hymn. I have always looked upon myself as a preacher and felt a sort of depreciative when I began to be known more as a composer." This Hymn , "Christ Arose!" was written one evening during the Easter season of 1874 while Lowry was engaged in his devotions. He became deeply impressed with Luke 24: 6-8, especially the words of the angel at the tomb of Christ: "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!" The words and music began forming together in his mind. Going to the little pump organ in his home, Lowry soon completed what was to become one of our greatest resurrection hymns. Personal note: We sang this hymn on Easter Sunday as the Invitational hymn. I have always loved this particular hymn.

A "Note" from the KHCC Music Department:

CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY

John and Charles Wesley found themselves out of favor with many fellow Anglican ministers who spurned their fiery evangelistic preaching. Many pulpits was closed to them. A friend from his Oxford days, George Whitefield, twenty-two, who was having the same trouble, began preaching in the open air. In London, he asked Charles to stand with him as he preached to thousands in the open air at Blackheath, and Charles, too, got a vision for reaching the multitudes. He made his first attempt in the outskirts of London. "Franklyn, a farmer, invited me to preach in his field," he wrote. " I did so to about 500. I returned to the house rejoicing." Soon he was preaching to thousands. "My load was gone, and all my doubts and scruples. God shone upon my path; and I knew this was his will concerning me." A man named Joseph Williams heard Charles in Bristol: "I found him standing on a table-board, in an erect posture...surrounded by, I guess, more than a thousand people, some of them fashionable persons, but most of the lower rank of mankind. He prayed with uncommon fervency...He then preached about half an hour in such a manner as I have scarce ever heard any man preach...I think I never heard any man labor so earnestly to convince his hearers they were all by nature in a sinful, lost, undone, damnable state; that notwithstanding, there was a possibility of their salvation, through faith in Christ...All this he backed up with many texts of Scripture which he explained and illustrated, and then by a variety of the most forcible motives, arguments, and expostulation, did he invite, allure, quicken, and labor, if it were possible, to compel all, and every of his hearers, to believe in Christ for salvation." Charles Wesley still preaches today in much the same way through his ageless hymns that are sung around the world each Sunday. Perhaps his most exuberant anthem is the one he simple called" Hymn for Easter Day." Published in 1739. It originally consisted of eleven stanzas. The "Alleluias" were added later, but appropriately, for this is a hymn one never gets tired of singing. Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of man and angels say, Alleluia! Christmas Day is on Sunday this year, and I have found the hymn, "Jesus Christ Is Born Today! It is sung to the same tune as this hymn!
