Configuration Prerequisites

Configuration Prerequisites

This section describes the configuration requirements for using the following software:

MirrorView and MirrorView/A SnapView

MirrorView and MirrorView/A Configuration Requirements

MirrorView and MirrorView/A require the following:

One server, connected to one of the storage systems (a second server, connected to the other storage system, is optional). Both storage systems must be in the same Navisphere domain. A Fibre Channel connection between the two storage systems (direct, switch, or IP connection, shown on the following pages)

Cable Connections Between SPs at the MirrorView or MirrorView/A Sites MirrorView or MirrorView/A use a front-end port on each storage processor (SP) as a communication channel between the storage systems in a remote mirror configuration. This port is called the mirror port in this document. The mirror ports for the different storage systems are

Port 3 for a CX600 or CX700 SP Port 1 for a CX400 or CX500 SP

Although MirrorView and MirrorView/A can use the same SP ports, for performance reasons, we strongly recommend that they do not use the same SP ports.

!

CAUTION Currently, MirrorView and SAN Copy software cannot share the same SP port. Before installing the MirrorView Enabler, you must deselect any MirrorView ports that a SAN Copy session is using. Otherwise, any SAN Copy sessions using the MirrorView port will fail.

10

EMC CLARiiON Software Installation Guide

Configuration Prerequisites

For MirrorView or MirrorView/A to work correctly, the SP A mirror port at one site must be connected to the SP A mirror port on the other site and the SP B mirror port at one site must be connected to the SP B mirror port at the other site. The connections can be either direct or through a switch fabric. Either type of connection can be Fibre Channel (FC) or Fibre Channel over IP using FC-to-IP devices. Direct Remote Mirror Connections A direct mirror configuration consists of one primary storage system and one secondary storage system. The remote mirror connections must be between

SP A mirror ports on the primary and secondary storage systems SP B mirror ports on the primary and secondary storage systems

Configuration Prerequisites

Fabric Remote Mirror Connections A fabric mirror configuration consists of one primary storage system and up to four secondary storage systems. The fabric connections must be as follows:

SP A mirror port on the primary storage system must be connected to the same switch fabric as the SP A mirror port on the secondary storage system. SP B mirror port on the primary storage system must be connected to the same switch fabric as the SP B mirror port on the secondary storage system.

The fabric to which SP A mirror ports are connected can be the same fabric or a different fabric than the one to which the SP B mirror ports are connected.

You must zone the mirror port switch connections as follows:

A separate zone for the SP A mirror port on the primary storage system and the SP A mirror port on each secondary storage system. A separate zone for the SP B mirror port on the primary storage system and the SP B mirror port on each secondary storage system.

For example, if you have primary storage system 1 and secondary storage systems 2 and 3, you need the following two zones:

Zone 1 - SP A mirror port on storage system 1 and SP A mirror ports on storage systems 2 and 3. Zone 2 - SP B mirror port on storage system 1 and SP B mirror ports on storage systems 2 and 3.

Mirror ports can also receive host (server) I/O. If you want to use a mirror port for host I/O you will need a separate zone for each server HBA port and each mirror port with which you want the server to communicate. Figure 2 shows a sample remote mirror fabric configuration.

Installing Software on a CX-Series Storage System

Installing Software on a CX-Series Storage System

The Software Installation Wizard that you use to install software on a storage system is available as part of Navisphere Manager or Navisphere Manager Base version 6.16 or higher user interface or as a standalone version. The standalone version is

On the FLARE OE bundle, version 02.16 or higher, CD in the FLARE OE upgrade kits In the FLARE OE version 02.16 .zip file on the Software Downloads section of the EMC Powerlink website: http://powerlink.emc.com/support/sw_downloads/

EMC recommends that you use the standalone version because it may contain newer features than the version in Navisphere Manager or Navisphere Manager Base. You can run the standalone version in an Internet Explorer, Netscape, of Mozilla browser. For the supported versions of these browsers, refer to the Navisphere Manager release note in the Release Notes section of the Document Library on the EMC Powerlink website. The steps you must follow to install storage-system software are

Checking the storage-system configuration Loading the software files that you want to install and the standalone Software Installation Wizard files, if you are using it, on the host from which you will run the wizard. Using the wizard to install the storage-system software.

To Check the Storage-System Configuration

For the installation of software on a storage system to succeed, the conditions (rules) in Table 5 must be met. The Software Installation Wizard will check that these rules are met. If any of them are not met and the wizard cannot fix the condition, the software is not installed. To ensure successful installation of the software, we strongly recommend that before starting the Software Installation Wizard, you verify that as many of these rules are met as you can.

Installing and Uninstalling .exe Files on a Windows Server

Installing and Uninstalling .exe Files on a Windows Server

Installing the .exe files on a Windows server is optional.

If you want to use a Windows PC or server as a portal in your Navisphere domain, you must install the Windows Management Server and Windows UI executables on the portal. These executables are provided on the Navisphere Manager Accessories CD (see Table 3 on page 6). To install these executables, follow the instructions in the InstallShield Wizard and select the Manager UI, and the UIs for any other software installed on storage systems in the same domain as the Windows server.

You can also use these executables on a Windows host to provide additional security for interactions between the browser and the storage system, over and above the security provided by Navisphere Manager. For more information, refer to the network configurations information in the EMC Navisphere Security Administrator's Guide (P/N 069001124).

Specifying Communication Ports and Initializing Security

You must specify the server communication ports for the Windows server on which you installed the Navisphere UIs and Management Server executables. Installing and Uninstalling .exe Files on a Windows Server

To Use the Windows Server Once you have installed the Navisphere UIs and Management Server executables on the Windows server, specified the communication ports for this server, and initialized security, you can configure this server as a portal. A portal lets you manage storage systems that do not have the Storage Management Server software installed (legacy storage systems), and it lets you centrally monitor storage-system events via a Host Agent. For example, use this server as a portal when

you do not have a storage system with Storage Management Server software installed that can be used as a portal, and you want to manage legacy storage systems and centrally monitor storage system events, or you do have a storage system with Storage Management Server software installed, but you do not want to use this storage system as the portal.

When uninstalling the Navisphere UIs and Management Server executables from the Windows server (portal), you must first remove the node from any domain in which it is participating. If the software is reinstalled later on the same server, you can add the node back into the domain.

What Next?

For information on adding this server to an existing domain and setting up security see the EMC Navisphere Security Administrator's Guide (P/N 069001124). If you want to use this server to manage legacy storage systems and NAS systems, refer to the EMC Navisphere Manager Administrator's Guide (P/N 069001125).
