Main Street United Methodist Church

FEBRUARY 3, 2010

The Main Stream

Ash Wednesday Worship, Wednesday, February 17th, Noon and 7 pm

We will begin our Lenten Journey with these two worship services. The noon service will be a brief service of confession and repentance. The evening service will include a sermon by Dr. Jeff Patterson and musical specials by our choir. Both services will include the imposition of ashes as a sign of our repentance.

February 12th, the Children's Council is offering a time of fun and fellowship for our children aged infant through 5th grade from 6-9 PM. This is a great time for a date night for parents while the children hang out with friends at church. The twist? We are asking all the children to come in their pajamas and bring a sleeping bag or blanket, a pillow and their lovie or anything they sleep with. We will begin with dinner in the fellowship hall but then move to the Chapel for a movie on the big screen. We will provide dinner, a movie and time for fellowship for the children. Please make reservations by contacting Amy in the church office or via e-mail, [email protected] by noon on Tuesday, February 9th.

Beginning on Sunday, March 7, 2010 this eight-week class will cover the history, organization, worship and doctrines of the "people called Methodist." This class will meet in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School Hour and will be taught by our pastors. This class is aimed at answering the questions of people considering joining Main Street Church, those who have recently joined, or those who have been members for a while but want to learn more about the Methodist family. Please contact the church office to register for this class.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2010- "High Seas Expedition"

The dates have been set and we are making plans for Vacation Bible School. The dates are June 20-24 from 68:15 PM. Mark your calendars now so you and your children can be a part of this wonderful time of learning, fun and fellowship. Watch the Main Stream and Sunday bulletin for information on volunteering and registration for children. Questions? Contact Amy in the church office.

MSUMC will be hosting Family Promise the week of February 21-28, 2010. If you would like to help contact Vanda Viehman at 788-2313.

It would be very helpful to the many people who will visit our church for Tony Campolo's appearance on April 18th if our regular members have name tags. If you've lost your name tag, please contact the church office ([email protected]) to have a new one made.

Guest Minister on February 7th:

Dr. Frank H. (Duke) Ison will be with us for Jubilee and the 11 AM service on February 7th. Duke was born in Charlotte, NC and has been married to Vicki Elder since 1974. They have a daughter, Jenny, who lives in Winston-Salem. Duke is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (BA), the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University (MDiv) and Candler School of Theology at Emory University (DMin). He was ordained a deacon in 1972 and an elder in 1974. Duke has served the Rosman Charge (Asheville District) (1973-1975), Dilworth UMC (Charlotte District) as associate (1975-1983), Montmorenci UMC (Asheville District) (1983-1988), Weverville UMC (Asheville District) (1988-1994), Huntersville UMC (Charlotte District) (1994-2000), and Dilworth UMC (Charlotte District) (200-2006) as senior pastor. Duke is currently serving as the District Superintendent of the Greensboro District. Duke enjoys jogging, fly fishing and spending time at his mountain place at Wolf Laurel and is an avid Carolina fan.

Sunday School Teachers Needed

We are still looking for a few volunteers to help with some of our children's Sunday school classes. The 3 & 4 year old class needs volunteers for March 7th, 14th, and April 4th, 18th & 25th. The Kindergarten- 1st grade class needs volunteers for April 4th, May 2nd & 30th. If you can help in one of these classes on any of these dates, please contact Amy in the church office or via e-mail, [email protected]

Wednesday Night Live Dinner

Dinner is served from 5:30-6:15pm. MENU February 10th: February 17th:

This year our congregation will join more than 10,000 congregations who are involved in the Stephen Ministry. In April, a few key individuals from our church will be sent to a Stephen Leader Training event in St. Louis where they will receive a week of intense study and training. These leaders will return fully equipped to train and lead a team of Stephen Ministers in our congregation. Of course this does involve some expense, and we do need additional funds. Won't you consider a contribution, or a gift in honor or in memory of someone? Just mark your check or envelope for the STEPHEN MINISTRY and drop it in the offering plate. (A special thanks to those who have already contributed!) You will be hearing more about the role of the Stephen Minister in upcoming newsletters. Questions? Call Pastor Jeff.

Call Joann or Melissa at the Preschool office (993-4089) for information.

We extend our sympathies to: Eddie

Crawford upon the death of his father, Ed Crawford; to Pat Hill upon the death of her father, Pat McSwaim.

Bring your empty ink and laser jet toners and cartridges to the church office to be recycled. The church receives a $3.00 rebate for every one we turn in.

Everyone is welcome, whether you have read the book in Sunday school, on your own, or if you haven't read it yet and would like to prepare for Tony Campolo's visit. Tony's book is entitled How to Follow Jesus Without Embarrassing God.

Thanks to everyone Main Streets annual Chili Cook-off was a tremendous success. Even though this event was suppose be to the youth's gift for all of the support this Church has given us over the years we still raised enough money to offer several scholarships for this years mission trips. This means that youth's whose family may not be able to afford to send them will have an opportunity to participate in a potential life changing event this summer. Cook-Off

MISSION TRIP Parent Meeting

The parent and youth meeting to discuss ASP, Recreation, and the A & O Choir trip has been re-scheduled for Sunday evening February 14th at 7 pm in the fellowship hall. Any one interested in these events should be in attendance.

Dear Church Family,

The Veach Coltrane families deeply appreciate all kindnesses shown us during our recent time of sadness and loss. Being connected with a caring church family makes difficult times easier. Laura C. Smith Thank you Main Street for being there for me during my hip surgery. We appreciated all the visits by our pastors, the prayers, and cards. Please continue to pray for me as I heal. Pat Drewry

Volunteers needed

Please contact Pastor Rick if you are able to volunteer as an usher, greeter, or help in the kitchen at our 8:45am Jubilee service.

Communion Volunteers Needed

If anyone would be interested in training to help as a fill in when needed for the preparing of communion, please contact Judy Osborne at 993-2201 or Debbie Smith at 769-3267. There are time when the communion stewards need assistance in the preparation once a month. Some on-call backups would be great.

Youth ministry is a unique facet of the church family. To have a successful youth ministry in any church many facets need to work together. First, there is the front line support of Youth Advisors and Sunday school teachers who give countless hours of there time building relationships and just being here for the youth. Here at Main Street we could not ask for better crew of advisors and teachers to work with these youth. Second, there is the behind the scenes support from the church staff and youth parents. Jeff, Rick, Amy, Susan, Julie, and Charity have supported me from day one. Third, there is the support of the congregation. God has truly blessed me with the opportunity to begin my ministry here at Main Street and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the help and support I have received thus far and in the future. Wayne Purdy, Director of Youth and Young Adults Ministries.
