Mapping of Dental Science Research in India: A Scientometric Analysis of India's Research Output, 1999-2008 Har Kaur* and B.M.Gupta** *Medical College & Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh **National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies, New Delhi -11012 Scientometrics Online Journal March 21st 2010 Objectives The main focus of the study is: (i) to analyze the status, publication share, rank and growth of India's research output among the top 20 productive countries in dental sciences; (ii) to analyze productivity and quality of Indian research output in dental sciences; (iii) to analyze the productivity and quality of 15 major institutions participating in research in dental sciences; (iv) To analyze the pattern of research collaboration and major collaborating partners in dental sciences; and (v) to analyze the productivity and quality of leading 15 authors in research in dental sciences Analysis World Publication Share & Rank India holds 14th rank among the top 20 productive countries of the world in dental sciences, with its global publications share of 1.66%, as computed from cumulative world publications output data for 1999-2008. India has shown rise in its global publications share, rising from 0.56% to 2.86% from the year 1999 to the year 2008. Correspondingly India's world ranking improved from 18th position in 1999 to 9th in 2008 (Table 1). India's Publication Output As reflected in the Scopus database, India published 1380 research papers during 19992008 in dental sciences, with an average output of 138 papers per year. Of the total publications in dental sciences from dental sciences, 1165 appeared as articles, 116 as reviews, 41 as letters, 35 as editorials, 11 as conference papers, 7 as short surveys, 3 as notes, etc. The cumulative output of India in this field increased from 289 papers during 1999-03 to 1091 papers during 2004-08, showing a growth rate of 277.51%. The average citation per paper recorded on a three-year citation window by India in dental sciences was 1.38 during 1999-2008. The average citation per paper decreased from 1.48 during 19992003 to 1.36 during 2004-08. Compared to India, the quality of research, as reflected in average citation per paper, of select developed and developing countries was much higher: Germany (4.97), South Korea (4.29), Japan (3.91), UK (3.90), China (3.84), and Brazil (3.53). The h-index of Indian dental science literature during 1998-08 was 20. India's Institutional Profile Based on publications output data for India in dental sciences, a total of 25 institutions were identified as high productive ones publishing between 10 and 166 papers, with an average output of 35 papers per institution during 1999-2008. These top 25 institutions together contributed 874 papers (with 63.33% share) in the total cumulative research output by India in dental sciences during 1999-2008. These institutions along with their publications output are: Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal (166 papers), Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital , Chennai (138 papers), All India Institute

of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (70 papers), College of Dental Science, Devangere (53 papers), Nair Hospital Dental College, Mumbai (50 papers), Ragas Dental College & Hospital, Chennai (36 papers) and A.B.
