January 02 to present Compiled and edited a draft Code of Conduct on the Sustainable Management of Mangrove Ecosystems with supporting country case studies from Bangladesh, Benin, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mozambique, Philippines, Senegal, Thailand and Vietnam for the World Bank and the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems. December 02 and 03 Collaborative research with Can Tho University in Ca Mau, Mekong Delta, on the ecosystem functioning of mangroves in shrimp ponds. November 2002 July 2002 May 2002 Consultations about mangrove management in Bangladesh and India, with government staff, mangrove managers and local communities. Peam Krasop Wildlife Sanctuary, Koh Kong, Cambodia. Mangrove field work and preparation of a case study. Utilisation of mangrove products in Ving Chau, Soc Trang, Vietnam. Interviewed the local villagers and fishermen and collated data on the use of mangrove resources in the Full Protection Zone for an annex for the World Bank and Danida Coastal Wetland Protection and Development Project. Development and utilisation of biodiversity in the Ranong Biosphere Reserve, Thailand. Interviewed the local fishermen and villagers and collated data on use of mangrove resources. Prepared a review of Mangrove Biodiversity and Conservation Management for the World Bank. The work involved reviewing actions enacted by governments to protect mangroves. May 99 to Dec 2000 Provided mangrove biodiversity expertise for the Tropical Coastal Ecosystems Project (TCEP), financed by DANCED (Danish Co-operation for environment and development), in the TCEP study sites. The research involved mangrove ecology, utilization and management with special attention given to the growing importance of the mangrove study sites for conservation management, their potential for nature tourism and other educational/ recreational uses. Oct 99 to Dec 1999 Sematan study site, Sarawak. Obtained socio-economic and statistical data on the study site from government departments, for example Department of Agriculture and Department of Forestry. Negotiated collaboration with Department of Agriculture, DANCED, University of Aarhus and the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre to obtain a research permit. Responsible for organising and collecting field work data on mangrove flora and fauna biodiversity with two local Malaysian Fisheries Officers.

July 99 to Aug 1999 Ranong Biosphere Reserve, Thailand. Responsible for collecting fieldwork data on the mangrove flora and fauna biodiversity and environmental parameters with two local Thai fishermen. June 99 to July 1999 Kuala Selangor Nature Park, Peninsular Malaysia. Field research on mangrove flora and fauna biodiversity. April 97 to Nov 1997 Research on the "The effect of mangrove species diversity on invertebrate diversity and ecosystem function in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia" funded by the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Responsible for organising and collecting fieldwork data on mangrove productivity and diversity, in particular crustaceans and molluscs, in different aged stands of the well managed Matang mangrove forest, Perak, Malaysia. Feb 95 to Feb 1999 DPhil at the Department of Biology, University of York, U.K.. Sponsored by the U.K. Darwin Initiative and NERC. Collaboration was with the Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang and Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. Twelve months field work based at two locations on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Merbok and Matang. I was responsible for collecting and analysing mangrove ecological data.
