Message FroM our PrinciPal

Dear Alumnae and Friends, We opened our school year on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 with Mass in our gym with students, staff, families, trustees, friends and Sisters of Saint Joseph. It was the birthday of our wonderful Mount. I took advantage of the moment to speak briefly about our founder, Sister Regis Casserly, CSJ, and to tell the students about our beginnings. I also reminded them that we were celebrating the Mass of the Holy Spirit as we do every year. We ask the blessings of our God on the work we will be doing, on the quality of our relationships, and on our alumnae, families and friends. I reminded them that the Holy Spirit moves in us and among us, rejoices in us and gives us all we need to become the people our God is dreaming for us to be. And then I gave them the message I have for you: this anniversary year is not simply a year of looking back at past accomplishments. It is an invitation to live consciously and lovingly in the moment and to be our best selves, worthy of our inheritance. It is a challenge to each of us, to respond to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit. It is a time to hear and make real our God's assurance, "See, I make all things new." Together, we will remember, we will celebrate, and we will achieve with the help of our loving God, with the Sisters of Saint Joseph whose legacy we are, with our alumnae, trustees, families and friends and with one another. The theme for our year-long celebration is "Down All our Days, Your Light Will Shine." We sing those words each time we sing the Mount Song. That song is a past, present and future moment. It is a prayer, it is a challenge: Let us bring light to one another and to the world. I am so looking forward to seeing you at our 125th events this year. Please see the website and look for emails from us! Happy Birthday, Mount Saint Joseph Academy! "Down all our days, your light will shine!" Gratefully,

Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends, An anniversary, such as the 125th of the founding of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, motivates me to reflect upon all that has transpired over the years, how our lives have changed d e r Hea and, more importantly, how this school community has influenced and changed the lives of thousands of women touched by the service and ministries of the Sisters and those who shared in their ministry. Since the Mount's founding in 1885, the Sisters of Saint Joseph have maintained their sponsorship of the Academy. They, together with the Board of Trustees, join in congratulating the alumnae, faculty and staff, parents, friends and neighbors in celebrating 125 years of living the Mount's mission to "promote academic excellence, cultivate respect for all people, foster unity and reconciliation, and educate young women for compassionate leadership and service." As a graduate of the class of 1964, currently serving as President of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, it is with immense pride that the Sisters of Saint Joseph and I join with you in your reflection and celebration of the many blessings bestowed upon the Mount community, the generations of women whose lives have been shaped for service and who, in turn, have influenced others by sharing their values and the Gospel message learned as students with those whom they met over the years The Sisters of Saint Joseph may not be as physically present in the classroom and hallways of Mount St. Joseph Academy as we once were, but yet our spirit, commitment, shared faith in the mission and ministry of this marvelous academy is strong. Know also of our deep pride and gratitude to all our partners in ministry who carry out this mission today. Together let us celebrate our past, embrace our present, and envision a future for generations of young women to come. May the words of the Mount song, "down all our days your light will shine" echo in our hearts and be the anthem for the Mount's future. Congratulations and prayerful best wishes as you celebrate this milestone in the Mount's history. May God our Creator, Jesus our Redeemer and the Spirit who calls us to life be with you today and always.

Mount Saint Joseph Academy

125 Years

Voices from the Mount

I have a question: What do Fourth of July fireworks, the Saint Patrick's Day Parade, the Boston Common Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and Mount Saint Joseph Academy have in common? The answer: They are winners, all. All have stood the test of time. Remember Jordan Marsh (especially the enchanted Village on the ninth floor at Christmas?), Bailey's hot fudge sundaes, white gloves, and chapel veils? Remember the Central Artery, "fish on Friday," The Ice Capades, and Paragon Park? Do you ever think about all those things that you just kind of thought would be around forever? Those things you remember with a twinge of nostalgia. Can they really be gone? Makes you think a lot about the things that last, the things that endure. I'll bet eben Jordan and Benjamin Marsh were sure they had a winner. (I thought, for sure, those Bailey's hot fudge sundaes were winners.) Aren't we glad the Mount's founder, Mother Mary Regis Casserly, had a winner? Yes, 125 years and more than 8,000 graduates later, it's clear she found a winner in Mount Saint Joseph Academy. I just had to know the secret. (Really, how did Sr. Mary Regis beat the recipe for Bailey's hot fudge?) Lucky for me, Sr. Roseann Amico '57 provided some clues. With her kind introductions, I had the pleasure of talking to a number of women who sensed the secret of the Mount's success. elinor Ryan '35 recalled, "If I never laughed again after I left the Mount, I would have laughed enough for a lifetime." She remembered her friend, Peg, from North Brighton who went on to become a doctor. "Peg's mom had to come down at 5:55 p.m. every night to drag her home for dinner because she never wanted to leave school," elinor assured me "we had very bright girls, but we had some real characters." Barbara Scanlon, CSJ '52 remembered being urged "to continually be open to new experiences." In reflecting on her extraordinary career, she said, "The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. The more I saw, the more I wanted to see. The more relationships I developed, the more I wanted to forge."

Celebrating

1885

Mount Saint Joseph Academy, a girls' boarding school for elementary and high school students, opened on September 7, 1885. The Academy was founded by the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, to educate and prepare students with a sound secular education combined with Catholic religious instruction. Under the leadership of Mother Mary Regis, the Sisters had purchased the former Fresh Pond hotel in Cambridge and converted it into the academy for young ladies. When the school opened its doors, eleven students attended and the first graduating class consisted of three young ladies.

September 8, 1891, was the first day of school after the Mount moved from Cambridge to its present site in Brighton. The formal opening and dedication of the new Academy was held on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 1892.

Gen Carmel '06 e-mailed from China with a favorite recollection of her Mount days. She remembered distributing food and clothing to the homeless on Boston Common on one of the coldest days of the year. "We began in the 10 degree weather shivering and complaining, but after several hours, we all felt a lot closer and we were humbled by the strength of the people we were serving." Again, there are so many stories. But in listening to the stories from so many women over so many years, some distinct themes emerged, themes that I suggest might just be the clues to what endures. ReLATIONSHIPS. every woman fondly recalled the friendships which were born at the Mount. My conversation with elinor Ryan made me realize how such strong relationships were cultivated. elinor said, "The nuns wanted us to do well; they wanted us to be competitive. But they also wanted us to help each other to do well." eDUCATION. Mount grads, to a woman, appreciate the value of a Mount education and its distinct advantage. In a recent conversation with two Mount grads from the class of 2009, my fellow trustees, Jim Dowd, Paul Stanton, and I learned how truly horrified these grads were at the lack of writing skills possessed by their college classmates. They had dropped by the Mount to thank Mr. Ward for his fine instruction. PURPOSe. Mount grads possess a sense of purpose. They understand that their education is valuable. More importantly, they understand that it is how they use the gift of a Mount education that can truly make a difference. While the voices of the Mount grads were different some tremulous with age, some wistful with nostalgia, some bright with the energy of youth their vision was remarkably constant. They saw the true gift of the Mount experience the relationships, the education, the purpose.

CSSJ High School Summer Conference

Mount's own Meredith Sharka '11 joined 37 students from Catholic high schools across the country, all founded and/or sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, for a four-day, life-changing adventure. Students gathered at Saint Joseph College in Brooklyn, New York, this past July to examine Millennium Development Goals and Social Justice teachings as they toured the United Nations Headquarters. The experience deepened their understanding of the charism of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Meredith exclaims, "This conference left me with a profound feeling of empowerment and responsibility for our planet, reaffirming my desire to pursue a career in social justice."

Student Government Day

Dello Russo '10 gives welcoming address at State House

Student Government Day at the State House on April 9, 2010, was extra special for the Mount this year. Catherine Dello Russo '10 (daughter of Lynn Connell Dello Russo '73) represented Governor Deval Patrick and delivered the welcoming address to hundreds of students from throughout the Commonwealth. The historic legislative chamber, filled with teachers and students, became the pivotal center for Catherine surrounded by historic paintings depicting our state's victorious past with Governor Winthrop, John Adams, and John Hancock looking down upon all. John Key of the Department of education (that hosts this stimulating forum) informed Kathleen Heitman, Mount coordinator for this event, that Catherine's speech was by far the best ever given by a student. Also attending was Thamyr Golafaie '11, the junior alternate. Mount Saint Joseph Academy is doubly proud of both of these students and the honor they bring to our school.

Julie o'toole, mother of Mary o'toole '84, celebrates 25 years at the Mount. Julie was recognized during a ceremony organized by MSJa students last spring honoring Julie for her service to the Mount. Julie has been preparing breakfast and lunch for Mount students for 25 years. Braving rain and snow, students knew they could always count on Julie's warm and nutritious meals as well as her homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Marie laundry, Mount's athletic director, celebrated her own milestone this year. Marie has run Mount's athletics department for the last 10 years. Many alumnae would testify to Marie's competence and diligence in organizing Mount's participation in all interscholastic sports, including Girls' catholic conference. active in her own South Boston parish, Gate of Heaven, Marie's love of her job here at the Mount transcends her love for all her Mount athletes.

It took us a long time and many uniform styles and colors before we settled on that "chic" little number! We were allowed to wear yellow long- or short-sleeved blouses (Peter Pan collar only!) and brown knee socks or nylons and, of course, we were NOT allowed to roll our skirts up more than one inch above our knees! We thought we looked better than any of the other schools around because our colors/uniform style was so updated and hip! Looking at them in the Spring magazine almost makes me want to say the blue frumpy dress wasn't that bad after all!".

2010 Annual Report of Giving

This section is now 15 pages

his Annual Report recognizes all those who join us in supporting the school's effort to provide a Mount education for today's young women and those of future generations. These gifts help us continue our commitment to excellence both in the classroom and in our extracurricular programs, keep tuition affordable, enable professional training and education for our teachers and staff, and ensure our ability to offer financial assistance to eligible young women. The Mount's Annual Fund plays a significant role in forwarding the mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy by supporting its annual operating budget and the day-to-day reality at 617 Cambridge Street. These unrestricted gifts are an essential supplement to tuition income, giving the Mount the resources necessary to offer its students the best possible educational experience within a quality learning environment. Gifts, both unrestricted and restricted, are a sound investment in our future. The generous support of all our donors ensures that a Mount Saint Joseph Academy education is possible for this and future generations of students, our Young Women of Promise. In this economic climate the number of donors increased as did the total dollars contributed. We are grateful that you included the Mount in your charitable contributions. Since 1885, members of this school community have been committed to "cultivating the intellect and making a special training of the heart."

Board of Trustees 20092010

Mount Saint Joseph Academy is blessed to have an enthusiastic, hard working group of women and men who represent most facets of the school community including: The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, who sponsor the Mount, alumnae, parents of alumnae, representatives of the local community, friends, and the Principal who is a non-voting member. Members of the Board of Trustees volunteer their time, talent, and resources to advance the total mission of the Mount and are responsible for its governance and fiscal well-being. Their respect for the Mount's history, and the responsibility they share for its present and future, is gratefully appreciated. Paul Stanton, Chair edward Cahill Laura Chisholm, 1994 Sandra e. Cole eleanor Deady, CSJ, 1957 James Dowd Celia Fisher Kathleen Fraser, 1967 Linda J. Gorham, 1969 erin Lynch, 1994 Marie Therese Martin, CSJ Patricia McCarthy, CSJ, 1964 eileen A. Dear Friends of the Mount, As I come to the close of my term as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I want to share my personal epiphany about the Mount Saint Joseph Academy community. I have always been a firm believer in the power of a community who exemplifies Christian values in its words and actions. And the more time I spend among the young women of the Mount, the more impressed I become with the power of their Christian community. It is reflected in the way they interact with each other and with faculty and staff, in the way they greet and treat guests like myself, and it is especially manifest in the way they view the larger community and their role within it. Their commitment to be compassionate, supportive members of their communities is certainly learned from the traditions and teachings of the Sisters of Saint Joseph who started their work at the Mount one hundred and twenty five years ago this fall. I am proud to be a member of the ever-growing and fiercely loyal community of supporters who have an abiding commitment to help this jewel of an institution flourish now and into the future. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we offer our deepest appreciation for your continued support and dedication to the Mount. Sincerely,

Chairman Paul J. Stanton greeted Women of Excellence 2010 on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Paul J. Stanton, Chair, Board of Trustees Mount Saint Joseph Academy

Helen Sullivan, CSJ Ann-Marie Teuber Thank you for sharing, believing, and investing in the mission of Mount Saint Joseph Academy.

A heartfelt thank you to all alumnae. your participation is a testament to your continuing commitment to the Mount, and ensures a Mount education for our current and future young women who desire to call themselves "Mounties." your involvement in the Mount Saint Joseph Academy giving program serves as an example to our current students, the young Women of Promise. you are the shoulders on whom these girls stand. A special thank you to the Classes of 1952, 1957, and 1964 for being among the top ten classes in each of the three alumnae categories, and to our present Class of 2013 who led the school community in the same three categories. This is commendable.

Faculty and Staff Giving

The Mount's dedicated faculty and staff are committed to excellence in all aspects of school life. Following in the tradition of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston who in 1885 founded and continue to sponsor Mount Saint Joseph Academy, the faculty provides a challenging curriculum preparing young women to value academic excellence, to respect all people, and to take their place in society as compassionate leaders willing to be of service to others. We are most grateful to the faculty and staff for their contributions in and out of the classroom as well as their financial support.
