Move On to World Class Skills: Supporting numeracy in the lifelong learning sector

Encouraging demand for Skills for Life and creating new ways of supporting learners has been a way of life for the Move On team for the last four years. The Move On to World Class Skills: Supporting numeracy in the lifelong learning sector paper pulls together a range of new and existing numeracy resources generated by the Move On and Move On Up programmes, with the aim of helping teachers and trainers to refresh and strengthen practice. The resources are freely available and can be interpreted and customised as appropriate.

Supporting CPD requirements

The Quality Improvement Agency's (QIA) teaching and learning programme outlines ten pedagogy approaches to guide the reflective practitioner to select areas for professional development as part of the annual CPD requirement. This paper links key Move On numeracy resources to the pedagogy approaches so that teachers and trainers can quickly identify which Move On resources can support identified individual or team development. These resources support training focused on planning provision, session planning, classroom management, barriers to learning and increasing participation and achievement in numeracy. Maths methods module How do you add, subtract, multiply and divide? What range of approaches can you use to support learners? This module provides an overview of some of the most commonly used strategies for calculation. Pedagogy approaches

These resources support training focused on personal skills, improving achievement, planning delivery, selecting and evaluating resources, teaching strategies and increasing participation and achievement in numeracy. Asterisked resources also focus on assessment and support training, which focuses on evaluation of assessment tools, improving achievement and session planning. The Learning Journey: Move On to test success (numeracy) This two and a half-hour module supports teachers preparing learners to take the National Tests. The Move On approach: teacher support pack

Materials and activities for teachers with little experience in organising learning that follows the Move On approach. This pack focuses on initial and diagnostic assessment and preparing learners for success in the National Certificates in Adult Literacy and/or Numeracy. Materials specific to numeracy include: · sample checklist for diagnostic assessment in numeracy at Levels 1 and 2 · sample session plans. Lists of national paper and web-based resources to develop and practise skills; mapped to the numeracy curriculum.

Learning chunks

Learning chunks provide a model of how teachers can support development of individual elements of the numeracy core curriculum across a range of skills areas, from Entry 1 to Level 2. They utilise many of the approaches highlighted in NRDC research and the Thinking Through Mathematics project, and could also form the basis of a staff development session to encourage staff to share best practice. Enables participants to brush up and consolidate personal Level 2 numeracy skills, explore basic skills support strategies and gain the National Certificate in Adult Numeracy. The course has ten three-hour modules and each module contains a specific skills focus, support strategy tips and skills/test practice. Gives teachers the opportunity to reflect on and develop their practice in maximising achievement for learners working at Entry 3.

Pedagogy approaches

These resources support training focused on personal development, using interactive approaches and e-learning to embed Skills for Life in workplace training. Move On Learner Route ­ maths Online practice and preparation for brushing-up skills to achieve a qualification in maths, where you can: test skills; take practice tests; review answers; brush up skills; prepare for the test situation; find a local test centre. The maths route has options for skills development and test preparation at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Short, sharp, focused and interactive, Hot Topics are for those who need a short brush-up of particular numeracy skills at Entry 3, Level 1 or Level 2.
