Leaps and Bounds was honored with the National Silver Quill Award for the third straight year. Many thanks to the MS USAG SACC for their contributions that made this honor possible. USAG National Congress in Indianapolis was the site for the annual awards dinner for USAG national, regional, and state volunteers.

Kathy Feldman and her staff hosted an excellent congress in a beautiful city.

Where Am I? Reno, Louisville, Portland???

Did you even bother to unpack this summer? Master workshops, judge's symposium, state clinics, etc. was the summer fare. The trip schedule was as follows: Louisville, Reno, Jackson, Portland, Tuscaloosa, and Indianapolis. If you did not attend one of the above, you certainly missed a wealth of knowledge from a lot of talented people. The clinicians from our state that were sent, Mabel Miller, Terry Kruchowsky, Richelle Gray, Cindy Wallace, and Emily Mayer, earned every penny that was spent for their trip. Many thanks to their willingness to work so hard and bring their knowledge back to our state. The Tom Koll clinic in Tuscaloosa was, of course, excellent. The great teacher that he is, imparted his expertise to the professional members of Mississippi and Alabama.

Notes from Congress

Next years Congress is in St. Paul, MN and 2007 is in San Jose, CA. There is a new level of professional membership for levels 1-3. This is an introductory level for coaches, at least 16 years of age, and costs $15.00. They have to be safety certified, and must pay full price for that course. These coaches may not coach anything above a level 3 at a meet. Prep Optional Coaches must be professional members. The introductory level also applies to cheerleader coaches whose athletes will participate in the USAG Cheerleading program. The cheerleader athlete membership will also be $15.00. The new Rules and Policies is available on line, or you must call the national office if you wish to have a hard copy. Tom Koll: 50% of membership have been reached through Master's and Regional Clinics. Major optional Rule Change is Level 7's. Value parts are there. Look at the concept of special requirementsthe deduction for omitting is .5 each NOT .2 anymore. Be sure and understand the new combination deductions. Ex: 7's need non acro series and flight element. Read and know the deductions for combo deductions for they made up on requirement. Level 1,2, and 3. Urge participation in these programs These new compulsories have a new philosophy. Last quad, these levels were not designed for competition. This time, they are. There was some discussion on number of level 1-3 athletes per session. This was tabled at their last meeting, but it was noted that more 1,2, and 3 athletes could be run in one session than allowed in R and P. This will again be discussed in the near future. Other organizations can use our routines, but they cannot reproduce the routines or charge for learning these routines at a clinic. They can modify it, but not reproduce it. Gary Anderson: National Elitequantum leap from JO to international scene. National Elite is grass roots for Elite. They are trying to be more user friendly, non-restrictive, maybe no score requirements. Now anyone who wants to participate with dedication, desire and up to the monumental task will be considered. There are no changes in compulsories. Changes are on evaluation of some routines. Some judges said they needed more deductions to determine the difference between gymnasts. Now, if you miss blind change, or if you turn beneath bars, or if you get stuck, deductions will be reflective. There is a change in the post flight in Yurchenko vaults. There is a change in physical abilities. You do have to have a minimum score in optional and compulsories - at this point. There is no more American Classic or American Challenge - this is because the code won't be finalized until January. There will be elite clinics in January-Regional/ Zones. Testing is in May. There is a regional/zone qualifying meet in June, and two national opportunities, probably in Texas. Jan Greenhawk: State Chairs will be elected on line. Hopefully we can elect the State Administrative Committee on line in the next few years. Regional and State Chairs will send all financial reports to John Hewlett. Remember, your state committee has jurisdiction over the competitive calendar in each state. Kathy Kelly: Judges Certification is going well. Portland was very successful. State chairs will receive a list of all who passed judges test. We have 9.000 plus pro members in the women's program. State chairs were directed to keep very good records of any controversial situations or phone calls. Steve Rybacki: The elite program is restructuring educational systems and methods which should open the doors of national team training centers. People who want to be a part of this program will get assistance. This is the first time the training center has been opened up to the High Performance Seminar. Goal: To get more grass roots with what is going on. He repeated-they are willing to help. The elite judges community has been shrunk enabling those remaining to be more personal and giving them the opportunity to make better in roads to FIG. Since Jackie Fie's resignation, we have to start over. This group will include ex-athletes. They have received approximately 75% of the FIG Code of Points. Tops National Elite Program will serve as a bridges between Jo and FIG-a pathway. Pan American Games are in Rio, and World's are in Melbourne.

Thank you to Deb Walls and TG Hawkins for providing notes to me during my absence at the meetings. Nancy
