ABSTRACTS OF ON-GOING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

EFFECT OF PRE-HARVEST APPLICATION OF ETHREL ON NIGHAL DATES RIPENING AND QUALITY This study was conducted in Barka Tree Nursery Farm during 2008 season. The objective of this study was to optimize the effect of pre-harvest application of ethrel on ripening of Naghal fruits at Biser stage. Three concentrations of Ethephone (1000, 2000, 3000 p.p.m./l water) were sprayed along with control (water) on fruit bunches to increase ripening along with control. The results showed that there were no significant effects between three concentrations of ethephone on the fruits ripening of Naghal cv.

EFFECT OF POST-HARVEST APPLICATION OF ETHREL ON NIGHAL DATES RIPENING AND QUALITY This study was conducted at Barka Tree Nursery Farm during 2008 season. The objective of this study was to enhance ripening of Biser stage of Nighal fruits after the harvest of the fruits. Bunches of fruit were sprayed with three concentrations of ethephone (1000, 2000, 3000 p.p.m./l water) along with control (water). The results showed absence of significant effect of spraying three ethephone concentrations on the ripening, shrinkage and drop of Naghal fruits as compared to the control.

EFFECT OF PRE-HARVEST APPLICATION OF ETHREL ON RIPENING AND QUALITY OF KHALAS AL-DHAHIRA DATES This study was conducted at Barka Tree Nursery Farm during 2008 season. The objective of this study was to increase the ripening rate of Khalas Al-Dhahirah fruits before accessing the humidity in Batinah coastal region. Ethephone at three concentrations (1000, 2000, 3000 p.p.m./ l water ) was sprayed along with control (water) on fruit bunches to enhance ripening. The results showed that there was no significant effect of ethephone on the ripening and quality of the fruits of Khalas Al-Dhahirah.

EFFECT OF SOURCE OF POLLEN GRAINS ON FRUIT SET, RIPENING TIME AND FRUIT QUALITY OF KHALAS AL-DHAHIRAH CULTIVAR. This study was conducted in two locations: Barka Tree Nursery Farm (Batina) and Nizwa Al-Rfu farm (Interior) during 2008 season. Seven males (Khoor, Alnaseeb, Medgahdel, Abosaaba, Bahlany, Ghareef and Naghayli ) were used to pollen Khalas Al-Dhahirah date palm trees. There were no significant differences in fruit set, ripening time, total soluble solids and some fruit characteristics in both the locations.

EFFECT OF POLLEN GRAIN SOURCE ON FRUIT SET AND YIELD IN ZABAD This study was conducted in two locations Wadi Quriyat Date Palm Research Station Interior and Barka Tree Nursery Farm, Batinah during 2007-2008. The objective of this study was to overcome low percentage of fruit set and yield in cv. Zabad. Pollen grains of five male cultivars were used to pollinate the flowers of Zabad. The results showed that there was no significant difference between sources of pollen grains (males) on either the fruit set or the quality of zabad fruits. However, there was some effect of males on fruit set but it was unstable and fruit set was still low as compare to other date palm varieties.

EFFECT OF FRUIT THINNING OF KHALAS DATE PALM CULTIVAR ON FRUIT DROP, RIPENING TIME, YIELD AND DATES QUALITY This study was conducted in two locations: Barka Tree Nursery Farm (Batinah) and Wadi Quriyat Date Palm Research Station (Interior) during 2008 season to study the effect of fruit thinning of Khalas cv. on fruit drop, ripening time, yield and dates quality. Three levels of thinning were applied: (a) 25% of strands numbers and 10% of strands length, (b) 25% of strands numbers and 25% of strands length and (c) 35% of strands numbers from the centre of bunch. The results obtained from the study indicated that there were significant differences between locations in most characters and in total yield. However, there were no significant differences between the treatments in respect of fruit ripening time.

EFFECT OF BORON FOLIAR APPLICATION ON FRUIT SET OF ZABAD CULTIVAR This study was conducted in two locations: Wadi Qurayat Date Palm Research Station (interior) and Barka Tree Nursery (Batinah) during 2007-2008. The objective of this study was to over come the low percentage of fruit set and yield in Zabad. Three concentrations of Borax viz 0.2%, 0.4% ,0.6% and 0.0% as control mixed with 0.5 gm of pollen grains were sprayed on female flowers to pollinate the inflorescences of Zabad. The results showed that there was no significant effect of borax on fruit set and fruit quality as compared to control.
