Engines & Materials BG Opens Service Training Center

Local trainers to be cultivated for each region by 2014.

The Engines & Materials BG has opened a new service training center on the Incheon plant site and aims to have local trainers deployed in every region the BG serves by 2014. The 266m2 facility is outfitted with the latest training equipment in order to develop people who can remain in step with the latest advances in technology. The trainees can learn in comfort with the provision of locker rooms, a library, and lounge. With the Incheon center now open, the Engines & Materials BG will expand the operational platform in stages for maximum effectiveness. The plan calls for establishing a reference library in 2010, qualifying 20 local trainers, and setting up locally-run training operations for Korea, China and the United States. The goal is to have a global service network in place in 2014, when trainers deployed in each region will be able to provide instruction on engine maintenance and repair. The training curriculum is divided into Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Local Trainer. Trainees for the Local Training course, the highest level, must have outstanding technical knowledge as well as lecturing skills and the appropriate attributes (language and cross-cultural understanding) for working in a specific geographical region. They will be eligible to attend exclusive classes at the Head Office at least once a year, and they will be given the first priority for participating in new training courses as they become available. Some thirty persons attended the opening ceremony for the new training center,

They also practiced installing the engines and learned various maintenance techniques. The lecture phase of the program covered GSN24 (Global Service Network), which is the service portal operated by the Engine and Materials BG, and the Engine Parts Manual System (EPMS), which provides parts data along with a visual manual. As a result, their understanding of the Doosan Infracore after-sales service system was enhanced. During the program, they also had time to visit Komarine 2009, an international shipbuilding and offshore industry show held at the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center (BEXCO). The trainees, who are all highly experienced and qualified, were able to receive additional theoretical training as well as practice. They all expressed great satisfaction with the effectiveness of the course and said they would convey what they learned to their colleagues back home. Anxiously Awaiting the Recipient's Reaction

Nicole Pearce, DII Bobcat, Litchfield HR

I love getting gifts on my birthdays, Mother`s Day and Christmas. The most memorable ones are from my children--stuff they have made in school and kindergarten I give presents on the birthdays of my family members and close friends. There are also gifts for Christmas, Mother's Day and Father's Day. I try to buy things that will be useful for the receiver and something I know he or she will appreciate. The amount spent of course depends very much on the person it is for. For friends, around US$40 is usually sufficient, but with family, the price tag should be closer to US$100. Sometimes gift-giving is a burden, especially if I need to buy many gifts within a short time. I really can't afford it! In Norway we have a tradition of giving our children money to learn how to drive when they turn 18 years. We also give money when people get confirmed (15 years old) in the church. When infants get christened, it's a tradition to give money or some cutlery in silver to the parents. As for me, I'd love for someone to buy me a trip somewhere or a nice week at a spa. However, nothing could be better than receiving something totally unexpected, right?

I enjoy receiving gifts, especially when I do not know what they are. However, fresh wild flowers and personalized gifts are always nice. I typically get gifts twice a year--my birthday and Mother's Day. Unfortunately, my birthday is in the same month as Christmas, so my friends and family members often choose to combine my birthday and Christmas gift into one. The gifts that mean the most to me are those that have had thought put into them such as preplanned gifts that take time and effort to create. One of my favorite gifts has been a basket of items that personally reflected the things I enjoy. The basket included a relaxing CD that I keep in the desk drawer, fragranced candles, magazine, slippers, chocolate and wine. I feel I am not a person who expects gifts. I tend to know something will come on my birthday or Mothers Day from family members such as my parents, siblings or husband. When I have received a gift that I didn't expect, I feel obligated to give something in return, even if it is just a "thank you" card. I have also felt obligated to give something in return when I have been given a gift that has been what I consider to be extravagant for the gift-giving occasion. I don't give gifts all that often. Mainly they are to family members and close friends for the obvious occasions such as Christmas and birthdays. In the US, flowers and jewelry are common gifts on Mother's Day, while outdoors or sports items would be typical for Father's Day. Valentine's Day is one of the biggest gifts giving days of the year. Gifts given include cards, flowers, chocolates, jewelry, stuffed animals, balloons, cologne and lingerie. The amount I spend really depends on who the recipient of the gift is, as well as the occasion. For family members I tend to spend more than I would on friends. Overall, gift giving doesn't present a burden for me. I find the most difficult part is choosing a gift that the recipient will enjoy and appreciate. The results are not always easy to predict. Sometimes I spend a significant amount of time preparing and the person doesn't seem to appreciate the gift, while other times I pick something up at the last minute and the gift is a huge success. Gift giving is always a pleasure for me. I typically give family members and close friends gifts for Christmas and birthdays. My first objective when shopping for gifts is to find something the recipient would really want. My goal is to give them something they desire or something I feel they would enjoy having. The pleasure of giving gifts is watching the recipient open the gift. I often have a difficult time waiting for the occasion to give the gift because I am so excited to see their reaction when they open it.

Unable to Board after Getting a Sword

Xian Sheng Hua, DIY Sales Division

I have received many gifts on birthdays and anniversaries or at various company events. One time, I was given a sword, but when it was time to board the airplane, they wouldn't let me carry it with me. So, I was forced to go through some very troublesome procedures. I buy a lot of gifts, too, especially when friends have their birthdays or weddings. However, I'm very careful in choosing what to buy. The recipient's tastes are the most important consideration when deciding on a gift. I also try to remember what the person has mentioned wanting. I really like to hear them say, "Oh that's something that I've always wanted to have!" That makes me feel great. Isn't it always better to give presents that people truly appreciate? The amount I spend on a gift depends on the situation, but usually it is around US$50.00. Of course when it comes to my parents, cash is the most appreciated gift of all. According to Chinese custom, people bring eggs dyed red to people who have just had a baby. The color red represents happiness and is a gesture of sharing that feeling.
