Frank Smart Whittingham (1895-1984) was born at Hafod Farm, Pontblyddyn

and farmed there for some 50 years, taking over the tenancy from h i s

father William Whittingham i n 1928. He also leased Pant farm, Caergwrle,

which l i k e Hafod belonged to the Plas Teg estate. In 1944 he purchased

Cae Madoc Uchaf, a holding i n Bryneglwys which he kept u n t i l 1953. The

family resided at Hafod and had b a i l i f f s l i v i n g at Pant and Cae Madoc.

Being a ploughman he was exempt from F i r s t World War service

u n t i l 1917 when he joined the 3rd Reserve Hussars, l a t e r transferring to

the Tank Corps BEF France. During the Second World War he became an

a g r i c u l t u r a l haulage contractor, and was a member of the War A g r i c u l t u r a l

D i s t r i c t Committee f o r the Hope and Buckley area.

Many of h i s i n t e r e s t s were concerned with a g r i c u l t u r e . He was

a member of the NFU f o r 44 years and made an honorary member i n 1972.

Previously he was Caergwrle NFU chairman and president, and represented

F l i n t s h i r e NFU f o r 21 years on the Welsh Regional Committee of the Wool

Marketing Board.

He was elected to F l i n t s h i r e County Council i n 1958 ( f o r

Caergwrle No 2 Division) and was active on many committees including the

F l i n t s h i r e A g r i c u l t u r a l Education Committee (from 1920s) and the County

Records Committee. He r e t i r e d as councillor on reorganization i n 1974.

He also played an active role i n h i s immediate neighbourhood, being

churchwarden at Hope parish church and governor of C a s t e l l Alun High

School.

He always maintained a keen interest i n the county's h i s t o r y .

When he r e t i r e d to l i v e at Bryn Iorcyn i n 1964 much of h i s spare time was

spent c a r e f u l l y restoring that h i s t o r i c house. He also c o l l e c t e d over

the years an impressive array of old farm t o o l s . The major part of this

c o l l e c t i o n was given to Greenfield Valley Heritage Park to be displayed

at Abbey Farm.
