Seven arrested in black-tar heroin bust

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/06/07/1485255/seven-arrested-in-black-tar-heroin.html Six men and one woman have been charged in Charlotte with conspiring to distribute black-tar heroin, in a federal bust that netted about six pounds of the drug, according to a federal criminal complaint filed Monday. Agents also seized cash, cell phones and two handguns during searches of five homes and two cars. All seven suspects face federal charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute at least one kilogram of cocaine. A confidential informant told authorities that Rosario Delgadillo-Olivarez, 34, planned to meet a man Friday to give him heroin, an agent for Drug Enforcement Administration said in the complaint. Agents were watching as Roberto Aguayo-Camarena, 28, came and went from the woman's house on Fair Springs Road in east Charlotte, the complaint says. They followed him to his home at the Camden Forest Apartments and searched his car. Agents say they found about four pounds of heroin under the back passenger seat, rolled into 61 balls and wrapped in black electrical tape, according to the complaint.

They then searched the woman's house and found several ounces of heroin, the complaint says. Agents also tracked down and charged three men they said acted as "runners," delivering heroine to customers in small balloons, for about $12.50 a dose, the complaint says. Charged were Regino SalasCruz, Irvin Torres-Gonzalez and Jose Guttierez-Toledo. During the bust, Torres-Gonzalez told agents he'd flushed about a half ounce down the toilet when they arrived at his apartment, the complaint says. Agents reported seeing "empty balloons floating in the toilet" at his northeast Charlotte apartment. Two brothers Angel and Cesar Fernandez accused of supplying heroin were also arrested, the complaint says. After a brief car chase, authorities reporting finding heroin thrown from their car and in their hotel room, the complaint says. Black-tar heroin gets its name from its color and texture. Made from poppies primarily in Mexico, it's about half the price of other forms of heroin and experts say its impurities make it more dangerous.

Immigration agents arrest 5 men in Charlotte

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/06/17/1505612/immigration-agents-arrest-5-men.html In pre-dawn raids Wednesday, immigration agents arrested five Charlotte men suspected of being in the country illegally - including one they said had a significant criminal history. The sweep began after 5 a.m., when a half-dozen agents staked out apartments at two complexes. They were looking for two men who they said had drug and burglary convictions and were in the country illegally. Agents arrested one of their targets, and rounded up four others associated with the targets. One of those caught up in the sweep had previously been convicted of drunken driving and another of theft, and both had ignored previous deportation orders. agents waited for Santiago Villeda-Ramirez, who they say was convicted of drug trafficking in Idaho during the 1990s before being deported to Mexico. Agents never found their target, but they arrested two other men who lived in the apartment. One was the target's brother, Francisco Villeda-Briseno, who admitted to agents he was in the country illegally. Also arrested at the Pinetree complex on suspicion of being in the country illegally were Villeda-Briseno's other brother and his roommate. At the second raid, the Sailboat Bay Apartments off Albemarle Road, agents arrested Luis Antonio Fuentes, 30, as he got into a car with an acquaintance. Agents said they targeted him because he had been deported to El Salvador twice before, in 1998 and 2005, after burglary convictions in Texas. Agents also arrested the man driving the car. He's accused of having a fake ID card. ICE would only release the names of the two men they had targeted because agents consider them a public safety risk. The target's brother, Villeda-Briseno, consented to having his name released. All five men now face deportation proceedings.

Cocaine bust the biggest in decade

http://www.salisburypost.com/News/061810-cops-big-cocaine-bust KANNAPOLIS -- The Rowan County Sheriff's Office seized three kilograms of cocaine worth $150,000 Wednesday, the department's biggest cocaine seizure in more than a decade. Two people were arrested Wednesday evening in Kannapolis when authorities seized the drugs, concluding a multi-agency operation. The Sheriff's Office charged Jose Benitez Esquibel and Martin Nieto Perez with multiple felony drug counts. They are being held under $1 million bond each. The investigation, which was under way for several months, involved the Rowan County and Davie County sheriff's offices, the Kannapolis Police Department, the SBI and U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE). Capt. John Sifford said Esquibel is an illegal immigrant who has previously been deported as a felon. Around 8 p.m. Wednesday, an undercover officer met Equibel at a Kannapolis location to buy cocaine, according to a report. Officers took Esquibel into custody and located 1 kilogram of cocaine on the back floorboard of his vehicle. Investigators then went to Perez's residence at 820 Timberwood Lane, and located an additional two kilograms of cocaine, the report said. Sheriff Kevin Auten said Thursday the 3 kilos of cocaine is the most seized by the Sheriff's Office since a bust on April 21, 1999. In that instance, the Sheriff's Office, working with ICE, Salisbury Police and the SBI, arrested three people off Long Ferry Road. Auten noted it is unusual that no guns were seized in the arrest Wednesday night in Kannapolis. Usually with a cocaine bust that large, officers would find guns. Charges stemming from the arrests are: - Esquibel, 28, 1024 Canyon Lane, is charged with two counts of trafficking cocaine, two counts of possession with intent to sell cocaine, one count of conspiracy to traffic cocaine and one count of delivery of cocaine. - Perez, 25, of 820 Timberwood Lane, was charged with one count of trafficking cocaine, one count of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, one count of possession with intent to sell cocaine, and one count of maintaining a dwelling to store controlled substances.

Search warrant: Alleged kidnapper planned to kill girl

http://www.wbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=11242912 CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A search warrant reveals new information about a pair charged in an attempted kidnapping plot. Police say Ruben Garcia Rosario's plans were so advanced and detailed, he had a ransom note already written and photos of the young children who were targets of the alleged plot. According to a search warrant in which WBTV obtained Wednesday, Rosario told authorities he planned to kill the girl even if he got the money he needed to return to Mexico. The warrant also confirms that police officers found duct tape, rubber gloves, a gun and a ski mask in Rosario's vehicle. The 25-year-old was charged with two counts of first-degree attempted kidnapping, felony conspiracy and carrying a concealed weapon. Rosario's estranged wife, who lives in Texas, was also charged in connection with the case. Family friends of the children who were the target of the plot said the suspect planned to kidnap the two siblings, ages 7 and 8, in the Cornelius area and hold them for ransom for a six-figure amount. The suspect knew the two children because he had been hired through a sub-contractor several months ago to paint the exterior of the home where the family lived, a family friend said. The case was first brought to the attention of authorities in September when Cornelius Police were told the children were saying a man was watching them at a bus stop and taking photos from his car. The CMPD said they caught the suspect after receiving an anonymous tip. When cops arrested Rosario, they found the ransom note and pictures of the children on his cell phone. Rosario is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail on a $52,000 bond. Linda Gonzalez, who is Rosario's estranged wife, was taken into custody by the Edinburg Police Department, in Edinburg, Texas. Gonzalez was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit firstdegree kidnapping, police said. Police say Rosario is an illegal immigrant and was deported previously back to Mexico.
