Descendants of Josiah Sykes, Sr.

Generation No. 1 1. JOSIAH1 SYKES, SR. was born Bef. 1715, and died Bet. 23 May - 10 December 1812 in Bladen County, NC. He married ELIZABETH. Notes for JOSIAH SYKES, SR.: Josiah Sykes will, recorded in will book 2, page 311, Bladen County, NC: In the name of God Amen, I, Josiah Sykes being of perfect mind and memory blessed be God, do this 23rd day of May in the year of our Lord 1812 make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and following that is to say: I give and bequeath to my loving wife Elizabeth Sikes all my stock of every kind, household furniture and kitchen furniture, riding chair, plantation tools and all other movable property that I possess at this time to her heirs and assigns forever, also the plantation whereon I now live containing about two hundred acres, I give to my wife Elizabeth during her natural life. Secondly: I give and bequeath to Luke Sikes and his brother David Sikes sons of Josiah Sikes, Junr. the above mentioned plantation after the death of my wife Elizabeth Sikes to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Thirdly: I give and bequeath to the above mentioned Luke Sikes one shotgun to him and his heirs forever. It is my desire that my executors should sell one hundred acres of land joining the above mentioned plantation lying on the west side of Carvers Creek and the proceeds arising from such sale to be appropriated to the support of said wife Elizabeth. And I do hereby make and ordain my friend David Llyod my executor and my wife Elizabeth Sikes my executrix of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I the said Josiah Sikes have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the day and year above written. Josiah Sikes (seal) Signed, sealed and acknowledged in the presence of us: John Lucas, Jno. Russ

Josiah Sykes, Sr. died a few months after he made out his will. On 10 December, 1812, Elizabeth Sykes, his widow, deeded the homestead of 100 acres on the east side of Carver's Creek to Josiah Sykes, Jr. The deed notes that Josiah Sykes, Sr. is deceased. Elizabeth

relinquished all her right and claim "to the plantation whereon my husband formerly resided". Child of JOSIAH SYKES and ELIZABETH is: 2. i. JOSIAH2 SYKES, JR., b. 12 March 1740, Edgecombe County, NC; d. December 1832.

Generation No. 2 2. JOSIAH2 SYKES, JR. (JOSIAH1) was born 12 March 1740 in Edgecombe County, NC, and died December 1832. He married ELIZBETH PRIDGEN. Notes for JOSIAH SYKES, JR.: Josiah Sykes, Jr. died in December of 1832. Did he die on the trip to claim his pension? He applied for his pension on the 13 December, 1832 at the New Hanover County courthouse. On 1 January, 1833, Luke Sykes sold a slave, property of Josiah Sykes, to William Jones. The deed notes that Luke is the administrator of Josiah Sykes, deceased. From Lionel Melvin's book: In 1832, Josiah Sykes, Jr., applied to the Federal Government for Revolutionary Veterans pension and gave his age as being 92 years old on the 12th day of March that year. He also stated that he was born in Edgecombe County, NC. He signed with a mark, but to a deed he gave in 1813 to W. H. Beatty for land on Black River, he signed his name. It is possible that he was blind or so infirm in other ways that he was not capable at the age of 92 in signing. He was modest in declaring his war record. He minimized the importance of his part in the Battle of Moore's Creek and the Battle of Cowpens. The names of his brothers and sisters are not on record, but in his deposition for veterans pension, he mentions and older brother who migrated to Kentucky and took with him the family bible. He married Elizabeth Pridgen of Bladen or Duplin County, another family of long lived individuals. Elizabeth Pridgen was probably the granddaughter of a Matthew Pridgen who was reported in a Wilmington newspaper in the 1790's to have died on his plantation on Black River at the age of 105. Notes for ELIZBETH PRIDGEN: There are no official documents that name the wife of Josiah Sykes, Jr. Family tradition tells that he married Elizabeth Pridgen. Based on census records and deed records, it appears very likely that this is true. 3 November, 1813 Josiah Sykes, Jr. to Wm. H. Beatty - $293 - 3 tracts of land - 183 acres being part of a survey patented by Geo. Moore on 13 June 1750 and conveyed by him sd Geo. Moore to Moses Tyler and by him in his last will to his son Needham Tyler and by him to Luke Pryor and by him to Matthew Pridgen and from Matthew Pridgen to his 2 sons Jas. and Peter Pridgen and lower part from James Pridgen to Josiah Sykes...on west side of Black River near Pridgens landing. Wit: G. W. Bannerman, Will G. Beatty.

November term, 1814. J. S. Purdie, C.C. In the 1810 Bladen County census, Josiah Sykes, Jr. is living next to John, Matthew, and Peter Pridgen. Lionel Melvin's book states that according to family tradition, Josiah Sykes, Jr. married Elizabeth Pridgen. He speculated that Elizabeth was probably the granddaughter of Matthew Pridgen of Black River. Hall's Wilmington Gazetteer records that Matthew Pridgen died on 29 March, 1798 at the age of 105. Matthew's land was conveyed to sons Peter and James Pridgen. Lionel Melvin speculated that Matthew Pridgen was the son of Francis Pridgen of Chowan Precinct, NC. From "Kelly's of Frenches Creek" in a document titled "The Oldest Man" by Ronald Kelly is the following paragraph: Additional indication that William Pridgen was as old, or nearly as old, as he claimed comes from the belief of Mary Page that her great-great grandfather's wife was Sarah Pridgen, a daughter of William. This possible son-in-law of William Pridgen was Josiah Sykes who was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War and applied on December 13, 1832 for pension before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of New Hanover County giving his age as "ninetytwo" years on the fifth day of March last. Children of JOSIAH SYKES and ELIZBETH PRIDGEN are: 3. i. LUKE3 SYKES, b. 1797, Carver's Creek, Bladen County, NC; d. 1875, SykesSalter Place, Bladen County, NC. 4. ii. From Lionel Melvin's Book: Luke Sykes was remembered as a quiet, even-tempered man, much devoted to his wife and family. Notes for MARY ATKINSON: From Lionel Melvin's Book: Mary is said to have been sent to England for her education. She was a lady of culture with a great love of the poets of her time. Mae Sykes (a granddaughter) said that at the time of Mary's death, Mary quoted poetry all night long, some of which was thought to be her own. The Civil War brought much sadness to Luke Sykes and his wife Mary. Of their four sons, two were lost, and two came home. One of them who came home was wounded and the other was shell-shocked for life. Children of LUKE SYKES and MARY ATKINSON are: 5. i. CATHERINE ANN4 SYKES, b. 30 December 1823, Sykes-Salter Place, Bladen County, NC; d. 13 April 1911. 6. ii. Bet. 1840 - 1842, Sykes-Salter Place, Bladen County, NC; d. Abt. 1930, Orlando, Florida; m. ALBERT RINALDI, 20 October 1863, Bladen County, NC; b. 1831; d. Orlando, Florida. Notes for ANN SYKES: In the 1850 census, Ann Sykes was listed as 10 years old. In 1860, she was listed as age 18. From Lionel Melvin's Book: Ann died in Orlando, Florida in her nineties. She was said to have been the

most beautiful lady in the country. She was fond of literature and was a devout gardener, having turned the old Salter-Sykes home where she was born and raised into one of beauty which included a flower garden, rose garden, and a wide walk from the house to the highway lined with ornamental shrubs and flowers. She married Albert Rinaldi, a Bladen County merchant and veteran of the Civil War, who after marriage, moved them to Orlando, Florida. Albert operated a mercantile business and was for a long time mayor of the city. viii. HENRY MITCHELL SYKES, b. Bet. 1843 - 1845, Sykes-Salter Place, Bladen County, NC. Notes for HENRY MITCHELL SYKES: In the 1850 census, Henry Mitchell Sykes was listed as 7 years old. In 1860, he was listed as age 15. From Lionel Melvin's book: Henry Mitchell Sykes was a Confederate soldier at age 16. He was shellshocked for life. He died as an old man at Dorothea Dix.

4. DAVID3 SYKES (JOSIAH2, JOSIAH1) was born 21 December 1797 in Carver's Creek, Bladen County, NC, and died 08 August 1863 in Bladen County, NC. He married (1) MARGARET. She was born 24 August 1792, and died 10 March 1852. He married (2) ISABELLA. She was born Abt. 1810. Notes for DAVID SYKES: In the 1850 Bladen County census, David is age 52 and his occupation is farmer. Living in his household were Margaret, age 54, Thedore, age 26, and Mary, age 22. In the 1860 Bladen County census, David is age 62 and his occupation is farmer. Living in his household were Isabella, age 50, and Theodore, age 30. David's will was dated February 4, 1860. It was probated during the February term of 1864. He named his wife as Isabella. Since David's wife Margaret had died in 1852, we can assume that Isabella was a 2nd wife. His will also names Mary Ann Evans, wife of Jacob A. Evans. His son and executor was named as Thedore M. Sykes. Witnesses were T. D. Love, Sr. and J. B. Allen. The recording clerk was D. Blue. David was probably buried at Carver's Creek Cemetery. Notes for MARGARET: The epitaph on Margaret's tombstone reads: "erected as a tribute of affection by her husband". Children of DAVID SYKES and MARGARET are: 9. i. MARY ANN4 SYKES, b. Abt. 1828, Carver's Creek, Bladen County, NC.

ii. THEODORE M. SYKES, b. 16 May 1825, Carver's Creek, Bladen County, NC; d. 12 July 1911. Notes for THEODORE M. SYKES: From Lionel Melvin's Book: Theodore joined the Confederate Army when he was 16 and was commissioned Captain in Company H, 3rd Regiment. He became a doctor of dentistry after the war and settled in Columbus County, NC, where he died leaving his entire estate to his housekeeper (it has been said that she sued the estate to receive it). He is reported to have been a very fastidious person and required his man to carry him bodily to his carriage in order not to get his shoes dusty. He practiced his dentistry by traveling from one community to another. He was executor of his father's estate and entered in a bond of twenty thousand with J. M. Russ and Col. Thomas O. Brown as surety. Through some legal technicality, he was deprived of his inheritance. iii. CAROLINE ELIZA SYKES, b. 24 August 1832, Carver's Creek, Bladen County, NC; d. 16 October 1845. wounded in left arm/shoulder at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Report absent wounded until he was detailed for light duty in March - April, 1864. Reported absent on detail through February, 1865. From Lionel Melvin's book: John Wesley Sykes, like all three of his brothers served in the Confederate Army. He was wounded in the hard fought Battle of Fredericksburg and hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia, where his young wife, while expecting her first child, went and nursed him back to health. Years afterward, while attending a party in Chadbourn, NC, at the home of an old war comrade of his, his daughter Mae, was told by this comrade that in the thick of battle another comrade was wounded on the open battlefield and unable to seek safe cover, whereupon Sykes went out on the field and brought the wounded soldier back on his shoulders with enemy bullets in great numbers filling the air about him. In keeping with most war veterans, he seldom mentioned his battle experiences. He served throughout the war, but after Fredericksburg, he was assigned to a troop in Bladen County to hunt down deserters and bandits who were terrorizing the countryside. At one time, he was on the firing squad which executed one of the criminals. After the war, he lived out his life on the part of the SalterSykes estate left him by his parents, which included the old home built by the Salters. Notes for SUSAN ELIZABETH TATUM: From Lionel Melvin's book: Susan Elizabeth was a kindly lady who was always ready to help others in distress.
