"NEBOSH sets the global benchmark for qualifications in Occupational Safety and Health"

Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen OBE, President of RoSPA

New qualification in Health and Safety at Work

NEBOSH is pleased to announce the launch of our new pilot qualification The NEBOSH Award in Health and Safety at Work. This new qualification will benefit organisations internationally and within the UK who are seeking to implement a basic health and safety training programme as part of their workplace culture. It will ensure employees have an understanding of the principles of risk control reducing the numbers of accidents and incidents, resulting in costs savings for the business. This qualification also provides a perfect introduction to other NEBOSH qualifications including NEBOSH's International General Certificate and National General Certificate. The 3 day course covers the basic health and safety principles and practices essential in the workplace. These include: · Understanding risk assessments and control strategies; · Applying these control strategies to a number of common workplace hazards, including fire, electrical, transport and manual handling. For the first pilot phase there will be two examination dates which are 11 and 12 November 2009. A second phase of the pilot is due in February 2010. Further information on the qualification or how to become accredited to offer this qualification is available from our website.

West Anglia Training Association Ltd (WATA), based in Hartford, Huntingdon, appears to be bucking the economic downturn by opening its second new training building in 5 years. The `Refectory' was officially opened by the Rt. Hon. Jonathan Djanogly MP at a function attended by over 100 guests. At the opening WATA Managing Director, Andrew Christodoulou, said;" Today is a day to celebrate achievement and the opening of our new training building represents that achievement. WATA was formed over 30 years ago and since then we have trained and developed thousands of people and helped them to achieve. What we do here is important and we are proud of it."

Spotlight on `Alan Boyington'

I currently work as a Health and Safety Manager for a company called npower Cogen. It is my responsibility to ensure that the appropriate legal standards are in place and encompassed within a management system that meets the demands of a portfolio of sites across the UK and Ireland. I began my career as an Electrical Engineer in the Royal Navy where I worked for 6 years learning a trade and seeing the world. When I left the Navy I became a Telecoms Engineer for BT where I completed a BTEC Electrical Engineering qualification. My career progressed as I gained experience working in the Petro- Chemical Industry on the Humber estuary. This career path provided me with a wealth of experience, working across a wide range of blue chip companies. However, I felt I needed to build upon this experience with recognised qualifications. My interest in health and safety grew when I joined npower Cogen. The particular Combined Heat & Power plant I joined in Grimsby was just being commissioned and I got heavily involved in writing safe working procedures and establishing an Environmental Management System. Because of my previous experience as a Union Safety Representative and the fact I had moved into the role of Environmental Compliance Advisor, when the position of HS&E Manager became available I successfully made the step up. I had previously completed my NEBOSH National General Certificate which allowed me to

qualify for the role and helped me gain the sufficient knowledge I needed for the job. Subsequently, I have taken the NEBOSH National Diploma and was delighted to achieve a credit. I chose to take NEBOSH qualifications because they reflected my role and would give me a respected qualification known across all kinds of industries. NEBOSH is a well recognised organisation, instrumental in the prevention of industrial safety and environmental incidents world-wide. My NEBOSH qualifications provided me with the knowledge I needed in order to expand my skills further. I believe constantly improving and adapting is a vital factor in being successful, I would not be able to improve safety quality without expanding my own skill base! Consequently in the future I hope to develop in the areas of integrated risk management, including quality assurance and expand my knowledge of International Health & Safety law and management techniques.
