Farmers Field School on Backyard Colored Chicken Production

TITLE: Farmers Field School on Backyard Colored Chicken Production Area : Madongo, Sagada, Mountain Province RATIONALE:


Since time immemorial, 99% of the households in Sagada raise purely native chickens. These fowls are small and when only one head is butchered, it is not enough to feed a big family. Recently popular range or colored chicken like sasso and kabir was introduced. These birds are big and weighs heavy. Several farmers tried their best to raise these new breeds of chicken as alternative to the existing white breeds that are raised in cages. However, according to surveys, the lack of knowledge on the proper technology in raising these breeds and the non stop increase of inputs resulted to the poor adoption of the technology. In Madongo, Sagada about ten farmers tried these new breeds but were limited to raising only 5-10 heads. This is not enough to satisfy a family supply but still they stopped raising these chickens due to the limited knowledge on the proper technology. To intensify the technology and augment the resources that farmers have, this Farmer Field School on Backyard Colored Chicken Production was prepared.


OBJECTIVES: 1. To empower farmers to venture in colored chicken production.



Basically, the training was anchored on the principle of learning by doing. One hundred (100) day old chicks were delivered to the FFS participants. They decided to brood them in one place until it was ready for distribution among the four groups that were formed. Brooding was done for one month. After brooding, the chicks were equally distributed among the four groups, with 25 birds per group. There were two treatments conducted by the four groups. Groups I and III employed the first treatment while groups II and IV did the second treatment. The first treatment used the pure commercial way of feeding while the second treatment employed the semi-commercial method which is done by adding locally available feeds with the addition of fermented plant juice (FPJ) and indigenous

microorganisms (IMO) on the drinking water. These serve as a source of vitamins and minerals. The FFS on colored chicken production was conducted in Madongo, Sagada, Mountain Province, one of the CHARMP covered barangays in the municipality. The Local Government of Sagada spent for the FFS graduation expenses by providing meals of the participants and visitors. CHARMP provided the supplies and materials and the training service fees. The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and Office of the Provincial Veterinarian served as the resource speakers. The resource speaker was able to discuss the principles of incubation, its advantages and disadvantages which could be of great help to the farmers since they are into egg production.



The training started with 20 participants who attended the orientation on season long farmers field school. However, after five months only 15 participants finished the course. The five participants were so busy that they can't spare ten percent of their time for the training. The 15 graduates were able to internalize the basic technology in raising colored chicken thru the FFS scheme.

Regarding brooding, the participants learned not only the theory but they also experienced hands-on the brooding of day old chicks including the construction of the housing, the beddings, the provision of heat and the feeding scheme.

On the other hand, the Chicken Ecosystem Analysis, a weekly activity cultivated further not only their drawing skills but also their participatory Chickens fed with semi-commercial skills. Through this activity, they were trained to be


very observant, appreciate the works of others and they were able to overcome stage freight. Based on their observation, they found out that birds of the group that employed the semi-commercial way of feeding performed better in terms of uniform growth, faster weight gain and sanitation compared with the group that employed the pure commercial way of feeding. This is probably due to the fact that fermented plant juice and indigenous microorganisms aid in the metabolism processes in the birds. Based on the result as shown on the table above, after weighing the samples during the marketing stage T2 for both groups have higher weight gain of 1500 and 1750 than T1 for both groups with weight gain of 1040 and 1200 respectively.

Todyog, Rose 13 15 Average 12.9 14.6 Generally, based on the table above, there is an average increase of knowledge of the participants from 12.9% to 14.6%. * Three participants were not able to take the post test. After graduation each group divided the chicken among the members in order to continue practicing what they have learned. After the training, a mobile tour/lakbay-aral was conducted by CHARMP which provides opportunities for the farmers to visit existing organic poultry production projects in the Southern Tagalong Regions. After arriving from the lakbay-aral one FFS graduate, Mr. Eugene Bacagan was very much motivated with what he had seen and learned. He finally decided to put these into practice. He bought 100 heads of day old kabir chicks as his starting stocks. From this he was able to sell eggs and chicks to fifteen (15) interested farmers who also want to raise colored chickens. Aside from this, he expanded his project. From the knowledge he learned in brooding he is now making business. He buys day old chicks and broods them for 21 days after which he sells them to interested farmers. To date he still can't supply the demand of the other farmers.

After their graduation, an interview was conducted to determine the lessons learned and benefits derived from the FFS training including their experiences in managing their individual projects. Lessons learned: Technical aspects learned by the participants are the following: 1. Brooding of chicks, care and maintenance from brooding to fattening stage. 2. Feeds of colored chickens could be supplemented with locally available feeds like camote leaves, sayote leaves and fruits, palay, cooked rice, banana leaves and azolla. 3. Colored chickens grow faster twice as that of native chickens. 4. Incubation of eggs out of own chicken production project. Benefits derived: Benefits derived by the participants are the following: 1. Farmers were given supplies and materials for the farmers to start. 2. Available fresh chicken eggs in the locality. 3. Available colored chicks for sale in the locality 4. Available semi-organic chicken to be served in the restaurants in place of the broiler culls that are full of growth hormones which are hazardous to health. 5. Additional source of income for the farmers.

VII FUTURE POTENTIAL: The technology on colored chicken production could be adopted by farmers municipal wide.
