I DAAD FELLOWSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES

1. 1.1 PROGRAMMES FOR ACADEMICS FROM BANGLADESH Fellowships for Young Researchers and Recent Post Doctoral Scholars

Objective:

These fellowships are meant for advanced studies and research at universities and research institutes in Germany to enable young scholars, scientists and university teachers to broaden their knowledge in their fields, to give them an opportunity to carry out research in Germany, and to familiarize themselves with current methods of research there. Candidates who are working as teachers in universities or recognized institutes of university standard , and at research institutes of national importance in Bangladesh. Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy, contribution to health insurance, German language course, air-fare. Fellowships are awarded, initially, for one year preceded by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German language course in Germany, arranged and funded by DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation, they are extendable up to another 12 months. Beginning of April (6-month course) Beginning of June (4-month course) 1st October ­ 30th September of the following year.

Degree/Prior Work Experience: Candidates must possess a Master's degree with a first class at Master's or Bachelor's level plus at least two years of teaching or research experience; Age Limit: Candidates should not be more than 32 years of age on 1st October of the year in which the fellowship begins; Domicile: Candidates must be residing in Bangladesh at the time of application; Confirmation of Placement: Candidates must have a recent-dated letter of placement from a German professor; scholars need a written confirmation that states that their research plan is feasible at the selected German university/institute, and that placement for the duration of at least one year to carry out research would be available. The confirmation should not be older than 6 months; failure to obtain such prior agreement will disqualify the candidate from the competition for this type of fellowship.

German Language Skills: Candidates in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences must have a good knowledge of the German Language.

Note: Preference will be given to candidates who are permanently employed and whose employers undertake to re-employ them on return; exceptions will be considered on an individual basis. Sandwich Model Fellowships for Ph.D. Registered Scholars The "Sandwich Model" is a multi-phased fellowship scheme which allows scholars who are registered for their Ph.D. at a university/institute in Bangladesh, to carry out research for their thesis alternately in Bangladesh and in Germany under the supervision of a Bangladeshi as well as a German guide according to a schedule previously drafted out in consultation with them. Open to scholars registered for a doctorate degree in Bangladesh. Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy, contribution to health insurance, German language course, air-fare. Fellowships are awarded initially, for one year preceded by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German language course in Germany arranged and funded by DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation, they are extendable up to another 12 months. Fellowships for a Doctorate Degree in Germany These fellowships are for those who wish to get their doctorate degree from a German university or institute. Scholars with admission to a doctoral programme at a German university or institute. Monthly stipend, study and research subsidy, contribution to health insurance, Ger man language course, air-fare. Fellowships are awarded initially, for one year preceded by a two-to-six, most commonly four-month German language course in Germany arranged and funded by DAAD. Upon application and proper documentation, as well as evaluation of the candidates' work done in the previous year, they are extendable up to a maximum of 4 years (by which time the doctorate study should be completed). 3 ­ 4 years maximum

· Age Limit: Candidates must not be more than 32 years of age on 1st October of the year in which the fellowship begins; · Degree: A Master's degree, with first class at Bachelor's or Master's level; · Confirmation of placement: Candidates must have an admission letter from a German university/ institute to study for a doctorate degree/ must get confirmation from the German university/ institute stating that they fulfill the requirements to carry out doctoral studies there; · German language skills: Candidates in the fields of Humanities and Social Sciences must have a good knowledge of the German Language . Besides the core qualifications, · Candidates should have detailed correspondence with German guide regarding the topic of the thesis; · Candidates must be residing in Bangladesh at the time of application; · If field studies have to be done in Bangladesh, this should be clearly stated in the research plan; · Candidates must complete their studies within 3½ years (maximum 4 years); · Candidates must sign a bond pledging that they will return to Bangladesh after completion of fellowship period in Germany . Short-term Fellowships for Ph.D. Registered Scholars To enable scholars registered for a Ph.D. at universities or research institutes in Bangladesh to collect material in Germany for the completion of their doctoral thesis. Scholars registered for their Ph.D. at universities or research institutes in Bangladesh. Two to six months. Monthly stipend, contribution to health insurance, air fare.

Application Procedure: · These fellowships are announced once a year by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dhaka. · The announcement of the fellowships is made sometime in July/August. Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowship for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Students Fellowships for a Doctorate Degree in Germany These fellowships are meant to give scholars an opportunity to get their Doctorate Degree from a Helmholtz Centre in Germany. Young scientists and researchers from all around the world who are able to substantiate their excellent study or research achievements. DAAD scholarships for Postgraduate Courses with Relevance to Developing Countries for Professionals Objective: To give academically trained professionals in leading positions the opportunity to pursue postgraduate education and training in their particular field . Professionals in public administration, or in the public or private enterprise sector holding a four year Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree, and having at least two years of work experience in related field. Monthly allowance, language course, international air fare, contribution to health insurance. Beginning of April for courses conducted in German and beginning of August for courses conducted in English

Applications are invited in the fields of: Economic Sciences/ Business Administration/ Political Economics, Development Cooperation Engineering and related fields, Mathematics, Regional Planning, Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine and Education/ Social Sciences. Note: · From the large number of postgraduate courses offered by German institutions of higher education, the DAAD has selected a number of courses of particular interest to participants from developing countries. · Participation in these courses on DAAD scholarships cannot be used or changed into a Ph.D. degree programme from a German University. · The courses are open to eligible candidates with personal financial resources, as well as to those who are funded by their government, or who are recipients of financial support from international sponsoring agencies.

PROGRAMMES FOR FACULTY AND STAFF OF RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS/LABORATORIES Guest Lecturership at German Universities/"Gastdozenten an deutschen Hochschulen"

Objective:

To strengthen the international dimension of teaching in the German higher education system. Qualified full-time faculty from universities or research institutions/laboratories in Bangladesh. As a rule, the teaching assignment is for a period of one year; however, it should be for a minimum of one semester up to a maximum of two years. Air-fare, salary, allowances Eligible are those candidates who have an outstanding teaching and research record at universities in Bangladesh. At the time of application they must still be in active service.

Application Procedure: · The German institution interested in inviting a faculty member from Bangladesh to teach has to apply to DAAD Head Office along with the curriculum vitae and list of publications of the faculty member. · Applications have to be made by the Head of the Department, Dean of the Faculty or Vice-Chancellor of the German universities/institutes. · Direct applications from faculty members in Bangladesh are not acceptable. · Applications must be submitted to DAAD Head Office by German host universities/institutes between 15th June and 15th December. · It takes at least 4 months to select and process the applications. Only complete applications can be considered. The application will be assessed on the basis of a peer review of professors from German institutions of higher education. Note: · DAAD supports these long-term appointments in any field of specialization. · The courses, which are an integral part of the curriculum of the department in question, are to be taught in the incumbents' native language ­ or the language most commonly used in academic teaching in their home country ­ but in any event in a language other than German.

FOLLOW-UP PROGRAMMES FOR FORMER DAAD FELLOWSHIP HOLDERS FROM BANGLADESH Reinvitation Programme/"Wiedereinladungen" Research visits; visits to get acquainted with the latest developments in Germany. Former DAAD fellowship holders (duration fellowship : minimum one year) on active duty. 2 months Monthly allowance of

· Air-fare is to be covered by the Bangladeshi side. · Time Frame: At least three years must have elapsed since the applicant's return from Germany supported by a DAAD fellowship (of minimum one year duration). · Contact: Applicants should have remained in regular scientific contact with their counterparts in Germany after their return to Bangladesh. · Placement: Applicants have to submit copies of correspondence with their German counterparts ­ not older than 6 months ­ agreeing to the proposed research plan and the suggested time schedule. · Leave: Applicants must submit a certificate from their employers granting paid research leave for the duration of their visit. Application Procedure: Eligible candidates should send their applications for visits under the reinvitation programme to German Embassy in Dhaka by 15th October of the preceding year. Application forms are available August onwards. Note: · At least two/thirds of the stay should be spent at one particular institute. · Former Humboldt fellows should apply for revival of their fellowship or for a reinvitation to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

4.2

Grants for Books and Journals

Fellowship-holders from the area of German/German Studies are eligible for this grant if they have availed of the DAAD fellowship for 5 months or more. Former DAAD fellowship-holders (who have availed of a fellowship of more than one year's duration) may apply for donations of books or subscriptions to journals published in Germany; publications from elsewhere will be considered only in exceptional cases. The value should not exceed Euro 200 per year. Requests indicating author, title, year of publication and publisher should be submitted "online" at www.daad.de/alumnibuchspenden. 4.3

Equipment Grant To strengthen academic and scientific relations with foreign countries. The aim of this programme is to support teaching, research, development and consultancy services by providing materials and equipment to universities or comparable institutes in developing countries. Applications may be submitted by former DAAD grantees, permanently employed at universities or comparable academic institutions in their home country for grant of scientific equipment and other material related to a specific study or research project with practical orientation and being used for teaching and/or for a research programme. The maximum value of the equipment and material, including transportation from Germany to the port of entry, should not exceed Euro 20,450.

Note: · · · The grant will be made to the university or institute of the former fellowship holder. The recipient institutes must undertake to install, maintain, and repair the equipment at their own cost and to bear relevant fees accruing in Bangladesh. Whenever possible, a representative of DAAD and/or from the German Embassy should be invited to inaugurate the installation of the equipment on site.

4.4

Participation in International Conferences/Symposia in Germany Within the framework of the DAAD Re-invitation Programme, former DAAD grantees of one year fellowship schemes can apply for a grant for participation at international conferences/ symposia in Germany.

Objective:

Eligibility Criteria: · · Applicants must have been in active service for at least 3 years in their home university/institute since their return from Germany. Applicants should submit proof of active participation at the conference/symposium e.g. acceptance of oral presentation of a paper, invitation to chair a scientific session at the conference.

Financial Support: · · For conference participation DAAD grants a lump sum allowance. Applicants must confirm in writing that no other financial support is being received from any other funding agency (from the organisers of the conference or international funding agencies in Bangladesh/Germany).

Application Procedure: · Former DAAD grantees, planning to participate in international conferences/ symposia in Germany, in exceptional cases also in neighbouring countries, must apply well in advance under the DAAD Re-invitation Programme. Applications must reach German Embassy in Dhaka by 15th October every year for visits envisaged in the following year. 4.5

Support to DAAD-Alumni Associations for Academic Events To maintain contact with former grantees, working in institutions of higher education and research outside Germany

Objective:

Alumni Associations can apply for financial support from DAAD · · · · in finding suitable German speakers for conference for travel and subsidies for German speakers at a conference for travel and subsidies for DAAD alumni coming from abroad to participate in the events for funding towards the cost of an event

Eligibility: · · · The event must be an academic conference with participants from the academic sector. No funding is available for purely social events. Majority of participants must be DAAD alumni or beneficiaries of sur-place funding schemes. The association must be recognised according to national law.

Application Procedures: · Application should reach German Embassy in Dhaka at least six months prior to the event along with the following information: ­ description of the proposed event (provisional programme and list of participants) ­ detailed budget proposal (including information about possible grants from other sources)

5. FELLOWSHIP AND GRANT PROGRAMMES FOR GERMAN SCHOLARS 5.1 German Postgraduates, Doctoral Candidates, and Recent Post Doctoral Scholars/"Vertiefungs- und Kurzstipendien für Deutsche"

For further information on the profile of the scholarships, eligibility requirements, application procedures and deadlines, please consult the DAAD brochure "Studium, Forschung, Lehre ­ Förderungsmöglichkeiten im Ausland für Deutsche" which is available at all Akademische Auslandsämter of German universities and "Fachhochschulen" as well as from DAAD Bonn and from the internet at http://www.daad.de/ausland/de/3.4.html. Photocopies of relevant pages can be made available to interested candidates residing in Bangladesh ­ or to departments at universities in Bangladesh wishing to host a German scholar ­ by German Embassy in Dhaka, upon request.

5.2

German Guest Lecturership Programme/ "Gastdozenturen"

Visits of German professors and scientists (from any discipline) to universities and research institutes as short-term (1 to 6 months) guest-lecturers in all disciplines, with full-time teaching assignments according to the host universities' specifications and conditions, can be sponsored by DAAD. A financial contribution from the host universit ies is expected. Please note that it takes between 4 and 6 months to process complete applications.

5.3

German Teachers of German/ German Studies/ German as a Foreign Language/"Lektoren für die Deutsche Sprache", "Sprachassistenten" und "Praktikanten für Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF)"

5.3.1 "Lektoren für die Deutsche Sprache" For many years, DAAD has been assisting in placing German lecturers of German Language and Literature/German Studies at universities in Bangladesh, on a costsharing basis. These are universities where the Department of German or the German Section in a Department of Foreign Languages is particularly strong and, as a rule, has a Masters Degree as well as an M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. programme in German. Heads of Departments, Deans, and Vice-Chancellors may inquire for details at the German Embassy in Dhaka.

Note: Qualified German nationals may apply in response to public advertisements in the German media, and through DAAD Bonn only. Website : http://www.daad.de/ausland/de/3.3.3.html 5.3.2 "Sprachassistenten" "Sprachassistenten" are young German graduates of German/ German as a foreign language, sponsored by DAAD to teach German language and culture at institutes of higher education in Bangladesh. During their tenure of one academic year (9 ­ 10 months), they usually support a DAAD lecturer in his/her work. 5.3.3 "Praktikanten für DaF" German Departments or German Sections of Foreign Language Departments which need the assistance of native teachers of German, have the possibility of getting advanced and specially qualified student intern ("Praktikanten") through DAAD for 23 months. Their academic specialization from select professional institutes for second language acquisition in Germany is "German as a Foreign Language" ("Deutsch als Fremdsprache" ­ DaF). 6.

PRACTICAL TRAINING/INTERNSHIP FOR BANGLADESHI AND GERMAN STUDENTS To give an opportunity to Bangladeshi and German students to carry out practical training (internship) as a part of their on-going course of study. Advanced senior level students enrolled at a university/research institute. 2 to 6 months Students must cover their own air-fare; employer/host institutions pay nominal monthly allowance for living expenses. Candidates are expected to get in touch with institutions where they wish to go for training themselves, i.e. establish contact with appropriate employers and get the necessary letter of acceptance. Thereafter, they can write to German Embassy in Dhaka for necessary departure clearances. DAAD, in a very few cases, arranges placements for training in specified fields. Information on this can be obtained from German Embassy in Dhaka February onwards. Candidates should get in touch with local IAESTE committees.

7.

STUDY AND INFORMATION VISITS BY GROUPS OF YOUNG BANGLADESHI AND GERMAN SCHOLARS To give an opportunity to Bangladeshi and German students from all disciplines, to familiarise themselves with latest developments in their respective area of study, and/or with the current political, economic and cultural affairs in the host country, under the direction of an accompanying faculty member. Advanced-level students enrolled at a university/research institute; group of about 10 to 12 qualified participants, who have already established contacts with institutions of higher education. Visit for a week to maximum 2 weeks

Bangladeshi group funding: The international air-fare is to be paid by the Bangladeshi side. DAAD coordinates the local programme in Germany, provides an English speaking guide and extends local hospitality. German group funding: DAAD can extend support to the German group. Groups from Bangladesh should apply to German Embassy in Dhaka at least 6 months prior to the proposed visit. German groups have to apply through DAAD Bonn. II. ACADEMIC NETWORKING AND BANGLADESHI-GERMAN PROJECTS

INSTITUTIONS/DEPARTMENTS LINKS PROGRAMME / HOCHSCHULPARTNERSCHAFTEN Objective: To establish institutional and/or departmental links between educational institutions in Bangladesh and their German counterparts. These links are intended to enhance academic exchanges on all levels, help in developing joint curricula in areas of high priority to both partners, and to establish technology transfer centres in fields with particular relevance to global development German side covers the air-fare of German participants and local hospitality of participants from Bangladesh. Bangladeshi side covers the air-fare of participants from Bangladesh and local hospitality of German participants. Projects are deemed especially worthy of support if they are likely to lead to a long-term institutional connection, e.g. mutual recognition of diplomas or courses; furthermore, the establishment of joint postgraduate courses which are offered in segments at both partner universities; or joint development of new forms of teaching and learning. Direct application to the DAAD New Delhi Office or to the German Embassy in Dhaka for this programme is not possible. The German partner university must submit the application to DAAD Bonn. The final decision is taken by a special committee in Germany. The funding is intended to first and foremost support the exchange of senior and junior faculty members, postgraduate (Ph.D. students) between partner institutions.

ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT FOUNDATION (AvH)

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships Purpose: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) awards fellowships to young highly qualified scholars of foreign nationality for research projects of their own choice in Germany. The research fellowships are offered on a worldwide competitive basis. Scholars of all nations and all academic disciplines may apply for them. Up to 500 research fellowships are available per year. 6 ­ 12 months

Foreign scholars who hold an academic degree comparable to the doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) or have attained a comparable academic qualification through research and academic publications in internationally recognised academic journals. Applicants should be in a position to furnish proof of experience in independent research at a non-German university or research institute. They should submit, if available, recognised academic publications, preferably in international journals. Scholars in the humanities (including social sciences) should possess and have to prove sound German language abilities. Scholars in natural, medical and engineering sciences ­ if not native speakers ­ must possess and have to prove good command of English. Applicants should be under the age of 40 at the time of application. Monthly research fellowship rates range from Euro 2,100 to 3,000. Fellowship values are set by the Selection Committee. Research fellowships are exempt from taxation in Germany. A range of other expenses is also covered.

MAX PLANK SOCIETY (MPG) (through AvH)

The "Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Max Planck Society International Research Award" is granted through both organisations to internationally recognised foreign and German scholars enabling them to carry out long-term, project-oriented joint research over a period of three to a maximum of five years. The awards carry a maximum value of Euro 750,000. Nomination requirements: · Outstanding, internationally recognised research work. · Nominations may be made to AvH only by heads of German universities or parent organisations of non-university research institutes may nominate scholars from all disciplines to AvH. Note: Direct applications from individual scholars or research teams are not accepted.
