Step 7: If the user has more than 4 digital certificates listed, to avoid confusion you should remove any prior certificates that were used for digital signatures and/or VPN access. If you do this, the user will use their new smartcard digital certificates to perform this function. Inform the user of this option and ask if it is OK to delete their old certificate(s). If it is OK to remove the old certificates, click on the certificates with an expiration date that is different than the PIV Users expiration date (normally these will be the certificates with the earliest expiration date). Do NOT remove any certificates where the intended purpose is only Secure Email. For prior certificates where the intended purpose is Client Authentication and Secure Email (see below), click Remove to delete this certificate.

D. Publish Certificate to the GAL (as user)

For windows Outlook users that have no prior certificates (i.e., they only have the 4 certificates from the PIV card) perform the following steps to publish their certificates to the GAL enabling the user to immediately be able to receive encrypted email. Otherwise, please refer to the guides at http://ocio.nih.gov/pki/PKI_howto.htm on how to configure the Outlook. While recommended, this step is optional! There are some circumstance where this publish to GAL process might fail. This does NOT mean the software installation has failed, assuming Part C, Verify Installation, was completed successful. If this process does fail, please refer to the guides at http://ocio.nih.gov/pki/PKI_howto.htm for information on how to manually configure Outlook and publish the user's certificate to the GAL.

Step 1: Insert the user's smartcard into the smartcard reader and then right click on the ActivClient icon in the system tray. Step 2: When the ActivClient menu appears, click on Open.

Step 3: When the ActivClient screen appears, click on Tools, Advanced, then Publish to GAL
