LOCAL BUILDERS AWARDED CONSTRUCTION OSCARS

With the new homes industry facing the toughest market conditions in years, builders from across Scotland were given a reason to celebrate when they discovered they had won coveted construction industry `Oscars' in the regional heat of NHBC's annual `Pride in the Job' Awards.

Ten house building site managers from across the country have won `Seal of Excellence' Awards for building the best quality new homes and managing their sites to an exceptional standard, placing them amongst the top 100 site managers in the UK. From these winners, four Regional Award winners have been selected to go forward to compete in the national `Pride in the Job' grand final which will be held in London in January 2009: ·

Malcolm Scott, 32, from Lanark, works for Rockridge Construction Ltd and is the Regional Award winner of the small builder category. Malcolm has worked in the building industry for 14 years, starting out as an apprentice electrician, and has been with Rockridge Construction Ltd for over three years. Malcolm says that the most rewarding part of his job is when he hands the keys over to a satisfied new homeowner.

He says, "This award is a huge achievement for myself and my workforce. It makes all the extra work and effort to maintain high standards worth while and set the standard even higher for the future". ·

Les Duncan, 53, of West Kilbride, is a site manager for Mactaggart & Mickel Ltd and is the Regional Award winner in the medium builder category. Les has worked in the building industry for 36 years and has been working for Mactaggart & Mickel Ltd for 13 years. Les enjoys the day-to-day challenges of his role, including programming the work and motivating his team.

Les says, "I have managed to keep a constant high standard over the years and I am delighted to have been recognised for that." ·

Mark Foley, 38, of Edinburgh, is the Regional Award winner of the multistorey builder category. Mark has worked as a site manager for Cala Campus Ltd for 11 years. Mark enjoys the fact that no two days are the same on site and believes his strong organisational and leadership skills help him achieve the required results.

Mark is delighted to have won a Pride in the Job Award saying, "This year has been a challenging one. We have been working on a very complex development so winning this award has made it all the more worthwhile for myself and my site team." ·

Ian Ingram, 58, from Aberdeen, has won the Regional Award in the large builder category. Ian has worked in the building industry for 43 years and has been a housing site manager at his current company, Barratt North Scotland, for 31 years. Ian enjoys the challenges that different construction projects create and finds it rewarding to see them through to completion.

Ian says, "Winning this award gives me great personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement. It is a great honour that my work has achieved a standard that has been recognised by NHBC."

Now in its 28th year, NHBC's Pride in the Job Awards are only presented to site managers who have demonstrated outstanding levels of skill across 38 areas of site management, including technical expertise, quality control and health and safety.

The competition is rigorous with around 18,000 site managers across the UK entered into the awards. In addition, each site manger is assessed over 12 months to gauge an accurate view of how they manage their site and the overall quality and finish of the new homes.

Malcolm MacLeod, NHBC's Scottish Director, said: "The speed and severity of the current downturn has had a dramatic impact on the industry, not least the site managers who are responsible for managing and delivering quality new homes to buyers. This year, despite the considerable pressure on site managers, we are pleased to see that maintaining quality workmanship and service is still a key priority for so many.

"To win a Pride in the Job Award at this stage of the competition takes an exceptional level of commitment and hard work. Each of the winners is a tribute to the new homes industry and testament to the high standards that can be achieved."

NHBC is the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK. Established more than 70 years ago as a not for profit company, NHBC's primary purpose is to help raise standards in the new house-building industry and provide consumer protection for homebuyers.
