Dear Spelling Bee Coordinator, We are excited to announce improvements to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Spelling Bee! In March of 2006, the semi-finals will consist of a WRITTEN TEST FORMAT, rather than oral semi-final competition. The Final will remain the same - an oral spelling competition. We are adopting this format from the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Also, the 2006 semi-finals and the Final will be held at Maryville University! Please watch for an additional Spelling Bee mailing in October for more information on these exciting changes! THE PAIDEIA - THE SPELLING BEE STUDY SOURCE! Once again this year, we will be able to offer the Paideia study guide to all students K-8 in the St. Louis area at no cost, thanks to St. Louis Children's Hospital. The Paideia is a listing of all words that will be used at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee and the Scripps Howard National Bee. The Paideia will be in the Tuesday, October 18, 2005, edition of the Post-Dispatch.* The Paideia will only be available in editions of the newspaper delivered directly to schools and must be ordered in advance through the Newspapers In Education department. We encourage you to order one copy of the Post-Dispatch containing the Paideia for each student participating in your school's spelling bee. ADDITIONAL SPELLING PREPARATION In addition to offering the Paideia at no charge, we will also run a weekly Spelling Bee Activity Page every Friday, October 28, 2005, through January 27, 2006, in the Post-Dispatch, featuring spelling words from the 2006 Paideia.** These activities have been designed to help students familiarize themselves with the Paideia while preparing for the Bee. Each week a different group of activities will help students tackle various word lists in a fun and challenging way. This year, coordinators may receive classroom sets of newspapers containing the Spelling Bee Activity Page AT NO COST! HOW TO ORDER If your school is interested in receiving FREE copies of the Post-Dispatch on October 18 containing the Paideia for your students, and/or the FREE Spelling Bee Activity Page on Fridays, please complete the enclosed order form and return in the reply envelope.
