A Word from the Chief Pastor

The Acts of the Apostle record . . . And then they prayed . . . as you are aware these words were referring to Paul and Silas while they were imprisoned. In the midst of these conditions of being humiliated and beaten, the jailer added to their sufferings by thrusting them into the inner prison and putting their feet in the stocks. He then went about his business and finally went to sleep for the night. What a wonderful and meaningful testimony. And then they prayed. It was also at that moment that God went to work and shock the prison so that all the prisoners were released. The power of prayer has witness after witness as to its effectiveness. Nothing is more important. There's no peace or power without it. But with it, our ability to love and understand people is increased. Our problems shrink and we can tackle opportunities with excitement. Most of all, we can fulfill the reason we were born: to know and love God. I invite you to join me in the intentional effort to raise our consciousness about prayer by praying with us each and every Friday at the hour prescribed. Join us in at least 12 hours of prayer. Pray with us on the hour. We ask that you pray with us on the subject outline, and feel free to continue your communion with God as the spirit leads. It s our hope that as we pray together we will experience God's amazing revelation so that generations yet unborn will say of us "And Then They Prayed." Finally, I expressed our gratitude to all the persons who contributed to the production of the volume. I remain,

PRAYER MANUAL PREFACE

A great theologian once said that he had so much to do in a day that was compelled to spend two hours in prayer. Unlike him, for many of us, the busy-ness of life leads us to spend little if any time seeking God's presence in prayer. Our prayers have become perfunctory, obligatory words in passing over meals or on our way to next the appointment. Or, we have become like a child who has left home, we call on God only to say "gimme" or "help me." As the Church, our corporate prayer lives suffer at times from high volume and low content, save for lofty pieties and traditional God-speech. Corporately our prayers have become about us, me, my and mine, and not about the Jesus to whom we call. Yet authentic prayer, both corporately and individually, is vital to developing and maintaining a relationship with God and to connecting with God's people. Through prayer, we stand in agreement with God and with each other. With united hearts, we create a community of faith that is attuned to our God and attuned to one another. This book of prayers, created especially for the Ninth Episcopal District of the AME Church, is designed to help bring the community of faith back to its knees and into the arms of our first love, our Creator, Redeemer, Comforter who loves us and even calls us "friend." Join us in this atmosphere of continual prayer. HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL The discipline of prayer is one that is too often neglected. For many, the idea of prayer is simply a portion of Sunday worship that generally runs too long, grace over meals, and a quick plea that nothing bad happens to us while we sleep. Add to that the deep pleading prayers that we offer when we find ourselves in dire situations and you have a model for the prayer life of the modern Christian. Certainly, this is not meant to suggest that every Christian possesses this kind of attitude toward prayer, but many of us- even the most devout, and even preachers!!- find ourselves fitting into this description at some point in our lives. It is interesting to note that in the New Testament, whenever Jesus refers to prayer, he does not say, "If you pray...", but "When you pray..." This simple distinction is quite crucial because it says that prayer is expected to be a regular aspect of your life. Something that is regular must become second nature at some point. And something that is second nature is integral- it is so intertwined that it cannot be removed without causing major damage. We wish to return to the discipline of prayer so that it becomes a truly integral part of our lives- as integral as breathing and eating. In doing so, we seek to return to our first love- those things that first drew us toward the One who first loved us, the One who best loves us. WHY A PRAYER MANUAL? WHY NOT A DEVOTIONAL GUIDE? Well, these might seem like mere words used to describe the same thing. But think about it for a moment: while a guide might point you in the direction of something, or provide a map, a manual will be more detailed and will have specific instructions. We wish to be clear, direct, and intentional in the discipline of prayer. We do not wish to leave any room for confusion or doubt. And we want to be on one accord with all of the saints who have committed themselves to the discipline of prayer.

In accepting this prayer manual, you have accepted the great responsibility of joining with the saints in the spiritual discipline of prayer. You have made the decision to connect in faith and purpose with the members of the body of Christ who have similarly chosen to commit themselves to prayer and meditation over the areas of our lives for which we have neglected to seek the Lord's blessing, favor, direction, or even companionship. It is our hope that you take seriously the commitment that you have made. The instructions included here are meant to ensure that we are indeed on one accord as we bring before God the cares and concerns, the joys and delights of the lives that we have been given by God to live. This manual covers twelve prayer areas. There is one prayer indicated for each of the twelve areas on each prayer day. Every Friday, beginning at 6:00 am, we will begin with the first prayer. We will spend the first seven minutes of the hour praying the words of the printed prayer, and meditating upon the area of life that that prayer highlights. At 7:00 am, we will spend the first seven minutes of the hour praying the words of the second prayer, and meditating upon the area of life that that prayer highlights. We will continue in that fashion until all prayers for that day have been prayed. We will follow this schedule on every Friday of every week throughout the year. Certainly, not everyone will be able to follow the schedule of prayers beginning at 6:00 am. There are some whose days begin much earlier than that, and others whose days begin much later. Some work 2nd or 3rd shift and their daily routines may not allow for the kind of adherence to the schedule we have outlined. This should not be a deterrent to participating in the vigil of prayer. You should pick up on the schedule of prayers wherever you can. The important thing is that we are all praying during the first seven minutes of every hour. If you enter the day on the 3rd prayer hour, you should begin with the 3rd prayer, and then return to the two prayers that you missed at the end of your day. In this way, we will all be praying the same prayers at the same time for the bulk of the day.

Example:

6:00 6:07 AM 7:00 7:07 AM 8:00 8:07 AM 9:00 9:07 AM 10:00 10:07 AM 11:00 11:07 AM 3:00 3:07 PM 4:00 4:07 PM 5:00 5:07 PM 6:00 6:07 PM 7:00 7:07 PM 8:00 8:07 PM

Prayer for a Closer Walk with God Prayer for the Church Prayer for the Black Man Prayer for the Black Woman Prayer for the Family & Children Prayer for Health and Healing Prayer for the Healing of the Land (Ecology) Prayer for Pharaoh & Caesar (Civic and Political Process) Prayer for Abundant Life & Prosperity Prayer of Nehemiah/Rebuild the Wall (Community Development) Prayer of Solomon (Wisdom, Learning & Education Prayer for Justice and Mercy (Social Justice)

If you begin with prayer at 6:00 am, you will conclude with the final prayer at 5:00 pm. However, if you begin with prayer at 9:00 am, you will begin with the prayer that is appointed for that hour- in this case, the Prayer for the Black Man. Once you have reached the end of the list, you will continue on with the prayers at the top of the list that you missed.

Dear heavenly Father I come to you as humble as I can, thanking you for your grace and mercy. Lord I need your help daily to keep me focused on doing those things which are right and good in your sight. I pray that Your will is my will. O God, you have called out from among the body of Christ, individuals to serve as leaders. We understand that everyone cannot lead at the same time. We understand, Lord, that the leadership is only as effective as the followership. I pray now for Godly leadership. I pray for leaders who are grounded in your word, who are faithful to you and to your calling in their lives. I pray for leaders who are humble, and who understand that leadership is not about always being right, nor about simply looking the part, but about being obedient to you, being true to themselves, and about loving those whom they lead. I pray for the lay leaders in our church. I call them by name: (call names here). Lord, please raise up good leaders for your church. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen. Reverend Jermaine Richardson

Dear God, You put us in families so that your love would be shown through us. You put us in families so that our children would be protected. Yet, oh God, far too many children live in homes that are unsafe, where they are violated and neglected. Far too many of our children are forced to be separated from their families and placed in a system which, at times, further harms our children. Lord, help us to support our families through policies and actions that allow families to live decently, to provide healthy starts for our children socially, educationally and spiritually. And when circumstances require children to be separated from their birth families, guide those in the foster care system- judges, attorneys, caseworkers and foster parents- to act in the best interest of your children. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42: 1 5 Reverend Mashod Evans

6:00am Closer Relationship with God

Heavenly Father, I come in the name of Jesus, seeking a closer walk with Thee in my daily life. I find myself living in some difficult days. Sin is all around me and sometimes I feel that You are far from me and I need to close the gap. Help me to draw nearer to Thee in prayer, meditation, and the study of your Holy Scripture. Teach me what to say in prayer and on those occasions when I find it difficult to speak, let the Holy Spirit speak for me. Help me take the time and energy that is required to study and carefully meditate on Your Holy Scriptures and in so doing I will walk closer to You each day. For it is all in the mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen Brother Clifton Miller

Dear God, in your holy scriptures, we read of the works of faith of many women who were of great service in the early beginnings of the church. We know for everyone of those women that were called by name, there were countless others besides them, providing assistance in the work of building your church. Lord, I thank you now for stewardesses, who fill the roles that those early church women filled. I pray your covering over them as they serve in worship and aid the stewards of our church. I pray that you would renew their strength as they give stewardship over the elements of worship. I call out to you the names of the stewardesses of our church: (call names here). Bless and keep them is my prayer, in Jesus' name, Amen. Reverend Jermaine Richardson

God, You have made us free, not simply as citizens of this nation but as citizens of Your kingdom. We praise You for the freedom we have because of Christ Jesus. He served the sentence we had been given, his suffering has paid the penalty for our transgressions and his execution, atoned for our sins, and for that we are grateful. Help our brothers walk into the freedom that You have granted them. We pray for those brothers who are bound by sin and self, and ask that You would empower us with the unfettered presence of the Holy Spirit, to lead others to the liberating knowledge of Christ Jesus. Reverend Mashod Evans

Heavenly Father, this is the day that you have made and I rejoice greatly in it. I come before your presence right now Father, seeking your blessing upon all of your daughters in the way; those who have accepted your call and are diligently carrying out your commandments. Continue to light their paths and guide their footsteps. Continue to dwell within them that they may rightly interpret your word and impart the same. For the race will not be given to the swift, but to those daughters who endure to the end. With humility of spirit I offer this prayer in the Savior's name. Amen. Reverend Mary C. Garrett

6:00am Closer Relationship with God

Dear Lord, I seek a closer walk with Thee, the Great I Am, the Comforter in a time of storms and great Redeemer. Lord, we often take for granted all that you have done for us. We often don't even remember to thank you for the many blessing that you have bestowed upon us, or even open up our Bibles to read your word. From the top of our heads to the bottom of the soles of our feet, you work your miracles and then we still can not see the works that you are doing in and around us. We go to bed and wake up taking for granted the miracles that you have done for us, because we definitely do not have control of anything. Only by your grace and mercy do we breathe your fresh air of breath that you give us each second of the hour, and we take for granted the warm flow of blood running through our veins. Oh Lord, how I pray that we all consider taking a closer walk with you and take a deeper look at the miracles that you perform for us each day. We thank you Lord. These blessings we ask in Jesus name, we pray, AMEN. Sister Angeline Brownlow

I pray for those church members who make up a very small minority within a religious majority that grows less and less friendly toward them with each passing day. O God our heavenly Father, we thank thee for this golden privilege to worship thee, the only true God of the universe. We come to thee today, grateful that thou has kept us through the long night of the past and ushered us into the challenge of the present and the bright hope of the future. We are mindful, O god, that man cannot save himself, for man is not the measure of things and humanity is not God. Bound by our chains of sins and finiteness, we know we need a Savior. We thank thee, O God, for the spiritual nature of man. We are in nature but we live above nature. Help us never to let anybody or any condition pull u so low as to cause us to hate. Give us strength to love our enemies and to do good to those who despitefully use us and persecute us. Keep us, we pray in perfect peace, help us to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all God's children, Black, White, Red, and Yellow will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the kingdom of our Lord and of our God, we pray. Help us to know that we cannot do it all and yet to be faithful in the homes, communities, and churches to which you've called us. Father, for so long, it was believed that all black women were lazy, uneducated, poor, and did nothing but have babies for the welfare system to take care of. With the spirit of love, let us know that instead of bias views we can be noted for our success, talent, strength, power, dignity, and love for God. Give us the courage to strive to be the best at our chosen goals. Teach us to put you first in everything we do. Nehemiah/Rebuild the Wall (Community Development)

Dear Father, we are thankful for this opportunity to touch many lives through the rebuilding of the church. May we, as a church body, also be rebuilt in our hearts, as the church is being rebuilt physically in structure, and spiritually in the drawing of new souls to the congregation. Father, thank you for giving us the great administration of Nehemiah as an example of how to reconcile a scattered people to your will during times of turbulence. Like Nehemiah, there are people in Huntsville and currently in the St. John congregation who are homesick for the Jerusalem that they have never seen, true fellowship and worship with the most High God. We are thankful for the opportunity to be able to prepare a place where souls are renewed, restored, and enlivened with the Holy Spirit. May the fruit of the Spirit, found in the hearts of the congregants, be a light that attracts all souls to You. We pray that our hearts are tender to Your Voice, and that the new church represents the overflowing presence of God. In Jesus name we pray, Amen. Sister Lauretta Teague

Black Men

Lord, help us to realize that a good man is honest, lives his life with integrity, and behaves responsibly. A good man loves You and his fellow humans on this Earth. Sometimes words like " macho" or "cool" are used to describe a "man", but truly being "macho" or "cool" means going anywhere with courage, integrity, and perseverance. All of those define a good man. A good man is not defined by what he has be that money, cars, or girls. A good man is ultimately defined by what he does. In Jesus' Name - AMEN Brother Hill Harper

Holy Father, you who were and are to come, the Almighty, El Shaddai, Elohim, Allah, Jehovah, Great Spirit, Jesus, God whatever name we call you we know you will answer. And even with all your historical names, your amazing attributes have brought us a mighty long way. Some of us have known you as a bridge over troubled waters when hate seemed to cause waves of confusion, misunderstandings and chaos. Some of us, have known you to be a mind regulator when we for sure would have lost it; between rocky relationships, hostile homes, financial fiascos, work weariness, being held hostage to health challenges, while balancing the ambiguity of life. As women seeking a closer walk on this journey of faith, we have known you to be a Heavy Load Sharer, the place where we could find relief from our burdens. For some of us you have been a Healer, binding up the wounds of our mind, body and soul. For some of us you have been our Sustainer. When we felt like giving up, you kept us in perfect peace. For some of us, we have known you to be a Deliverer. You guided us from all that is evil and made our enemies our footstools. For some of us, you are the best friend indeed, never too busy to hear our prayers. We've known you to be our Rock in a weary land. During moments when we were conflicted, confused, crying, convinced, convicted, contrite, you vested power in each of us to go forth to make a difference, to be different, to accept differences, and in the fullness of time, you called us by name as women who dared to be like Jesus the Christ. Thank you for this rich experience. Amen. Reverend Karla Cooper, M.Div
