Padmashree Nalini Ranjan Mohanty Class of 1965, B.Sc.Engg., Mech. Ex-CMD, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bangalore Aug 4, 2008

Born on 08 November, 1944 at Cuttack, Orissa, had his primary and secondary education in Cuttack. He took his Engineering Degree from the prestigious Regional Engineering College at Rourkela and was the topper in Mechanical Engineering discipline. Soon after passing out, he started his career as a Lecturer in the same College and made a mark for himself. In the year 1965, he stood second in the All India Engineering Services Examination and joined the Indian Ordnance Factory services. He joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in 1971 and worked in various capacities in the planning and manufacturing of aero engines and aircraft and steadily rose to become the Chairman of HAL w.e.f. 01 September, 2001. After retirement from HAL, he is now working as CMD, Textron Ltd, Bangalore and associated with various other organizations including NALCO, Bhubaneswar as its Independent Director. Mr. Mohanty has a keen analytical mind and has used his understanding of technology to bring about dramatic improvements in the operations of HAL and the Indian Aerospace Industry. Up-gradation of Investment Casting Technology for manufacture of Nickel-base Turbine blades for Aero-engines is another example of his innovative thinking. While keeping abreast with the developments in other international aviation industries, Mr. Mohanty has continuously guided and motivated the young engineers to improve the existing technologies and innovate new technologies to improve quality and productivity. Mr. Mohanty is a rare combination of an able technocrat who is also a great motivator and a futuristic thinker. His competence in man management which he has demonstrated at various times, was chiefly responsible for his elevation to the post of Director (Personnel) of HAL. He was the first technical officer to be appointed to this post. During his tenure of four years in this post, he maintained cordial industrial relations by his fair and firm handling of labour and made significant contributions in development of Human Resources. To motivate the employees, he introduced a performance based incentive scheme which has substantially increased the labour productivity and ensured uniform rate of production throughout the year. An exceptional human being, Mr. Mohanty's contribution towards the upliftment of the underprivileged in the society has been exemplary. While serving as General Manager of the Aero-engine factory at Koraput (one of the most backward districts in India), he selected quiet a few tribal boys from the area and trained them in various trades in HAL's

Apprentice Training School and appointed them as regular employees of the factory. Today besides being self-reliant, the boys have developed into highly skilled operators, producing sophisticated and dose tolerance aero-engine parts including turbine and compressor blades made out of super-alloys. During his tenure in Koraput, he adopted six surrounding tribal villages and provided them with free medical aid. A true gentleman, Mr. Mohanty has arranged for training and provided employment to some of the widows of the pre-maturely deceased employees. An outstanding Manager, Mr. Mohanty is a member of many prestigious and renowned forums of the country. He is a Fellow of Institute of Engineers (India) and a Fellow at the Aeronautical Society of India. He has also served as the Vice-President of the Aeronautical Society of India and is the President-elect. For his outstanding services and customer focus, he has received many commendations from the Indian Air Force including that from the Chief of Air Staff. Mr. Mohanty was conferred recently with the "Indira Gandhi Sadbhavna Award" and the "Rashtriya Ratan Award" for his outstanding individual achievements and distinguished services to the Nation. He has also been honoured with prestigious Padmashree Award of Govt. of India. Mr. Mohanty is a true visionary and a man of impeccable integrity, leading the aerospace giant of Asia by example and fortitude. He has been responsible for putting HAL firmly among the leaders in the World Aviation Industry. He is a rare combination of a remarkable manager, a competent technocrat and a socially aware human being. ******
