Perennials and Annuals for Honeybees

JCBA is proud to announce our first annual plant sale. This year we have decided to offer both low maintenance annuals and perennials used for water conservation gardens. These plants are unmatched as attractants to bees and other pollinators. Starting mid-summer until frost these plants will provide a source of nectar and pollen when others have stopped. We are offering a pre-sale of these great garden delights for your convenience. Hope to see you there, and please check out for all the needed details about the NJBA Spring Meeting as we approach the date. Bill Eisele, President of the Jersey Cape Beekeepers Association.

Black & Blue Salvia (Salvia guaranitica) The flowers are numerous beak-like electric blue flowers line upright black stems. The flowers open from black buds and have black sepals just below the petals. The black stems set off the blue flowers very well. The foliage is a vivid green and emits a very light anise scent when brushed. The growth habit is upright and bushy to 2 to 5 feet

and does well in average soil in full sun to part shade. Salvias can tolerate drought, heat and humidity once established. Deadhead to encourage more flowers. Salvias are grown as an annual outside of Zones 8 to 10 and can be wintered indoors in a bright and cool room elsewhere. This plant is attractive to

bees, butterflies and/or birds and blooms the whole summer into autumn. Available in 6" pots only. Profusion Zinnia: (Zinnia angustifolia var. profusion) An All-America Selections winner this annual has a height of 12-18 inches and should be spaced between 6-9 inches apart. Profusion Zinnias bloom incessantly from June to September and are resistant to heat and mildew. Plants are semi-upright in habit, spread to 24in across, and have 2-3in flowers that do not require deadheading. 2011 Year of the Zinnia by the National Garden Bureau. Available in 4" pots only. Cleome (Cleome hassleriana) Cleome, a member of the caper family gets its nickname "Spider Flower" from the spidery-like flowers with long, waving stamens which are held on tall, strong leafy stems. It is one of the few annuals that looks at home among shrubs and perennials. Planted in mass, they look like blooming shrubbery with an 8-inch ball of blossoms. They will reach a height of 6 feet in a good season. Cleome does well in full sun to light shade and tolerates heat and dry weather well continuing to look good through the summer. Available in 6" pots only.
