The first batch of New Orleans eviction cases filed since Hurricane Katrina will be tried today at the Algiers courthouse, 225 Morgan St. Petitions to evict tenants living in Algiers will be heard by Second City Court Judge Mary KK Norman beginning at 10 a.m. Starting at 1 p.m., First City Court Judge Charles Imbornone will take up eviction requests from owners of property on the city's east bank. Eviction lawsuits began being filed last week in southeast Louisiana after Gov. Kathleen Blanco's Sept. 6 order banning landlords from evicting renters affected by the hurricane. Last week, Civil District Court Judge Kern Reese ordered that all Orleans eviction hearings be held at Second City Court in Algiers. First City Court has been moved temporarily to Gonzales. Reese's ruling came in response to a lawsuit that claimed holding New Orleans eviction hearings in Gonzales would put an undue burden on tenants.
