an overview

introduction

eLearning is an extremely efficient way to train and learn. NSL eLearning allows individuals to learn at their own pace, to pause at any point to take notes from the on-screen course notes or stop at a convenient part in the course, then return to it at a later date. Courses can be custom designed for individual companies by adapting one of the existing NSL courses, by taking a course the company has in place already and developing it for online delivery, or by creating brand new bespoke courses.

Cd delivery

Where internet access is not available, we can deliver eLearning courses on CD. These discs can be distributed directly to the learners or to their administrator. Each disc contains the names and login details of the preregistered learners.

Courses available

· Rigging&LiftingSafetyAwareness · AnIntroductiontoLOLER · InjuriestoFingers&Hands · OGUKCargoHandlingGuidelines Module1:GeneralCargoHandling · OGUKCargoHandlingGuidelines Module 2 : Transport of Dangerous Goods&WasteManagement · WorkingatHeight · SafeUseofHandGrinders · Falls&FallingObjects · TransportationofDangerousGoods · TransportationofDangerousGoods By Air · ConfinedSpace/VesselEntry · SafeCargoHandling · OfficeSafety We can also build custom courses to suit any training programme or induction process.

take full Control

Our Learning Management System (LMS) gives you full control of your learners' training. The Administration area lets you fully manage your learners' online training requirements from any computer with internet access.

online delivery

If you have internet access, the web is by far the easiest and most efficient way to deliver and manage our eLearning. Both administrators and learners have full control via the web. Administrators can add new learners and assign courses from any computer with internet access. Broadband is preferable for learners, but if access speeds are slow, audio can be switched off to dramatically speed things up.

Courses are broken down into a series of short parts, each ending with a selection of test questions. All the information required to answer the questions can be found within the slides.

Will i require any special equipment or software?

No. All you need is a computer preferably, with internet access.

Can i access my course from other locations?

Yes. Our eLearning can be accessed from any online computer; whether onsite, offshore, in the office, at home, or in our eLearning Suite where courses are conducted in a controlled environment.

how long will it take to complete a course?

The duration of courses will vary depending on several factors; how quickly you take in the information, course subject, etc. As a guide, 2-4hrs should be enough time for most courses.

What are credits?

administrators' questions

how much does it cost?

Cost depends on the quantity of credits purchased. Prices start at £40 per credit and are reduced as quantities increase.

Courses are bought as "Credits". One credit = one course. When a course is assigned to a user, one credit is deducted from your account. You can add as many users as you like, credits will not be deducted until courses are assigned.

other costs?

There are no other costs for NSL eLearning courses. We do not charge for storing course and learner data, administering learners, adding learners, or generating certificates. Once you've purchased your credits you will have free access to our Learning Management System.

nSl learning Management System?

Our online LMS will allow you to add new learners, assign courses to them, check their progress, view their course history and print certificates.

Customising & building courses?

Our in-house team of Designers and Technical Authors can easily adapt our courses or develop new courses to suit your training requirements.

your online Safety resource

What is the eBook library?

Simply put, it's all of NSL's industry standard safety awareness handbooks made available to you for online access. One major advantage of online books is the ability to search the entire contents of the books using keywords. Enter your search, then jump through the books to find exactly what you're looking for. Many of the useful tables contained in the books are available for downloading and printing. The eBooks are regularly updated with relevant safety and legislative information. Our eBooks are not downloadable, but accessed online. This means you always have access to the latest revision of the book. Access is licensed by the number of "Concurrent Users" you require. This allows a fixed number of users access to the eLibrary at a given time.

eBooks available in the library are:

Technical Director's Statement

Our custom-built UK training centre is still one of the busiest, if not the busiest, training centre specialising in training for the offshore oil and gas industry. We have retained / renewed all our approvals granted by various national and international training and award bodies such as EMTA Awards Ltd (EAL), IRATA, API (the American Petroleum Institute) and OPITO. We are still actively participating with industry work groups such as IADC, Oil and Gas UK, IMCA and OPITO to raise standards and provide dedicated training courses and support materials to improve the skills of the Oil and Gas Industry workforce and hence improve safety overall. As part of our continual development and improvement of facilities at our training centre, we have just completed the installation of a "mini derrick" and dedicated man-riding winch to facilitate practical training in this discipline. It also increases our scope to provide rescue from height and other general work at height training. Our thanks go to Thern Lifting Services Ltd for providing the state-of-the-art winch, which can only improve safety in manriding operations as we know them in the offshore Oil and Gas Industry. This is achieved quite easily by discussing the contents of the logbooks (performance criteria), deleting anything that is not relevant and adding in anything extra that you do practice to enhance safety. That way, the competence process becomes an accurate reflection of the way you do things and gives you the chance to identify any shortfalls and thus make improvements. Finally, ifyouhaveaspecificproblemwithyourownlifting operations, giveusacallandI'mconfidentwecanassist. Once again, because we know that "one size DOESN'T fit all", all of these programmes can be customised to suit your particular type of business and your particular type of installation or vessel.

proving Competence:

NSL has really got to grips with competence issues and have developed many competence programmes with varying levels of ability designed to match the requirements of the various jobs involving lifting operations. Logbooks have been created for all these programmes, which facilitate the recording of experiences against the agreed performance criteria. These competence programmes reflect the HSE's thinking where the competence levels should match the requirements of the job, i.e. the performance criteria is totally relevant and competence can be achieved in an acceptable time frame.

Competence In rigging & Lifting Operations

COMPeTeNCe

Competence programmes

Once satisfactorily completed, EAL issue the delegate with a certificate of competence. The competence certificate is valid for two years, after which time the delegate should be re-assessed to confirm competence is being maintained and / or progress to the next level. NSL currently offer competence programmes in the following subjects and levels: Rigging & Lifting Level 1 Aimed at Technicians, Banksman / Slingers and Load Handlers who are required to perform Routine and Simple lifts but may also participate in Complicated and Complex lifts under supervision. Rigging & Lifting Level 2 Aimed at Riggers and Deck Foremen who are required to perform Routine, Simple, Complicated and Complex lifting operations, it is also aimed at those responsible for the planning and safe execution of lifting operations. Advanced Rigging & Lifting Level 3 | Technical Support Aimed at Deck Foremen, Lifting Supervisors involved in decommissioning, subsea and complex lifting operations CompetencePortfolioPre-requisites Personnel new to lifting operations must take a progressive route to achieving competence, i.e. starting with Level 1, reflecting their inexperience in this subject. Level 2 is designed to record and assess existing knowledge and experience. Therefore, beginners or less experienced personnel MUST complete Level 1 first and then gain the necessary experience over two years before they attempt Level 2. Experienced personnel wishing to enrol directly onto Level 2 without going through 1 will be required to provide evidence that they have at least 3 years experience working full time in rigging and lifting operations.

Personnel who require to be deemed competent must possess and be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of practical skill and theoretical knowledge to carry out a given task safely. Personnel can achieve competence by completing training and assessment which documents evidence about their achievements, skills, knowledge and abilities. Step Change in Safety, the UK based partnership with the remit to make the UK the safest Oil and Gas Exploration and Production province in the world, offers the industry the following guidance on how to achieve competence. Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage4 Initial training and assessment Supervised training in the workplace Workplace assessment of competency Ongoing performance advancement

achieving Competence with nSl

NSL can offer clients two options for achieving competence in lifting operations.

option 1

In September 2002 NSL, in association with the UK Government award body EMTA Awards Ltd. (EAL), created competence programmes designed specifically for personnel required to carry out lifting operations (Riggers) and those required to certify and inspect lifting equipment (Lifting Equipment Inspectors). Both our programmes begin with a training course where delegates receive a certificate of training upon successful completion. Delegates then have the option to proceed with the completion of a competence portfolio. The portfolio is used to record their activities and experience in the workplace, and used as evidence of their competence (tasks recorded must be witnessed and when completed should be submitted for assessment and verification by NSL and EAL).

COMPeTeNCe

Personnel who aspire to further their learning and achieve Level 3 must complete Level 2, gain a further two years' experience in lifting operations and complete / record a further six complicated / complex portfolio logs before entry onto this level.

Competence programmes

nSl / eal Competence Certificate

EAL (EMTA Awards Ltd) are a QCA / SQA approved Award Body and are the UK's leading award body for engineering National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and their Scottish equivalent (SVQs).

Competence portfolio

The portfolio contains a list of tasks that have to be completed three times by the delegate to provide evidence of competence in the workplace when operating Lifting Equipment, or otherwise involved in Rigging & Lifting or Crane Operation activities. The portfolio tasks are divided into four sections, A, B, C & D. The delegate must complete two out of the four sections, which are chosen by the delegate, depending on the type of lifting operation they are required to carry out in the workplace. Tasks are recorded using the NSL lifting plan format, which the delegate has already become familiar with during the Rigging and Lifting training course or the Subsea Rigging and Lifting course. Section A: Is compulsory and includes; following a lifting plan (Level 1), planning a lifting operation (Level 2), risk assessment, toolbox talks, selection of equipment, pre-use examination of lifting equipment, slinging the load etc. The delegates can then choose either B, C or D depending on their scope of work. Section B: Is aimed at the delegate who works mostly with lifting machines such as chain hoists, lever hoists, beam trolleys and tasks include erecting / installing / using lifting appliances, lifting in a confined space, and cross hauling a load, etc. Section C: Is aimed at the delegate working mainly with cranes and performs tasks including the inspection and preparation of loads / cargo for lifting, performs lifts using a crane with load unsighted by crane operator, handling tubulars, bundles and pipes, etc. Section D: Is aimed specifically at divers who are required to carry out lifting operations.

Competence in lifting equipment Certification

lifting equipment inspector

Due to the extensive range of lifting equipment, the training and competence in this programme has been separated into six modules to allow prospective inspectors to qualify in one subject at a time and gradually build up their knowledge, experience and therefore competence. Clients and inspectors may choose any course, in any order, if only training is required. However, if the competence portfolio route is required then the first module must be completed before any other module can be attempted. The programme is divided into the following modules: Module 1: General Lifting Equipment Module 2: Winches and Powered Hoists Module 3: Pedestal and Mobile Cranes Module 4: Overhead Travelling Cranes, Runway Beams and Swing Jibs Module 5: Forklift Trucks and Stackers Module 6: Containers and CCUs

SafeTy HarDWare push / pull poles

Push / Pull Poles are designed to help facilitate `handsfree' lifting. They are a modified aluminium telescopic boat hook with a rubber buffer at the other end. The hook end can be used at full extension (approximately 2.1m / 7ft) to retrieve tag lines hanging vertically without a load handler having to go too close to a suspended load. The rubber buffer is used to push against suspended loads to guide them, especially when landing loads in tight or congested spaces. Once again, this allows the operator to remain a safe distance from the load until it has landed. The poles would normally be fully retracted (for rigidity) during this type of use where their length is 1.2m / 4ft. However, they can be used half-extended if required but if too much pressure is applied, they will telescope in. hands free Safety awareness posters are now available. Selected nSl handbooks contain info on using these poles. our rigging & lifting practical training course now includes the use of these poles.
