a Message FroM the tournaMent ChairMan

Dear Mayor's Cup Participant: As Tournament Chairman of the Mayor's Cup All-Scholastic Championships presented by TMZ Wireless, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year's event. New York Junior Tennis League is celebrating its 40th Anniversary throughout 2010, and I am extremely proud to say that all of the student athletes in this year's field have extraordinary character, sportsmanship and are dedicated both on the tennis court and in the classroom. Now in its 23rd year, Mayor's Cup is the largest junior scholastic tennis tournament in the United States. Our tournament is also one of kind as players come from New York City public, parochial, and private schools, from all backgrounds and from all neighborhoods. I look forward to seeing all of you grace the courts of the renowned USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. On behalf of the Tournament Director Elena Bantovska, Mayor's Cup Committee, NYJTL staff, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, as well as the many volunteers who have worked so hard to make this event a success, welcome to the 2010 Mayor's Cup presented by TMZ Wireless. Have a great tournament! Ron Nano Tournament Chairman NYJTL Director of Tennis

history Mayor 's Cup all-sCholastiC ChaMpionships presented by tMZ Wireless

The Mayor's Cup All Scholastic Tennis Championships presented by TMZ Wireless is the premier event for scholastic tennis players in New York City. With the development of the New York Junior Tennis League's Schoolyard Tennis Program in the 1980's, public schools across New York City began producing tennis talent. Through this program, teachers in city schools introduce tennis to their students during the school day, with NYJTL providing free racquets, nets, balls and training. As new young players began to migrate from in-school programs to NYJTL's after-school and summer programs, leaders throughout the metropolitan area recognized the need to create a city-wide tennis tournament. Working closely with the PSAL, CHSAA and local private school coaches and tennis supporters, NYJTL formed a tournament committee which created the format of team and individual events in both singles and doubles competition. With the support of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the dream of a true scholastic tennis tournament became a reality in 1988 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Mayor's Cup is the second largest event to be held at this famous arena, home of the US Open, and is the largest scholastic tennis event in the nation. With 11 different events and more than 600 participants, the Mayor's Cup provides the perfect opportunity for New York City's scholastic tennis players to showcase their on-court talents on a stage fit for Grand Slam champions.

brian Watkins aWard For leadership

2009 Recipients Julia Xu - Hunter College High School Wei Cheng Lin - Benjamin Cardozo High School The Brian Watkins Award for Leadership is one of the most highly coveted special awards in New York City interscholastic tennis. It has been presented annually at the Mayor's Cup since 1991. The award is given to a high school senior boy and girl by a vote of the Tournament Committee, who best exemplifies the courage and leadership qualities of the late Brian Watkins. Nominations are made by coaches of schools participating in the Mayor's Cup on the basis of academic excellence, outstanding scholastic tennis record, a strong record of community service and/or service to his/her school. The award is given in memory of Brian Watkins, a young USTA/NJTL tennis player from Provo, Utah, who lost his life defending his mother in a subway robbery en route to the U.S. Open. Our city was deeply moved by this terrible tragedy. Brian was an outstanding student who loved tennis and who was always willing to help others. The New York City Police Department and the Watkins family felt one of the best ways of honoring Brian was to create this special award for the purpose of recognizing two seniors who represent so many of our City's outstanding student leaders. A stipend for college expenses will be awarded.
