Grade Boundary: Low Excellence 1. Although on first appearance the description of the second application (DNA profiling, Q2 a) appears weak and not sufficient, evidence of understanding of DNA profiling as an application, is stated in the first part of the response to part d) "It works because everyone has a different length of introns and there are different amounts of repeated sequences .....". Other aspects in the test are sufficiently described or explained. The work provides discussion, mainly in relation to the human need or demand for both applications (part c of both questions), placing it at E. Although to some extent there are links between the techniques and the context of the question in the discussion, some of the responses do not clearly link to the context provided by the question. Also the description of PCR is brief and lacks some details. For these reasons the report is at the lower end of E.

Grade Boundary: High Merit 2. The report explains two applications, two techniques for each application (4 techniques in all) and the human need or demand for each application. Some discussion is developed in the report for example the comparison of different ways a DNA profile can be made and why PCR is used today (pg 1). However the report is predominantly high quality explanation placing it at the upper end of M.

Grade Boundary: Low Merit 3. The test sufficiently describes two applications, two techniques for each application (4 techniques in all) and human need or demand for both applications. There is some weak explanation of the use of PCR and gel electrophoresis in, and the human need or demand for, DNA profiling and some aspects of the human need or demand for transgenesis are explained. Because of the evidence of explanation the work is at M. However, the explanation is shallow lacking some detail, placing the work overall at the lower end of M.

Grade Boundary: High Achieved 4. The report provides evidence of a detailed Level 3 description of how the process of gene cloning and DNA profiling are carried out with some aspects weakly explained e.g. human need or demand for gene cloning. Overall, however, the report is mainly detailed description with the weak explanation placing it at the upper end of A

Grade Boundary: Low Achieved 5. The report sufficiently describes the application of transgenesis. However the description of the second application, DNA profiling, is weak, particularly in the sections relating to PCR and the human need or demand. Overall the work is sufficient for A but because of the weaker description in some areas the report is at the lower end of A.

Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved 6. This report provides sufficient evidence of description of one application (genome analysis), while the description of the other application (DNA profiling) is weak because it does not sufficiently describe the purpose of DNA profiling or what it is used for. It also provides description of two techniques for each application (4 techniques in all). However the human need or demand aspect is weak for both applications because it does not sufficiently describe the human need or demand in relation to a specific context and are below the level of description required at Level 3. Therefore, with the weakness in the description of one application and weakness in the human need or demand for both applications, the report is overall close to Achieved.
