General Guidance for Assessors The purpose of external moderation is to provide reassurance that teacher judgments are at the national standard and are made on the basis of assessment materials that are fair and valid. All assessment materials are expected to: · give the student the opportunity to meet the requirements of the standard · include an assessment schedule that gives evidence of appropriate student responses and clear judgments at all levels. The resources on this webpage include: · annotated exemplars of student evidence · clarification documents - these include Notes for Teachers for the level 3 Statistics and Modelling standards as well as clarification documents for 90288, 90637 and commonly used unit standards · newsletters · National Moderators' Reports · a link to TKI resources Level 3 Achievement Standards For the Statistics and Modelling achievement standards, Excellence requires in-depth discussion on aspects which need to go beyond generalised comments. 90637 For Excellence the complexity of the problem needs to be in terms of trigonometric relationships which are at level 8 of the national curriculum rather than, for example, algebraic manipulation. 90641 As students need to determine how they process the data themselves it is not appropriate to give them the column headings or cell formulae for moving averages, centred moving averages, seasonal effects or seasonally adjusted data. For Achieved the description of the trend must identify, in context, both of the variables which are being used. 90645 For Achieved the description of the relationship needs to discuss in context both the strength, with reference to scatter about the regression line, and the direction of the relationship. The clarification notes discuss in detail the requirements for Merit. 90647 For Merit, there needs to be evidence of model selection. The clarification notes discuss different ways this can be done. More than a comparison of R2 values is expected.

New Zealand Qualifications Framework Levels 1 ­ 3 Mathematics 2010 ­ page 3 Level 2 Achievement Standards 90288 The subject resources page contains documentation which suggests an approach to assessing this standard that has the potential to make higher grades more accessible and also reduce chances of statistical misunderstanding. 90289 For Achieved the description of the simulation needs to clearly identify what a trial consists of. If limitations are discussed at Excellence level then it would be usual to require more than one such comment. Any response needs to include discussion relating to how the identified limitation would impact on the simulation process completed by the student. 90291 For Achieved students must take all of the measurements which are required to solve the posed problem. Measurements need to be of real objects. A scale diagram cannot be used.
