Tip of the Month

In the fall, bass tend to school together. When you catch one, there may be a few more in the area so caste back to that spot quickly.

Spartan anglers had a busy October. The team brought the Access to Fishing program to Oak Lawn! Community members can now go to the Oak Lawn Public Library and check out a fishing rod just as they would a book. Read more about this program on page 3. We also celebrated our largest angler turnout on a team outing. Thirty three Spartan anglers along with five parents fished at Plainfield Fishing Resort in early September. Ben Masek's article about our experience can be found on page two. Unique Bassmaster's has partnered up with the Spartan Fishing Team to organize the first ever

The Spartan Fishing Team at Plainfield Fishing Resort

Oak Lawn Community High School Bass Tournament at the Des Plaines Conservation Area. The article can be found on page three. This issue also features our first product review. Francisco Patino review's the Pflueger President's spinning combo. On page five, Carlos Patino examines a phenomenon that happens on lakes in the fall known as lake turnover. Find out about how nature works and the chemistry of water by reading this fascinating article.

About the Spartan Fishing Newsletter...

The Spartan Fishing Newsletter serves as a fundraising publication for the team. Thanks to the generous businesses that advertise with us, the team is able to raise funds and provide a $250 scholarship to its participants. years team. The best way to support this team is by supporting its business partners. Please print the ad's and coupons in the newsletter and use them often! The articles in the newsletter are written by students about their experiences in the outdoors. Students have researched fish facts, videos of the months, and fishing

quotes, which can all be found on page five of this publication. The newsletter is released on the first Friday of each month via the Oak Leaflet (our high school's weekly e-correspondence with parents), the teams website, or by searching "Spartan Fishing Team" on the internet. Please join us every month to see what we are up to!

SPARTAN FISHING TE AM

Plainfield Fishing Resort

On September 8, 2010, the OLCHS Fishing Team took a trip to Plainfield Fishing Resort. This trip was special because it was the largest group of students to ever go fishing together. We had 33 students on this trip and five parents! It was a huge group! We went to this lake last year and almost every kid caught something, so this year we were looking forward to it. Having fished there before, we also had an idea in our minds of where each of us wanted to fish. This was the first trip for the freshmen on our team. They were all eager to show Coach Kuchyt what they knew about fishing. As soon as the bus pulled up to the resort, we paid the entrance fee and got our tickets. At first, most of us started casting crankbaits. Nothing was really biting so I decided to tie on a Mike Iaconelli Gripper Jig. My friend

ing the catfish. In October, he puts trout in the lake.

Omar and I had a little competition with our teammates Luis and Carlos to see who would catch the first fish. About 20 minutes into the trip, I latched onto a two pound largemouth! Carlos and his brother Francisco also caught a bass off a boat that their father had rented. Those were the only bass caught that day. The bass were not really biting that day, but the bluegill surly were. Francisco had a mighty bite tied on and was catching bluegill like crazy. Our teammates Matt and Rob came back from an area of the lake known as Catfish Corner. They caught three catfish with bait that Matt had made at home. We also had the opportunity to see the owner of the resort stock catfish into the lake. Each week he puts catfish into the lake for the fishermen to catch. There is a picture below of him releas-

We grilled up some hot dogs and ate some chips for lunch while we fished. Overall, we did not catch as many fish as we did last year, but it was still a great body of water to be on and it offered a good opportunity for Coach Kuchyt to evaluate the new members of our team and make decisions about our upcoming bass tournament on the Des Plaines River.

Fishing Rod Rentals Now Available at Oak Lawn Public Library

The Spartan Fishing Team has brought the "Access to Fishing" program to the Oak Lawn Public Library! Access to Fishing is a rod and reel loaner program where community members with an Oak Lawn Public Library Card can visit the library and "check out" a fishing rod just as they would a book. This offers a unique opportunity for children and adults who are interested in going fishing to do so without having to purchase equipment to try the sport. When a child or community member checks out a rod and reel, a tackle packet (containing hooks, sinkers, a bobber, etc.) and instructional fishing literature are given to the patron at no cost! The program was established in Illinois by the Department of Natural Resources in 1997 and has since been supported through federal and state grants. Currently, there are over 160 "Access to Fishing" fishing pole loaner sites in Illinois. The Spartan Fishing Team brought the program to Oak Lawn and the team will maintain the rods and reels to ensure that they are in great shape for people to enjoy. The rods are Zebco Rhino and the reels are Zebco 20/20 spincast reels. Through this program, the team hopes to get more kids in Oak Lawn involved in fishing and the outdoors. There are many fishing Mary Williams (Oak Lawn Public Library), Luis Garcia, and Ben opportunities located with a Masek of the Spartan Fishing Team few miles of Oak Lawn, including the Stoney Creek Pond (103rd & Central) and the many Cook County Forest Preserve Lakes. Fall is a great time to take a kid fishing, so rent a rod and enjoy the fall colors!

First Ever Spartan Bass Tournament

Unique Bassmasters along with the Oak Lawn High School Spartan Fishing Team and its sponsors have joined together to present the Oak Lawn Community High School Bass Tournament on the Kankakee/Des Plaines River scheduled for October 2, 2010. The tournament is a one day fish off for high school students open to any IHSA school with a bass fishing team. Tournament results will be posted on the teams website.

SPARTAN FISHING TE AM

Product Review: Pflueger President Spinning Combo

The Pflueger President Combo is a great deal! The rod measures 7 feet and is one piece. Since it is a one piece fishing rod, it is more sensitive than a two piece one would be. Also, with a long rod like this one, you can make a much farther cast. The rod is an IM8 and is made out of a very light graphite material.

By Francisco Patino

The guides are titanium. The sensitivity on this rod is great. I like being able to feel the lure hit weeds or the bottom with my lure. The rod also has enough back bone to set the hook on a large bass. This rod is paired with a Presidents Spinning reel. The reel has a ten bearing drive. It is smooth to cast and the drag runs smooth. All in all, the Pflueger Presidents rod and reel is a great combination. It retails for about $80 and is well worth the money! There are eight members on our team who raised money to

purchase these rods last year and we all love them. Pflueger makes a great product and I would highly recommend this one.

Lake Turnover by Carlos Patino

Fall fishing is a great time to catch some big fish. It's also a time when fishing can be challenging because a lake "turns over." Turnover means that when the water in the lake goes through a rotation which is often caused by a cold front and other factors. The change can happen in one day and is based on the chemistry of the water molecule. Over the summer months, different depths of water develop different levels of oxygen (which was all based on the temperature of the water). The top layer of water (the warmest) has the most oxygen. Depths from 9-17 feet will have less oxygen and the deepest part of the lake (also known as the "dead zone") has the least amount of oxygen. That does not mean the fish cannot be in those depths, that just means they would not be there for long. As the weather gets colder throughout the fall, the top layer of water cools. It eventually reaches a point where it is the same temperature as deep water. At this point, the water that was in different temperature layers over the summer, now mixes together. The deep water is rejuvenated with oxygen. This allows the fish to say in deep water over the winter. There are lots of ways to identify turn over in a lake. You may smell sulfur (smells like rotten eggs) or the lake can have a distinct coffee color. You may see all the leaves and rotting things at the bottom of the lake might start to come up to the surface or they might be visible by looking down into the deeper water. Although many people say that when a lake is going through turnover its better to stay home and work on fixing and organizing your gear, that's not really true. It is still possible to catch some fish but you need to realize that the strike zone will be really small. So remember to keep turn over in mind the next time you got out fishing. Good luck!
