This last week of weather was certainly attention getting! I hope that all of our members survived without damage and that none of us had our cars stored near any rivers that got unruly! I took a drive out toward Duvall this week and was shocked to see how deep the water was, and how many old vehicles were up to their roofs in flood waters. There were several yards with cars on jack stands with water up to the windows, looking like they were in mid-project when the flood arrived with a vengeance. For this month's meeting we'll be back at Jay's Café next Tuesday, November 14th. We had a great meeting last month at the Filling Station restaurant in Federal Way. Many of our south end members took advantage of the location and were able to show off their cars as well. The turn-out sounded really good, although I wasn't able to attend. Roger Howard made it in his 59 Fury, and everyone was very impressed. We missed him at Poulsbo this summer, so it was nice to see him at the meeting. Our club elections are at hand, and basically the same slate of candidates are up again with the exception of the VicePresident. Jim VanderHeyden has stepped down after two years of great service to the Club. One of our new members, Jack Perry, has stepped up and offered to fill that position. Jack is the owner of a very cool 1941 Dodge Command Car, and I feel he will bring a rich base of knowledge and life experience to our Club. Many thanks to Jim for all his hard work on our regional meet, and for all the long hours he spent on T-shirt transfers and all our photo CDs which he put together after the meet in Poulsbo. Now he'll have a bit more time to finish all those Desoto projects he is working on! I was watching some "on demand" cable programming last week, and found Lance Lambert's show on the Graham Mopar meet. It was good to see some TV coverage devoted to Chrysler products. Lance interviewed our WPC members George and Anna Haley, showing their nice 49 Plymouth convertible. The show was a full half hour and represented the whole spectrum of vehicles at this popular annual event. I hope we have a good turn-out for this year's Holiday Dinner and December meeting on Sunday night, December 3rd. It will be at Mia Roma's in Kenmore, which is right next to Jay's Café. We have enclosed a flier with all the particulars on page 6 of this newsletter. This will serve as our December meeting as well, and will be the last collection opportunity for our yearly holiday toy and food drives. If anyone cannot make the dinner, their toy or food donations can also be dropped off at Fenders and Fins. Our Club has a wonderful history of service over the last few years with our annual donations, thanks to the generosity of all of you. I want to take this opportunity to thank my wife Patty for all her work on behalf of our club organizing events and membership. She is stepping down from the events work this year and I know we will have a tough time filling her shoes. It has been great fun to take part in the tours, meets, and dinners she has planned so well and helped to make so successful, and I thank her. If any of you in the Club have an idea and want to be involved in planning an event or tour, please don't be afraid to step up and get involved. You will really enjoy it, and so will the Club! Until next time, Jon

Cover Car:1954 Chrysler Ghia GS-1 Special

In the late 40s and early 50s, Chrysler suffered from lackluster styling. In hopes of changing this stodgy image, Chrysler began a 15 year relationship with Ghia of Turin, building a series of cars inspired by the designs of Chief Stylist Virgil Exner. The mechanical components were all Chrysler, but the exquisite bodies were the creation of Ghia, with inspiration from Exner. These "Ghia Specials" were built from 1951 to 1954, taking advantage of Turin production costing only 1/5th of the U.S. price! These "idea" cars were meant to inspire Chrysler's design team while giving the general public a glimpse of things to come. Showcased at auto shows, they always drew big crowds, as they were the perfect blend of American Styling and power with coachwork by one of the greatest Italian coachbuilders. Other notable examples of the Chrysler/Ghia partnership were the Chrysler D'Elegance & Falcoln, DeSoto's Adventurer II, The Dodge Firebomb & FireArrow, and the Crown Imperial Ghia Limousines. The 1954 Ghia Special used the 125.5 inch New Yorker chassis with standard New Yorker bumpers front & rear, and was powered by the 180 horsepower Firepower 331 Hemi, coupled to a Powerflite transmission. Not a small car by any means, it weighed in at a hefty 4005 pounds! According to the Chrysler Museum, an undetermined additional number were also built by Ghia for sale in Europe by Societe France Motors, the Chrysler distributor for France. Reportedly, only 5 examples still survive today. This 1954 GS-1 was shown at the 2006 Kirkland Concours d'Elegance this fall. It was also displayed at the Palo Alto and Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance events earlier this summer. The proud owner is Mr. John White of Sacramento, CA. *All photos courtesy of former WPC member Bob Zenk.

Club Elections:

It's election time again, folks. The success of this or any club depends on the willingness of its members to put in a little time to help share the work load, in order to avoid the unfairness and ultimate "burnout" of being in office for life!

We still need someone to fill the open position of Events Coordinator.

This position is an organizing function for our Club events (so that we have one single person to oversee and monitor the various event details, rather than several individuals). This does NOT mean that the Events Coordinator is responsible for coming up with event ideas to present, but rather only for coordinating any planned events to ensure that they run smoothly and efficiently. If you are an organized person and don't mind making phone calls, this job is for you! We have lots we would like to do (i.e: The Arlington Air Show in July, a tractor show in Lynden, another LeMay's Tour & Picnic in April, and more, but Patty needs a break (for at least a year). For job details or questions, Patty will be happy to chat with you at 425-788-0175. Don't be shy! Try it, you'll like it! Your ballot is printed below. You can cut it out of this newsletter and mail it in, or if you're online, you can print it out and mail it in, or e-mail your vote to: [email protected], but PLEASE VOTE! The deadline is Nov. 30th.

OFFICIAL ELECTION BALLOT Most of our board members have agreed to stay on for another two years. As you see, we have one new volunteer for Vice President. If there is anyone else who would like to serve on the Board, just enter your name in the "other" space for whatever position you'd like to run for. PRESIDENT: Jon Carson ____ VICE PRES: Jack Perry ____ Secretary: Angela Amaya ____ Treasurer: Hank Palmer ____ Editor: Larry Zappone ____ Membership: Patty Carson ____ Other ___________________ Other ___________________ Other ___________________ Other ___________________ Other ___________________ Other ___________________

Cut out and mail your completed ballot to: WPC, PO Box 513, Woodinville, WA 98072 , or email it to [email protected] Ballots are due Nov. 30th.
