Ruched Roses

1. Using lightweight cardboard, trace and cut out one

6" circle for the large rose in the center medallion and one 5" circle for the small rose in each Wreathed Heart. Around the outer edge of the cardboard template, mark dots or small lines. The marks should be equally spaced around the edge of the circle, about 1" apart. Next, mark an inner circle of dots, 1/2" from the outer edge, placing the dots between the ones along the outer edge as shown on the circle pattern.

5. Cut out one large fabric circle adding a / " seam

allowance all around the outer edge of the circle. Cut out 16 small fabric circles, again adding a 3/4" seam allowance all around the outer edge of each circle.

6. Fold the seam allowance along the marked edge of

the outer circle, wrong sides together, and press. (Optional: Hand baste the seam allowance in place a scant 1/8" from the raw edge.)

2. On each cardboard template, use a large pin or 3. Place a circle template on the right side of the

fabric and lightly mark the outside dots with your favorite marking tool. This will be your fold line and the dots will be your stitching guide.

tool inside each punched out inner-circle hole to mark the dots for an additional stitching guide.

4. Without moving your template, put your marking

stronger of color-matching thread and knot the end. With the knot in the seam allowance, come up on the right side of the fabric circle at an inner-circle dot. Stitch to a dot on the outer edge and carry your thread over the fold (this loop scallops the edge). Bring your thread back up on the right side, near the folded edge, and stitch to the next inner-circle dot, you're stitches will make a triangular pattern.

Continue stitching in this manner until you have 4 or 5 triangles. Gently gather your thread to create petals.

If you have a particular size flower in mind, you should measure the diameter as you gather until you reach the size you desire (for example, 4" across for a large rose and 3" across for a small rose).

8. This process will make the center of the fabric

circle puff up with all the extra fabric. Once you like the size of your flower, knot the thread, but do not cut it off. You will need the needle and thread to complete the flower. Pinch the puff of fabric at the center top, and then gently twist the fabric in one direction until it flattens against the petals. The fabric will have a twisted wrinkle effect. If you don't like the way the wrinkles appear, simply untwist and try again. Bring the needle and thread up through these layers and stab stitch the wrinkles to keep them in place.

Continue stitching in the same manner as before until you reach the starting point. Come up through the starting point as your final stitch. Do not knot off at this point. Pull the thread to gather the edge into small petals. The gather can be as tight as you wish, or looser if you prefer a softer edge.

9. Stitch the flower in place using an appliqué stitch.

Sew the large rose in the middle of the center square. Sew a small rose on each Wreathed Heart as shown in the photo.
