Homecoming 2008



ILLOW ACADEMY CLASS OF 1978 alumni joined athletes from several state championship teams at homecoming for a special recognition ceremony at halftime of the football game. An after-the-game party for the Class of 1978 was hosted by John Bush and Carolyn King Boswell at Carolyn's sister's home, Elizabeth King Barth (`81). Class members also met on Saturday evening for dinner at the Crystal Grill. Former athletes of the 1978 Boy's State Championship Track Team; the 1983 Boy's State Basketball Championship Team; and the 1998 State AAAA Tennis Team Champions, Lady Mustang Basketball Champions, and the Fastpitch State Champions converged on the Pillow Academy campus for a pregame catfish supper followed by a special recognition ceremony on the field at halftime.

If you would like to submit a nomination for the 2008-09 Sports Hall of Fame, complete the form in this newsletter and submit it to the PA Alumni Office no later than Friday, December 5, 2008. The Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2009, at 6:00 pm.

The Class of 1999 will be celebrating its 10th Class Reunion this summer on May 15th, 16th, & 17th. Contact Lee Sturdivant Carby for more information at [email protected] The Class of 1979 will celebrate its 30th Class Reunion this summer on June 19th & 20th. Alumni who have not contacted Elizabeth Meadors Hamm ([email protected]) or Eddie Crenshaw ([email protected]) need to do that ASAP. The Class of 1992 soon will be planning its 20th reunion. Class President Gip Clark wants classmates to contact him as he develops a Facebook page for class members ([email protected]).

Nominations should be submitted no later than Friday, December5,2008. Honorees will be recognized onFriday,February6,2009, at 6:00 pm in the Tol Thomas Library at Pillow. Completed nomination forms should be mailed to PA Alumni Office, 69601 Hwy. 82 W., Greenwood, MS 38930. Feel free to include any additional information (newspaper clippings, etc.) Nominees must meet the following three criteria: 1. The athlete must have excelled in sports as either a student or coach at Pillow. 2. Student athletes must have graduated from PA no later than1980. 3. Alumni Updates

Mrs. Marietta Branch, Advanced Placement Biology teacher at Pillow Academy, has been recognized by the Siemens Foundation, in partnership with the College Board, for teaching excellence in AP math and science through the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The annual Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement recognizes teachers in every state for their success in the classroom and for their dedication to students. Using data from the College Board's AP test scores, Pillow Academy has one of the highest student success rates in AP Biology. Because of the high test scores of her students on the AP Biology exam, Mrs. Branch has been invited to apply for the Siemens National AP Teacher of the Year. Only a select number of teachers of all AP subjects from public and private schools have been chosen to apply for this prestigious award. This is Mrs. Branch's 27th year to teach, and her 18th year to teach at Pillow Academy. She has taught Advanced Placement Biology at Pillow or 12 years. Les Shipley ('72) of Greenwood passed away on October 16, 2008. A fund has been established at Trustmark Bank in Greenwood to accept donations to continue Les' work with animals in need. Donations should be made to the All Creatures Great and Small fund in honor of Les Shipley. Jan Crump Robinson ('74) of Brandon, a registered nurse at University of Mississippi Health Care, was recognized by peers for exceptional service to the institution during the Annual Nursing Excellence Awards ceremony on May 7, 2008. Jan received the Clinical Practice Nurse of the Year Award. Jan has been in her current role in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation for twenty-four years. According to Tina Higgins, Office of Nursing Excellence Manager at UMHC, "During that time, she has continued to elevate her knowledge and clinical expertise to new heights each year. Jan's level of caring is exemplified in the large number of patient compliments she receives on a routine basis." Elizabeth Meadors Hamm (`79) can be contacted for information about the 30th reunion for the PA class of 1979 at [email protected] Class members planning to attend should email Elizabeth or Eddie Crenshaw so that they can get a headcount for proper planning. Itineraries will be mailed out before Christmas. Dr. Jenay Neely ('86) and husband Ed Blackstone of Greenwood announce the birth of their daughter, Mollene (Molley) Hartwell Blackstone, on August 1st. Molley was born on Jenay's 40th birthday and on Jenay and Ed's 16th wedding anniversary.

Dana Freeland Ainsworth ('87) and husband Dean of Greenwood announce the birth of their daughter, Emma Kathleen Ainsworth, on July 28th. Welcoming Emma home are siblings Barry, Allison, Jordan, Sarah Beth, and Claire. Lauren Doty Scott ('92) and husband Allen of Leland announce the birth of their son, Doty McLauren Scott, on August 23rd. Welcoming her baby brother is Ann Garner Scott (4). Gip Clark (`92) of Hollywood, CA, and president of the Pillow Academy Class of 1992 is getting classmates in touch with each other to prepare for their 20th reunion in 2012. Contact Gip at [email protected] Moss Melton ('93) and wife Shannon of Greenwood announce the birth of their daughter, Ainsley Marie Melton, on July 9th. Meg Ellis Hayden ('93) and husband Ben announce the birth of their son, William Phillip Hayden, on April 8th. Welcoming him is big sister Mary Margaret (2 1/2). William Powell Litton III (`96) and wife Wendi of Clarksdale announce the birth of their son, William Powell Litton IV, on September 15th. Kristi Neely Jordan ('96) and husband D'Wayne of Itta Bena announce the birth of their daughter, Neely Grace Jordan, on February 21, 2008. Jim Landers ('97) and wife Erin of Nashville, TN, announce the birth of their son, Jackson Douglas Landers, on September 20th. Hayden Young Angay ('97) and husband Tugay of Suwanee, GA, announce the birth of their daughter, Lara Avery Angay, on May 16th. Chris McCurdy ('97) and wife Miki announce the birth of their daughter, Maura Katherine McCurdy, on July 2nd. Welcoming her baby sister is Stella (2). Amy Henson McInteer ('97) and husband Braden of Ridgeland announce the birth of their daughter, Rileigh Henson McInteer, on October 6th. Lee Sturdivant Carby (`99) of Birmingham, AL, can be contacted for information about the reunion for the PA class of 1999 at [email protected] Amy Hardin Murphey ('00) and Jason Michael Shirkey were married on October 18th. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi Medical Center with a doctorate in physical therapy in May and is now employed as a physical therapist at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi in Oxford.

Wood Dale (`01) was the featured speaker at Pillow's Veterans' Day program on November 11th. Wood is a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army and is also a student at the University of Mississippi. Sara Jane Nelson ('02) and Stephen Heath Ingram were married on September 6. They live in Durham, NC, where she is employed as an account executive with Capital Broadcasting Company, Fox 50 Television, and he is a perfusionist with Duke University Hospital. Erin Sutphen ('02) received her Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy in May 2008. She also married Captain Robert Mathews Thompson, a U. S. Air Force attorney, in May. Their wedding ceremony was held at Comlongon Castle in Dumfries, Scotland. They now reside in Tampa, FL, where she is employed as a pharmacist and he as an assistant staff judge with the USAF. Brandi Denise Everett (`03) and Lance Eugene Gregory were married on September 13th. They reside in Greenwood. Tucker Redditt (`03) was married to Henry Pratt Lipe of LaPlace, LA, on October 11th at The House of Broel's Victorian Mansion in New Orleans. Allan Bledsoe (`05) was married to Jane Gray Wiggers of Jackson on August 2nd. They currently reside in Starkville. Anna Christine Jennings ('05) has been tapped for membership in Mortar Board, a national honor society for college seniors. Anna, a senior at Mississippi State University, is majoring in biological sciences with a pre-med concentration. Anna is also involved in Terpsichore Dance Company, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and the American Medical Student Association. She is a member of numerous honorary societies including Gamma Beta Phi, Sigma Alpha Lambda, Beta Beta Beta and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Cole Mortimer ('07) was selected to perform the lead female role in the play, "Butterflies are Free," a production of the Theatre Department at Texas Christian University. She is also a Dean's Scholar and serves as an ambassador for TCU. Katie Farmer ('08), Melissa Nason ('08), and Christine Rustom ('08) were recently initiated into Kappa Delta Sorority at Delta State University. Katie is involved in the Student Government Association, College Republicans, and Diamond Girls. Melissa is also involved in the Student Government Association as well as the Student Alumni Association and the Baptist Student Union. Christine is involved with both the Student Alumni Association and the Student Government Association.

XCITING NEW THINGS are happening that involve YOU. Reunions, Homecoming activities, Sports tournaments, Award ceremonies, Guest speakers... The list goes on and on. Do YOU know about all of these?

Hiring Bethe Williams to oversee Alumni Relations is a step in the right direction for you. A Council and Class Captains have committed to serve you. Now it is your time to help us. Simply, stay in touch with what is going on in your life. Spread the word with announcements for events. Respond to invitations for alumnirelated events. We are excited about the momentum we have today. The response from so many of you encourages us to continue the mission of building channels of communication. Take the torch and run with it.
